One taster called it an "Outstanding Caroni that touches all my sweet spots," and the crowd agrees. This 1992 Velier is thick and oily, full of tar, rubber and bicycle-tube funk, cut through with a cooling menthol-mint streak and ripe tropical fruit. At 60% the alcohol sits perfectly integrated. Several rate it their best Caroni ever, though a couple wanted a touch more sweetness.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Brings the whole package - elegant sweetness, dirty notes, spice, wood... sensational depth. For me one of the best representatives ever from the legendary distillery. Caroni Champions League.

The nose is already incredibly deep and complex. Rubber, varnish, intense wood and a light mint. One finds here everything one expects from Caroni. Heavenly. On the palate you find a real Caroni concentrate. Spice, rubber, wood, tropical fruit are perfectly melded together by the long, tropical aging. Absolute Caroni Champions League!

A Caroni nose but with lots of fruit (apple, acerola, pear), tropical fruit and a Demerara side with old leather, old varnished wood and smoke. Silky, frosty entry, then fruit invades the palate. An aromatic bomb. Ripe tropical fruit, but also pear and apricot, menthol and herbs. Hints of machine shop are present, but in the background. There's an incredible freshness to this rum, reminiscent of frosted mandarin oranges. A long, majestic, rich and coherent finish (the kind of rum you can still smell when you wake up in the morning). A magnificent rum that lives up to its reputation, balanced in flavor and better than its little 55% brother.

17.11.2025 Finishing off this old sample while admiring my wife's packing skills. Still like it a lot. -------------+ This is a great Caroni and you know as soon as you open the bottle. The flavours just come at you right away. The nose is elegant and typical Caroni with tar and rubber trailed by flowers, fruit, caramel and a hint of mocha and cinnamon. The palate is spicy and complex and very well balanced, again with the typical Caroni tar and rubber trailed by fruit, wood and a slight hint of menthol. The finish is forever and lightly dry with fruit, tar and wood spices. I recommend leaving the empty glass and then nose it after a few hours.

For me the best from the 1992 Velier Caroni range. Amazing profile with dirty notes, lots of spice, wood and some fruit. Nice balance and mega depth and complexity. Definitely among the top Caronis.

Update: To celebrate the legalization of cannabis in the Federal Council, a third time in a glass today. Still surprisingly cool and tasty. The more pronounced (but beautiful) wood bitterness and the menthol are particularly appealing to me. It's amazing how much it differs from its High Proof brother. Red berries and red fruits are added here ... without too much annoying sweetness. Second tasting as part of the Rum X Rarities tasting: Now in peace and quiet and sober even more awesome.

Here you get Caroni essence.... Highly concentrated, intense, deep and complex nose. Lots of furniture polish like the 96, but also dirty aromas known from 98 and 2000. Lots of sweetness, honey, vanilla, caramel. On the palate an explosion of flavor, incredibly mouth-filling, oily and sweet. Rarely have I had a rum that convinced me so much taste-wise. ADDITION: I still find it really good, but it is no longer my number 1 as it once was. The rum has an extreme maturity level, which you really have to be in the mood for. There were days when it was definitely too much for me. Still, it is of course still a high level!

A sensational Caroni that represents the very essence of the late distillery. The nose is of rare depth, complexity and intensity. Menthol counterbalances empyreumatic notes (tar, rubber, smoke), oak, spices and leather to bring a welcome breath of freshness to this dark profile. Fruits (tropical in particular) take a back seat, but add a much-appreciated gourmet touch. A dirty rum, enchanting and complete. The attack on the palate is grandiose, with the fresh menthol still resting like velvet on the smoky notes, tar and rubber typical of Caroni. Spices (anise, pepper, vanilla), oak, walnuts, caramel, dried and exotic fruits form an ensemble of great clarity, depth, complexity and exquisiteness. The profile may be intense and very dry on the tannins, but the alcohol remains perfectly well integrated. The finish is long, dry, tannic, woody and empyreumatic. Spicy notes are present, but a saline edge adds complexity. Licorice, tobacco, berries and caramel give the final impression on the palate of a mythical rum, which has everything to please and will go down in legend as a benchmark in its field.

