Here's the twist: this reads like Jamaica, but it's South African cane-juice pot still. Esters, polish and lacquer hit first, then a burst of overripe pineapple, banana and mandarin — a thick, oily body underneath. At 59.5% the alcohol lands well integrated, and one reviewer nailed it as "rotting fruit sweetness and loads of different chemicals." A butterier note in the finish splits a few tasters, but most call this Mhoba near its best.

#6106 19.12.2025 Tasting at Whisky Watcher in Odense. Nose Mediuim intense, fruity, ester, overripe, pineapple, banana, light caramel, light earthy. Palate Oily, fresh, medium intense, naturally sweet, fruity, ester, light floral, light cinnamon, light orange, banana. Finish Long and warm, peppery, fresh, oily, light cinnamon, ester, light tobacco, citrus. Should not be left in the glass for too long!

Quite ester-heavy. The strange buttery note in the finish bothers me a bit. Luckily it almost disappears with the addition of some water.

Blindverkostung: Nase: viel Ester, Ananas und Mango, wenig Holz, Alkohol deutlich spürbar Ich würde soweit auf Mhoba tippen Gaumen: sehr ähnlich zur Nase, scharfkantig, intensiv, sehr alkoholisch und metallisch, wenig Holz, Offenbar ein junger Highester Rum, ich bleibe bei Mhoba, Alkohol ca. ~65% Nachklang: lang, sehr intensiv und angenehm süß-fruchtig, kaum Fasseinfluss, Fruchtgummi Fazit: sehr guter, sehr intensiver, vermutlich junger Highester Rum, dass metallische und der nicht optimal eingebundene Alkohol stören mich etwas

👃 Esters, acidité des agrumes, jus d'orange frais avec la pulpe, jolie note de beurre citronné et vanillé, sucre au début de la caramélisation, fruits tropicaux surmûris (ananas et banane). Légère salinité, réglisse salée, fumée de citron séché, vernis, solvants et notes pétrolifères. 😋 Vive, intense, estérisée. Texture huileuse, presque beurrée. On retrouve le même fruité qu'au nez, d'un côté tropical, de l'autre des agrumes. Les esters apportent des produits d'entretien du bois, du vernis et des solvants. Aspect sucré sur du caramel de sucre roux. Léger sucre salé, note légère d'olive noire, réglisse chaude. ⛳ Chaude, astringente, acido-amère. Esters + épices, sensation beurrée, fruits tropicaux et agrumes en salade, texture grasse et huileuse, note herbacée, fraîcheur de menthe poivrée, tabac du cigare. 🏅 Vraiment très intéressant ces profils high ester d'Afrique du Sud, entre funk Jamaïcain et agricole intense. Pas le profil le plus complexe mais il va droit au but.

Mhoba at its best... just that nose... first-class esters, tropical fruit and delicate vanilla... absolutely Hampden-like! On the palate then besides initial esters, lots of tannins, allspice and strongly burnt sugar... quite intense overall. The finish remains on the tannin-heavy side. Certainly not everyone's taste, I find it great.

#1705 18-12-2025 - Rate 9.0 I’m a huge fan of the Habitation Mhoba 2017. This is also a 4 year rum but distilled 4 years later the the Habitation edition. A bit lower ABV. Not the same as the Habitation but really good. I like the kick of the Habitation but also like the more subtle version. Nose of banana, fruit, ester and polish. Palate of ester, polish, citrus and mango. Long finish dominated by ester, tropical fruits and oak. 31-12-2025 - Rate 9.0 20-03-2026 - Rate 8.8

A Mhoba that convinces me incredibly. Lots of esters/polish and tropical fruits as well as caramel on one side, but also a very interesting spice influence with cinnamon in focus. Alcohol perfectly integrated!

This took maybe about 30 minutes if my memory serves me correctly. On the nose: Esters, fruity notes like pineapple and banana have more natural feel on the nose than the typical overripe note. Caramel notes give some nice balance. Light cinnamon notes and vanilla notes. Taste: Intense, fruity and little bit of sour at first. Then mouthfeel turn to little bit oily, roasted and you get some citrus notes, some spices like light cinnamon and light floral notes. Abv integration seems quite good. Finish: Fresh, warm, esters, oaky, spices like cinnamon and some pepper. Another very good Mhoba rum with good complexity and good range of notes all the way to finish.

Schade schade schade, das es als Geruch und Geschmacksvorschlag immer noch nicht Patex gibt. Das wäre hier echt passend und ich liebe es diese Nase, einfach geil. Allem in allem sehr intensiv genau gerade mein Geschmack.

Very nice and intense funk! On the nose I have many tropical fruits, esters, caramel and besides a pleasant buttery component also nice plastic notes. On the palate again powerful and sweet with tropical, overripe fruits, citrus fruits, cinnamon, floral accents and of course roasted aromas. The finish is not too long, but fruity again, fresh, with a great spice of esters and pepper. Everything is rounded off by the beautiful butteriness. I would thus call myself a Mhoba fan, as this rum is an attractive change from the other ester bombs. Thanks to @DrDjango for the sample. 😀

Alors c’est délicat pour moi, car j’en ai vu plusieurs des mhoba Et c’est le premier que j’apprécie Donc j’avais un peu d’appréhension avant de déguster Et là j’avoue belle surprise sur ce jus. Moi qui suis fan de la Jamaïque, J’ai retrouvé des marqueurs qui m’ont fait plaisir Belle, note de fruits , des esters. Une belle longueur en bouche et 1° d’alcool, à peine perceptible.. Vraiment très plaisant comme dégustation

WTF ist denn mit Mhoba los. An der Nase habe ich ein typische Hampden Profil In meinem Kopf. Und dann kommt die Überraschung am Gaumen. Immer noch etwas Klebstoff und Ester, aber eine unerwartete Frische, Mango und perfekt integrierter Alkohol. Tolles Teil.

29/07/2026: sample tasting @ home. The Mhoba distillate is very interesting, intense, tasty and this rum is no different. It has its own style of funk which is nice. Alcohol is integrated okay but could be better. I like this distillery a lot and look forward to trying more stuff in the future.

🥃 TWJ – Mhoba 2021 (59,5%) Direction l’Afrique du Sud 🇿🇦 Distillé en décembre 2020, vieilli en ex-bourbon, 137 bouteilles seulement. 👃 Nez explosif sur les esters et le fruité. Une vraie bombe aromatique. Une petite note beurrée vient bousculer la dégustation, mais l’ensemble reste hyper séduisant. Pour un rhum aussi jeune ? Franchement réussi. Les Mhoba addicts vont se régaler 🔥

Rich initial smell of banana, caramel and florals. Pours a rich golden. Fresh nectarine, apricot in the mouth. Some hot pepper. A little plastic on the finish, just kind of sticks its head out. Lots of booze on the finish, it hangs out for a while with a very hot feel. Sample from bottle split thanks to xamsx.
