Every now and then, broaden your horizons and put prejudices to the test… 🤓🥃 Not an over-the-top rum, but with the Don Papa profile as I have it in my head, this rum really has nothing to do with it. Exciting development at Don Papa! I don't notice any (negative) added sugar. On the contrary, nicely dry with pleasant bitter notes. Nice, long, dark, heavy finish. Is Don Papa growing up now?! 😳

Blind tasting of Gunnar's sample at the 4th GAF Stuttgart Edit: yes, I didn't get it either, it was a Spanish style that was possibly aged longer in the cask. This has nothing to do with Don Papa as I know the sugary stuff, luckily. But unfortunately, it's not a unicorn either.

Wow! I'm overwhelmed by this intensity and complexity! After the Rare Cask and the first Quincentennial, I didn't expect any improvement, but this release is either on par or a notch more exciting. On the nose, wonderful aromas of wood, dried fruits, cherry, dark chocolate, leather, and nuts quickly spread. Roasted notes perfectly lead to licorice, brown caramel, cardamom, and baking spices. On the palate, a pleasant sweetness comes through first, then transitions to dried fruits, wood, cocoa, leather, clove, and vanilla. Licorice, roasted nuts, dark caramel, herbs, fruitcake, and coffee complement the aroma into an interesting spectacle. The long and intense finish shows beautiful cask notes. Wood, dried plum, dried figs, leather, espresso, roasted notes, and cocoa now blend with brown caramel, black tea, and floral hints. I occasionally had associations with Trinidad, Guyana, and Mauritius. I really, really like this dram. How you can get this complexity from a blend of 7 and 10 years is beyond me. A serious recommendation to everyone who likes good rum, and the current bottle price is a gift. 😃

As already written here several times, this is naturally a positive surprise from Don Papa. It is a very dark rum, cocoa, coffee and mocha are recognizable on the palate, also slightly woody on the nose.

Very dark color in the glass Nose: Cotton candy, burnt sugar, dark dried fruits, caramel, doesn’t seem nearly as artificial on the nose as, for example, Don Papa Baroko, but I still can’t shake the impression of artificial flavors – though maybe I’m biased. The rum smells lighter than the dark color suggests. Palate: lots of barrel and tannins, dried fruits, here the column still character comes through, alcohol is moderately well integrated. Finish: burnt sugar, slightly bitter, licorice. I honestly expected more. The 50% ABV gives the rum more power at first. However, the alcohol isn’t optimally integrated and the column still character is noticeable. The hydrometer test with temperature compensation shows 49.7% – that’s within measurement and error tolerance. So obviously no additives were used here, at least none that affect this measuring technique.

On aeration, bbq notes, roasted nuts, pastry and fruitcake arise, orange peel, tropical fruits like passion fruit and maracuja. 7,9:On the palate, the attack is slightly disbalanced with toasted wood notes like cocoa, nuts, leather, later fruitcake, spicy with pepper, allspice, dark molasses with licorice, floral, fruits like dried apricots, raisins, currants and berries, tropical fruits, port barrel impact is obvious, medicinal, dry and tannic, when the rum is well rested. 8,2:The finish is medium long, dry&tannic, port barrel impact is strong, oak is roasted with cocoa, nuts, leather, pastry, espresso, spicy with allspice, caramelized, fruity with tons odlično dried fruits, citrus fruits, sour cherry, grapes, some fruits are candied, molasses is dark with black tea..

Is this supposed to be Don Papa?!😅 Blind, I would have guessed an old, strong Cuban or maybe even a Guyana Diamond. Intense notes of tobacco, strong mocha and coffee, vanilla, cardamom, and slightly burnt BBQ-like aromas, as well as red fruits like cherry, dried and prunes, plus intense tannins and lots of bitterness like licorice and some black tea. The Port cask is quickly recognizable but not too dominant. Overall, it's not as sweet as feared, but somehow I don't fully trust that this is really exclusively Filipino rum as the base... Still, a basically well-made drop that you can really enjoy!

#6893 07.06.2026 Time for a few samples to get back on track after yesterdays nice tasting arranged by Charles from Rum Depot in Berlin. Considering the rest of the Don Papa range, this one does really well and the price tag is also good. A fruity rum with nice honey, caramel, spices, roasted wood, fruits and faint chocolate.

I have to admit I’m extremely positively impressed. With Don Papa, I wouldn’t have expected this consistently dark flavor profile. I would say that either no sugar or very little sugar has been added. The value for money with this rum is really good.

