Don Papa Quincentennial Edition (2025 Release)
Anyone who wrote Don Papa off as sweet candy juice should try this one — it changes minds. At 50% it's dark and dry, full of dried fig, cherry, leather, coffee and clear port-cask spice. Several blind tasters guessed Trinidad or Guyana, not the Philippines. A long, woody, licorice-tinged finish. One real catch: a few still sense something faintly artificial.

Wow! I am overwhelmed by this intensity and complexity! After the Rare Cask and the first Quincentennial, I didn't expect any improvement, but this release is either on par or a notch more exciting. On the nose, wonderful aromas of wood, dried fruits, cherry, dark chocolate, leather, and nuts quickly spread. Roasted notes perfectly lead into licorice, brown caramel, cardamom, and baking spices. On the palate, a pleasant sweetness emerges first, then transitions to dried fruits, wood, cocoa, leather, clove, and vanilla. Licorice, roasted nuts, dark caramel, herbs, fruitcake, and coffee complement the aromatic profile into an interesting spectacle. The long and intense finish shows beautiful cask notes. Wood, dried plum, dried figs, leather, espresso, roasted notes, and cocoa now blend with brown caramel, black tea, and floral hints. I occasionally had associations with Trinidad, Guyana, and Mauritius. I really, really like this dram. How you can get such complexity from a blend of 7 and 10 years is beyond me. A serious recommendation to everyone who likes good rum, and the current bottle price is a gift. 😃

Every now and then, broaden your horizons and put prejudices to the test… 🤓🥃 Not an over-the-top rum, but with the Don Papa profile as I have it in my head, this rum really has nothing to do with it. Exciting development at Don Papa! I don't notice any (negative) added sugar. On the contrary, nicely dry with pleasant bitter notes. Nice, long, dark, heavy finish. Is Don Papa growing up now?! 😳

Very dark color in the glass Nose: Cotton candy, burnt sugar, dark dried fruits, caramel, doesn’t seem nearly as artificial on the nose as, for example, Don Papa Baroko, but I still can’t shake the impression of artificial flavors – though maybe I’m biased. The rum smells lighter than the dark color suggests. Palate: lots of barrel and tannins, dried fruits, here the column still character comes through, alcohol is moderately well integrated. Finish: burnt sugar, slightly bitter, licorice. I honestly expected more. The 50% ABV gives the rum more power at first. However, the alcohol isn’t optimally integrated and the column still character is noticeable. The hydrometer test with temperature compensation shows 49.7% – that’s within measurement and error tolerance. So obviously no additives were used here, at least none that affect this measuring technique.

I have to admit I’m extremely positively impressed. With Don Papa, I wouldn’t have expected this consistently dark flavor profile. I would say that either no sugar or very little sugar has been added. The value for money with this rum is really good.

Danke an Adrianv für dieses Sample. Don Papa ist nicht gerade für ehrliche Rums bekannt. Die Nase ist eher dünn gemessen an 50%. Dennoch ausgewogen, fruchtig. Im Mund schon mehr Power. Kräftige Fasseinflüsse, trocken würzig, schwerer Rotwein, röstig/Lakritz, Kräuter/Tabak. Könnte ein erster guter Rum von Don Papa sein?

So today I'm trying this new Don Papa in the glass. The nose is quite intense with sweet port wine notes. On the palate, it's quite pleasant but intense. Definitely better than what you usually get from Don Papa. Port wine without any bitter or sour notes, not too sweet, and actually quite drinkable. Not really my style, but I have to admit I don't think it's bad objectively. Price-wise, though, it's a bit ambitious for what it offers me.

Das soll Don Papa sein?!😅 Hätte blind eher auf einen alten kräftigen Kubaner oder vllt sogar einen Diamond getippt. Intensive Noten nach Tabak, kräftigem Mokka und Kaffee, Vanille, Kardamom und leicht verbrannte BBQ artige Aromen, sowie rote Früchte wie Kirsche, getrocknete und Dörrpflaume sowie intensive Tannine und viel Bitterstoffe wie bei Lakritz und etwas Schwarztee. Das Port cask ist schnell erkennbar aber ohne zu dominant zu sein. Insgesamt auch nicht so süß wie befürchtet aber irgendwie trau ich dem Braten nicht 100% das das wirklich Ausschließlich philippinischer Rum als Basis sein soll... Dennoch ein grundsätzlich gut gemachter Tropfen den man echt gut trinken kann!

Another great bottling from the Bleeding Heart Rum Company, which most rum enthusiasts don’t have on their radar. Especially fans of Trinidad, Guyana, and of course Port wine will get their money’s worth here, and now at the release for just 110 euros, it’s a real bargain. On the nose, lots of fruit right away, plenty of spices, and clearly the Port wine. The velvety aroma of rosehip jam also stands out to me at first. Later on, a fruity BBQ sauce even comes through. On the palate, you get the Trinidad character with herbs, intense wood, and baking spices. The 2025 release is overall more caramel-like than the first one. The Guyana funk, which reminds me of beeswax notes, doesn’t keep you waiting either. The long and spicy finish has lots of wood, clove, herbs, and brown sugar.

Meine Don Papa Zeit ist erst gut 2 Jahre zurück. Die Neuauflage kann sich für mich auch jetzt sehen lassen. Etwas Süße mit Frucht. Leider hält alles nicht lange an. Ist aber für der Preis echt gut zu trinken.

Taste-wise, it’s not far from Cognac. Aged 18 years in Bourbon & Port casks. The Port influence dominates strongly. Highly praised, but it doesn’t meet my expectations or taste at all. Not worth the money for me (100 EUR).

Don Papa ist wohl die Marke, die keiner so wirklich ernst nimmt. An anderer Stelle hatte ich mal den Sevillana (aus Neugier gekauft) als toilett rinser bezeichnet. Dieser hier ist schon eine andere Liga, aber auch nicht der Oberklopper. Am vorderen Gaumen zunächst etwas dünn, ansonsten Rosinen, Trockenfrüchte und Melasse. Im Abgang störende Bitternoten mit Leder. Ich mich auch nicht ganz des Eindrucks befreien irgendetwas künstliches zu schmecken. Ganz nett, aber für mich sicher keine 8. Kein Vergleich mit Produkten aus karibischen Gefilden.

Simply amazing complexity with toasted maple syrup, vanilla, oak on the nose with a definite port forward richness and then liquorice and oak followed by dates and dried figs with a real decadent 'rum and raisin' and rich spice, dried herbs of tarragon, hyssop and spearmint overlays. The finish... wow! It goes on for minutes, sticky toffee and figs with herbal spice.

In der Nase für mich Honig, getrocknete Früchte, Holz und Gewürze. Im Geschmack sind die gleichen Noten zu erkennen. Nur der Alkohol Gehalt finde ich etwas zu stark und nicht perfekt Eingebungen ansonsten gutes Produkt.