Grandiose Caroni from my year of birth 1992, very complex, balanced and elegant. Alcohol perfectly integrated. Papaya, cinnamon and sandalwood come together aromatically on the nose. Mint, menthol, cinnamon, caramelized apricots and red berries with cookie dough crumbs like a delicious peach crumble. An almost endless finish. Great! Thank you Oli!😃❣️

An outstanding Caroni. Top balance between balance and complexity. Relatively dry, but super tasty. Tar, leather, mint, menthol, tropical and red fruits, compote and with a good sweetness that rounds off the dry, dirty notes - all in a very good interplay. Very very tasty.

Rarities Tasting #5. And what a Caroni! In Tokaji Aszu wine, there is the particularly concentrated Aszu Eszencia. That's just what this is, a 'Caroni Essence'. Everything you would expect from a good (tropical) Caroni, only more concentrated, and all in a lovely balance of dirty and fruity notes ! My express thanks to Jakob!

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory rum, which was added at a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who took a liking to the rum because of its special taste. And the interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of "you need to try before you die" rums. I recommend it, Caroni is a truly unique rum.

Compared to the 55% version, you not only notice a bit more power. On the nose and palate, a few nice nuances are added. A re-tasting during the RumX Rarities Experience confirms my previous impressions. One of the best I've had in the glass so far. And again the experience that you have to give most rums a lot of time in the glass to get everything out. This morning the glass still smells phenomenal, I'd love to never rinse it again.

0.5cl in 1920s Blenders is enough to reach Caroni heaven. 🤩 Gasoline, tar, bicycle tube in epic splendor. Fisherman’s Friends. Behind that ripe mango, some citrus, oak and spices. Strong and balanced. To kneel before!! In the mouth woody, oily and resinous. I'm sucking at the gas pump.☺️ And then a long finish. Fresh, woody-spicy and bicycle tube. Phenomenal Caroni!! I'd say I haven't had a better one yet. 🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹 Many thanks to Bonn for this mega sample!!

Blind tasting on 20.10.2024: Guessing a tropical-aged Guyana rum. Typical dark color. Beautiful intense aromas of vanilla, dried fruits, and a pleasant sweetness. Looking forward to the reveal. Reveal: Caroni, and what a beautiful one. The rum needs its time to develop.

One of the top representatives of the 92 Caronis. Here you get the Caroni essence in pure form: dirty and dark aromas accompanied by mint and menthol. Real sweetness and fruits are only noticeable in the nose.

Quite close to the 18 years old FP version but we can feel the additional aging. Indeed, nose is slightly darker and palate feels a bit less funky and fruity than the "Cow" despite being already more funky than the nose. Same conclusion here, astonashing rum, probably one of the best I ever tasted ! 🖤🤍❤️

A wonderful Caroni that has plenty of tar, wood, spice, and depth under the hood. The nose is very aromatic and complex with aromas of tropical fruits, tar, leather, oak, rubber, caramel, vanilla, and roasted wood. Berries, clove, and sandalwood nicely round off the profile. On the palate, a creamy and dense texture emerges. Wood, tar, rubber, vanilla, cinnamon, spices, and tannins are expanded with berries, mint, bicycle inner tube, anise, and cask aromas into a great complexity. The long and spicy finish offers lots of Caroni spice. Wood, tar, menthol, tannins, spices, licorice, and smoked oak transition into caramel, cookie dough, cask notes, berries, and apricots. This 1992 Caroni is truly a big deal and should be enjoyed by every Trinidad lover. Very tasty and complex. Naturally with high-end alcohol integration. Many thanks to @Skyfly for the great sample 😃

"Happy Birthday to my son! RumX RARITIES 5 sounded on point for this first birthday. Crazy aromas, very thick, complex and really long. Love the fruits, leather, wood, menthol and unknown things! In summary, my tasting notes: On the nose: Leather, tropical fruits, oak, intense, pecan nuts. On the palate: Rubber, mentholated, woody, cinnamon, oak, complex, menthol, tannins, spicy, balanced. The finish rather oriented towards: Menthol, tannins, spicy, plum."

Nicely balanced, not as dirty for me as 1994, which makes it more complex with finer flowery, minty and fruity notes. Overall very good integration, wonder if waiting even longer than one hour would release more flavours, maybe would benefit also from a drop of water, I haven't checked it.

Another one of the top Caronis. This one will please those who look after the typical Caroni HTR tar, menthol and okay wood. It also has a good amount of tropical fruits and a buttery-ish caramel note.

This is a clear 3 points up from the 55%. Eventhoug it handled watering down well, this is intense, some glue that wasnt in the reduced and in all around demerara funk. Quite lovely stuff and high end Caroni.
