Sipped neat, this is textbook Caroni: rubber, tar and workshop oil hit first, then roasted fruit pushes back — caramelised mango, candied papaya, a peach sweetness underneath. A menthol-liquorice coolness runs through the whole thing and keeps the heavy dark notes from flattening it. Starts a touch thin, then fills out; at 55.3% the alcohol sits well integrated. Long, oily, dirty finish.

Powerful Caroni. On the nose, lots of dirt, tar, rubber, leather, dark dried fruits, menthol, a bit of mango and papaya. On the palate, very heavy and oily. Also dirty tar, leather, roast, coffee, dark chocolate, some cassis and dark berries. Alcohol very well integrated. Finish long and dirty but with nice fruitiness.

For a 98 Caroni not necessarily bad, but unfortunately not one that will make it into my top group. As always with Mika's bottlings a nice label, but the bottle size and price don't really match for me here.

For my taste, this is a really great Caroni with lots of spice and dark notes. On the nose, I get fruits, dark old wood, rubber, menthol, mango, papaya, and glue. Added to that are roasted caramel combined with nice barrel notes. On the palate, there is an intense fruitiness at the start, accompanied by licorice, oak, dried fruits, rubber, menthol, and wood. Yellow fruits, papaya, mango, tar, and roots provide a full Caroni spectrum. The long and spicy finish offers fruits, menthol, incense, rubber, spices, tar, smoky leather, malt, yellow fruits, and tea. The alcohol is very well integrated, so this Caroni drinks quite smoothly despite the "dirty" and spicy aromas. Many thanks to @Banana Joe for this great sample 😋

SWELL – CARONI HTR 1998 – 28 YEARS – 55.3% To finish, impossible not to bring out a little piece of history... CARONI. TRINIDAD. 1998. HTR. 28 YEARS. 🛢️🔥 Brand new Wild Card Series #8 bottling from Swell de Spirits, offered in a rather unusual 20 cl format. And finally... perfect format to close a tasting with a 28-year-old Caroni without having to sell a kidney! 😂 HTR – Heavy Trinidad Rum – so naturally, we expect the legendary Caroni markers: tar, rubber, hydrocarbons, grease, and mechanic workshop. 👃 On the nose? Promise kept! You really find that dark, industrial, and immediately identifiable universe. 👅 On the palate? And there... a bit of a cold shower. The industrial side fades strongly in favor of roasted and candied fruits: mango, papaya, peach... accompanied by menthol and licorice. It's not bad, far from it. But when the nose promises you a trip to an old Trinidad garage and the palate finally takes you to the fruit vendor... naturally, you're left a bit hungry! 😅 And especially: where did the length go? For a 28-year-old Caroni, the finish seemed surprisingly short. 👉 Promising nose. 👉 Decent but restrained palate. 👉 Disappointing finish. A bit... very disappointed at first! 😬

The typical Caroni signature is present. It feels very dense and brings an intense industrial note with it. Gradually, the rum opens up in the glass, revealing aromas of roasted fruits, caramelized mango, candied papaya, and sweet peach. A hint of licorice and menthol runs through the bouquet, providing a pleasant freshness that counteracts the deep dark notes. The longer it breathes in the glass, the more fascinating the contrast between tarry warmth and sweet fruits becomes. On the palate, it is extremely full-bodied and powerful at the start. Workshop notes, oil, and rubber dominate. Very quickly, however, the fresh and roasted fruits return. Mango, papaya, and peach bring a wonderful, rich sweetness. The menthol-like freshness slowly builds in the background. It is well balanced for its high intensity and feels very rounded. The finish with notes of tar and rubber is long and enduring, accompanied by the roasted fruits. Later, the menthol returns and leaves a heavy freshness that perfectly prolongs the enjoyment. A Caroni HTR as I like it. It impresses with its extremely typical notes, where the force of industrial aromas meets a beautiful, fruity richness.

A wonderful Caroni with everything that belongs to it. The nose is still a bit reserved with some rubber and solvent. On the palate also first a bit thin, but then comes with all the advantages of a Caroni. Overall very successful.

Lots of menthol, quite bitter, coffee, roasted. Reminds me more of a dark TDL without much fruit. Tropical fruits are more in the background.
