Foursquare Old Brigand
Apple, cashew and a light oak-toffee sweetness, with a slight roughness and warmth that 43% can't quite hide. This is the young, higher-pot-still Foursquare from Barbados — rougher and less creamy than Doorly's, several tasters note. Fine neat but a touch edgy; most agree it really comes alive as a mixer. Tropical fruit, vanilla, a faint solvent note, medium finish.
- Great in cola
- Fruity, nutty nose
- Everyday value

How does Foursquare Old Brigand taste?
Aggregated from 19 community reviews.
Fruity, edgy young Bajan mixer Most call it a fine everyday mixing rum — fruity, lightly woody, a bit rough and edgy neat. Pleasant but unremarkable; many say it shines in a rum and coke rather than a tasting glass.

Tasted 10-02-2024 Nosing Cashews, apples ,light oak & cherry Tasting Starts with light oak then builds into a fruity.note that's light ... You can easily see why this is a lighter doorlys but heavenly as a mixer just missing that Barbados sunshine ..

Had a friend who went to Babados recently and brought 1.75L plastic bottle of this home. It's about what you would expect from a Foursquare of this price range. A solid rum primarily made as a mixer but is perfectly fine to drink neat if you wish. It's nothing amazing but it's got a nice nose on it. Quite dark in colour for only 5 years of aging. Taste wise there is a nice sweetness, fruits, spice, vanilla and some wood. The ideal everyday mixing rum.

Surprisingly complex on the nose. Beautifully fruity, slightly tart. Partly goes in the direction of vinegar. Some sweetness from dried fruit and honey, but restrained. There is something Christmassy and spicy, perhaps dried ginger? Pleasantly creamy in the mouth, but still somewhat difficult to grasp and describe more precisely after the first tasting. After the first impression, a delicious and surprisingly complex rum. Good to drink neat, but will probably become boring at some point. But it's certainly also great in drinks. Nice to have tried it, but it's not the end of the world that it's not available in Germany. The alcohol is a little too present for the 43%, which is a little distracting when enjoyed neat, but it's great in drinks.

Picked this up from the duty free in Barbados airport a bar man recommended it on the beach makes a great rum and coke and excellent value for money think I paid about 25 pound for a 1.75ltr bottle

Tasting as part of my Barbados tour and a tasting at the distillery. A classic cocktail rum. Somewhat restrained tropical fruit, wood and citrus on the nose. Round taste, well-integrated alcohol. Fine woody notes, pineapple, tropical fruit, some spices. Solid.

Pretty meaningless rum, you can drink it without it hurting.

#4612 09.02.2024 Nordlichter treffen. This one could be a good mixer I think. Nose Light wood and roasted notes, fruity, vanilla, light nutts, faint polish. Palate Light oily, wood, light roasted, fruity, light herbs, caramel, warm. Finish Medium long, warm, dried fruit.

Tasted at the Nordlichter Treffen - thanks, Henry! I hunted this rum in vain in my early rum days. Wes described it as the young Foursquare with the highest potstill content. That's what I wanted for my drinks. In my opinion, I can actually taste the higher potstill content compared to the Doorlys 3 yo. This one is rougher with light esters and not quite as creamy and smooth as the Doorlys. The typical coconut note is missing here, the nuts are more like almonds or hazelnuts. I like these young bajan rums, this one probably wouldn't have been worth the hunt.

Nice nose, but also a little coarse. A little sweet but also edgy. Short finish

Cellar find. Definitely a typical representative from Barbados and typical Foursquare notes are also recognizable. However, the price level is definitely noticeable, the rum seems thin, sharp-edged and unround. Perhaps something for a cola, but I don't need it neat again.