Thanks to Adrianv for this sample. Don Papa is not exactly known for honest rums. The nose is rather thin considering 50%. Still balanced, fruity. On the palate more power. Strong barrel influences, dry spicy, heavy red wine, roasted/licorice, herbs/tobacco. Over 10 years ago I drank my first Don Papa in France, I found it okay then. Had tried little though. Afterwards I found Don Papa hardly drinkable. But I have to honestly say this 2025 release tastes really good to me. I'm positively surprised.

Don Papa is probably the brand that no one really takes seriously. Elsewhere, I once called the Sevillana (bought out of curiosity) a toilet rinser. This one is definitely a different league, but still not top-notch. On the front palate, a bit thin at first, otherwise raisins, dried fruits, and molasses. The finish has annoying bitter notes with leather. I also can't quite shake the impression of tasting something artificial. Quite nice, but definitely not an 8 for me. No comparison to products from Caribbean regions.

Received a sample of this and was ready to give it a 1 based on my previous experience with the brand. However I was pleasantly surprised. This actually tastes like rum. Notes of cherry, oak, cinnamon and chocolate. Still too sweet and with some odd flavours. But the best Don Papa I have tasted. Not that it is saying a lot. I've seen this bottle priced at over 300 euros. Though 150 seems to be the norm. But even that is overpriced compared to the competition at the price point.

Blind tasted and found really interesting. Thanks to Gunnar for this. I would never have guessed Don Papa, which I had stored as a sugar slop producer. Hats off to Don Papa for this rum, which was multifaceted both on the nose and on the palate and definitely did not taste sweetened.

So today I'm trying this new Don Papa in the glass. The nose is quite intense with sweet port wine notes. On the palate, it's quite pleasant but intense. Definitely better than what you usually get from Don Papa. Port wine without any bitter or sour notes, not too sweet, and actually quite drinkable. Not really my style, but I have to admit I don't think it's bad objectively. Price-wise, though, it's a bit ambitious for what it offers me.

Taste-wise, it’s not far from Cognac. Aged 18 years in Bourbon & Port casks. The Port influence dominates strongly. Highly praised, but it doesn’t meet my expectations or taste at all. Not worth the money for me (100 EUR).

My Don Papa time is just about 2 years back. The new edition can also be seen now. Some sweetness with fruit. Unfortunately, everything doesn’t last long. But for the price, it’s really good to drink.

Tasted blind at GAF2026 and completely off. Would never have guessed Don Papa and so, as bitter as it is, I have to tip my hat here. The bottling isn't that bad. At least I found the French oak. On the nose lots of fruit and cask. Plus a nice sweetness. On the palate not easy-drinking, but tending that way. Full-bodied with fruit, wood and spice. It's pleasant and tastes good. I had estimated it much more expensive. Therefore a clear buying recommendation if you can overcome your hesitation. I actually still struggle with it 😑 makes you think. Conclusion: more blind tastings.

Another great bottling from the Bleeding Heart Rum Company, which most rum enthusiasts don’t have on their radar. Especially fans of Trinidad, Guyana, and of course Port wine will get their money’s worth here, and now at the release for just 110 euros, it’s a real bargain. On the nose, lots of fruit right away, plenty of spices, and clearly the Port wine. The velvety aroma of rosehip jam also stands out to me at first. Later on, a fruity BBQ sauce even comes through. On the palate, you get the Trinidad character with herbs, intense wood, and baking spices. The 2025 release is overall more caramel-like than the first one. The Guyana funk, which reminds me of beeswax notes, doesn’t keep you waiting either. The long and spicy finish has lots of wood, clove, herbs, and brown sugar.

Received a sample from RumX. Sweet and alcoholic on the nose, sweet on the palate. Long rummy finish. Perhaps a hint of chocolate, caramel, and barrel notes. Kind of reminds me of El Dorado 15 Years 2020 edition. Slightly hot; burns a little on the nose as well. Not to critique, overall very enjoyable, and quickly finished.

Simply amazing complexity with toasted maple syrup, vanilla, oak on the nose with a definite port forward richness and then liquorice and oak followed by dates and dried figs with a real decadent 'rum and raisin' and rich spice, dried herbs of tarragon, hyssop and spearmint overlays. The finish... wow! It goes on for minutes, sticky toffee and figs with herbal spice.

Wow - this really is a chameleon! Extremely fruity on the nose, red fruits, tropical fruits, mild, hints of sweetness, a bit of floral too. On the palate at first fruity, more dried fruits, raisin, moving over tobacco (sic!) to woody, oaky notes, dry, with a spicy long, dry finish. If at all, only very slight sweetness. I'm slowly starting to understand what is called 'complexity' in the rum bubble. Drinks: - Neat: 4.5/5 - Rum Old Fashioned: 4/5 (port comes a bit too much to the fore) - Rum Punch: 4/5
