THOMPSON BROS – CLARENDON / MONYMUSK MMW 1998 – 27 YEARS – 60.1% Now we're diving into Jamaica... and not with just anything! A 27-year-old Clarendon MMW 1998, bottled by Thompson Bros for 174 quid. Here, it's not just a bomb of esters and tropical fruits. 👃 Wax, ripe banana, citrus, olive, varnish... 🌊 with above all a strong saline and almost maritime backbone. At 60.1%, the whole thing remains tight and surprisingly controlled. Not necessarily the most exuberant or transcendent Clarendon we've tasted... but for 27 years of age, the value for money is honestly hard to criticize!

Thin, cheap dry wood like a novelty mini barrel, moderate tannins and definitely tastes way younger than 27 years, in a blind i would guess 1 to 2 years, maximum 3 years

Nose Very woody, quite toasty, toasted coconut and toasted bread. Slightly rancio-like hazelnutiness. Plenty of acetic acid. Very enjoyable caramel. Nice cherry bitters. Lots of cinnamon sticks. Beautiful lychee, sandalwood. Nougat, maybe pine honey. Light floral sakura-like undertones. Sweet red apple. A bit plasticky on one side, maybe burnt plastic. Industrial notes like grease. A bit of rose jam. Green olive-like notes far in the background. Very enjoyable! 88 Palate Quite tannic, a bitter texture. Body slightly above medium, sweetness slightly below medium. Sandalwood. Again rose petals, rose jam. Slight powderiness and again cinnamon sticks and nice vanilla sticks. Again ripe sour cherries. Nice plums, both red and green. Quite funky. Musk. Leather and shoe polish also obvious. Dry roses. A bit of melon. Red apple again. Very enjoyable! 87 Finish Elegant finish, sandalwood. Intensity can be called medium. Toasty side almost resembles a slight maltiness and toffee-like character. Nice spiciness, light nutmeg, plenty of cinnamon, cardamom, allspice. A bit of cocoa. White chocolate. Chicory, Nescafe granules. Obvious licorice root, maybe anise. Slight buttery background note. Minerality, lime and fresh paint. A nice finish. 87 Overall impression: Getting stocks at this age for this price spoils you; of course, thanks to the Thompson brothers, it has become a bit too common. Elegant sandalwood and rose nuances are very enjoyable. Nice rum! 88 Total: 87.5 [87] Value for money: Very good! Will I buy again?: Yes.

Bright lemon and toasted banana nose, hint of funk. Taste of apples, pear blossom, Calvados-esque, hint of cinnamon, ripe pineapple, ginger root, good amount of funk and fire. Wild and alive. Lovely oily finish.

An interesting Monymusk. Nose is minty, with menthol and coffee. Mouth is a bit layered, salty and iodine, with leather. Finish is roasted coffee and spice. Complex and needs some time
