Gourmet Pool Enmore Demerara Rum 1988
Strictly a slow neat pour, and members treat it that way. The nose runs dark — molasses, leather, cold coffee, dried figs and a whiff of pencil shavings that marks these old Demeraras. The palate turns to black tea, tannins and dark chocolate, with dried fruit and a bitter edge some love and some find just past its peak. At 49.6% the wood stays surprisingly in check for 37 years.

How does Gourmet Pool Enmore Demerara Rum 1988 taste?
From community reviews · summarized with AI
Dark, tannic old Enmore for slow sipping A near-unanimous high scorer — old-Enmore depth and a "dangerous drinkability." The recurring wish is a few more degrees of proof; one or two find it a touch too bitter.

So, we finally have this old highly praised Enmore from Gourmet Pool in the glass.. I can understand the many positive reviews: it's dark, noble and strong, and you can have a good time with it in the evening. However, not an easy sipper and the price... well, I definitely find it a bit high.

A rum tasted at WLP in 2026. A dark nose, very woody, old varnished wood, leather and oak barrel. With dried fruits and prunes. The palate is marked by powerful wood but it doesn’t dominate everything. The other aromas are there, leather and dried fruits and even almost fresh fruits and I even have the impression that they develop during the tasting. The finish is long, the wood and its tannins are felt more, a very beautiful rum here, complex and refined.

Respect, I can only agree with the reviews before me. A top-notch bottling from Gourmet Pool. It has a nice complexity for me. I especially liked these coffee/mokka notes with the wood notes.

Today the Gourmet Pool has to prove itself against one of the big 88 Enmores, the Whisky Jury rated with 90 points. The GP already has a magnificent nose. A bit more of everything than the Whisky Jury (dried fruits, dried fig, leather, caramel, barrel). With the relatively low ABV of both, it could also be that the 0.7 percentage points higher ABV makes a difference. On the palate, I almost like the WJ a bit better. It feels a bit edgier (in a positive sense). Conclusion: right at the top among the 88 Enmores, but it doesn't have the shelf to itself now.

An old Enmore that I really like, but more proof certainly wouldn't have hurt. Many dark aromas like leather, black tea, chocolate and earth. Unfortunately the fruit aromas continuously decrease. The wood is surprisingly in the background which is very positive. Value for money unfortunately doesn't fit.

Indeed a very nice bottling of the 1988 vintage. Lots of intensity and depth.

On the nose initially rather dark aromas like molasses and damp wood. Then coffee and chocolate join in. Herbal notes are already hinted at here. On the next sniff, dried fruits, dried cranberries, and burnt sugar. After some time, earthy notes become noticeable, like damp earth after a short summer shower. Already an absolute aroma spectacle on the nose. On the palate, initially a lot of wood and tannins. Along with the dark aromas come cold coffee and this time rather dark chocolate. Later, dried fruits. Here, however, a bit too bitter for me. Maybe one or two years too long in the cask. The finish is nicely long and dominated by burnt sugar and earthy notes with herbs. It is very woody, without being too woody. Gourmetpool has chosen a great cask here, just a bit pricey. One can really look forward to what else comes from the guys in Lindlar.

Wow, I'm surprised. I prefer the dark 1988s. Must be an MEC. Not so many typical Versailles pencil notes. More molasses, licorice, black tea, wood and dark red fruits. Despite the age, not woody. Amazing!
Review by Jakob
Classic old Enmore, the year 1988 produced some excellently aged rums with the typically heavy profile among the heavier styles (MEC?). These styles fully convince me when the full aroma from the harsh notes of leather, licorice, and dark chocolate, the dark spices of allspice and anise, as well as the lightening sweet aromas of molasses, caramel, and dried fruits have married with the wood notes, without the latter taking over. The long aging has already left a strong impact in the form of dry, subtly roasted notes from the cask, the rest of the profile is still fun, but the question "What if the rum had come out of the cask earlier?" stays with me all the way to the finish. Also, the rum is wonderfully accessible after some oxidation in the glass, but alongside the elegance, it could offer a bit more power – at least for my Guyana taste. A very good rum that reminds me of the really great Guyanas.

Once again something special. Exactly my direction. On the nose first some burnt oak wood, then coffee and dark chocolate. On the palate very pleasantly soft with a light herbal note. A bit bitter for me but just right. Then some dried fruits. Long finish and then comes the pencil. At 49.6% a bit too little, could have handled 55% well. Overall a true pleasure.

#7464 25.09.2026 - 28.09.2026 Attending the Whisky Live in Paris 2026 with a few good friends. We had a great time and it was nice to introduce them to this event which was a first for them. Quick notes while tasting. Balanced, woody, roasted, medicinal, spice, fruits, coffee, nuts, molasses, pencil shavings, light caramel, light leather, faint mint.

Nose Violets, coffee, and dried rose petals. Ylang-ylang blossoms. It feels like sniffing a coffee in a Victorian-era orangery. Why Victorian? Picture an old, fragrant Chesterfield armchair as well. Add the finest Dominican tobacco and an old leather-bound book—Jane Eyre, perhaps. What we have here is elegance, ladies and gents—an attribute I don’t usually associate with Enmores. After minutes of breathing, very dense dried mango and pineapple coil their way out of the glass. We deem this most excellent. Palate Jane Eyre, indeed! The first sip impresses with an extremely delicate sweetness, elegance, and balance—almost a Victorian purity! The cask is by no means in charge here; the distillate is. Given the label’s mention of a Coffey Still, I first had serious doubts, as the EAM mark usually refers to the wooden Versailles pot still. After consulting with the bottler, he conducted further research with the broker and received the following clear confirmation: it is indeed a distillate from the Wooden Enmore Coffey Still. This makes it something of a minor sensation! Fact is: this rum drinks like juice! Beautiful pencil shavings, sweet milky coffee, with carob and roasted pecans in between. I’m very surprised. You immediately want to take a second sip. It doesn’t have the heaviness and deepness of a 1994 REV or the bangers from the 1970s, but instead an incredible lightness. Almost floating, paired with a thick, viscous mouthfeel. Works wonderfully if you ask me. Finish Long and and extremely juicy, but also vegetal. Very much green coffee and long-steeped green tea, giving it that typical jungle-y vibe that I love about these old Demeraras. Rating The juice perfectly matches the elegant bottle and presents itself with a very dangerous drinkability and freshness. I’ve been a fan for quite some time of drinking strengths in the 48–52% range—provided the dilution happened naturally, i.e., through evaporation rather than added water. This Enmore lands right on the perfect sweet spot. Thanks, Seb, for the sample and the glass

A very tasty Demerara rum from the long-closed Enmore distillery. Fruity, spicy, woody, dark and noble with a slight sweetness. The rum needs time and wants to be explored. Great cask selection.
