Velier Appleton Hearts Collection (2025 Edition) 1999
People are genuinely split on this 26-year Appleton. Everyone agrees the nose is lovely — dried fruit, spice, resin, a touch of mint — but the palate turns very woody and drying, with cola-nut herbal notes and heat that takes a long time to settle. Give it an hour in the glass and it opens up. Dark, spicy, tropical esters underneath, but the oak dominates.

How does Velier Appleton Hearts Collection (2025 Edition) 1999 taste?

Woody, spicy old Appleton that needs air Great nose, serious tannic oak on the palate. Several find the alcohol poorly integrated and the wood too heavy; fans call it complex and satisfying once it breathes for an hour.

So, after I had the rum in the glass yesterday and it surprisingly didn't convince me, I of course had to taste it again today, this time against the "old" Appleton 1999 (RX7801). And now, after the tasting, I (almost) stick to my verdict from yesterday: RX26144 is a solid rum for advanced drinkers, but unfortunately on the palate it not only has an acidity problem (wet wood), but the alcohol is also not very well integrated. Quite different is RX7801: balanced, optimally "powered," with a great and rare juniper note as well as fennel (?) – herbs like I like in rum. Please try the two rums against each other yourselves, then you might understand why the "new" Appleton 1999 doesn't score quite as well with me as you might expect given the specs.

I like it clearly better than the old 1999. Still clearly on the woody, musty herbal side but with more dried fruits, less woody acidity, and a bit more depth and spice. The alcohol could be a bit better integrated but overall it's definitely an improvement over the old 1999 bottling. Still, it won't be my favorite in the Hearts series. 😄 Especially that juniper herbal, tree resin note just annoys me a lot. Sorry.😄

I was eagerly awaiting this new 99er Appleton Hearts. Somehow it’s a bit different from how I remember the others in the series. But I think it really needs a lot of time to develop because it’s a bit alcoholic. After a good while, though, it’s finally there.

Nose: well-balanced mix of mild esters and dried fruits, spices and cask influence Palate: alcoholic, dried fruits, again weak esters, spice and cask influence Finish: cask-driven, dried fruits, spice The rum is good, super balanced, for my taste almost too homogeneous and in my opinion the alcohol is not well integrated. The esters surprised me positively, I didn't know that from Appleton before.

After a long breathing time (which this rum really needs because of the alcohol strength), a wide potpourri of tropical fruits, a pleasant sweetness, intense wood, and various spices reveal themselves – with every sip, you taste something new here. I'm curious how the open bottle will change the rum.

Borderline woody, tropical esters, very light fruits, dominant mint notes. I need to compare it with the other Appletons sometime. Right now, after some rather mediocre rums, this one surprisingly seems pretty good to me...

Relaxing with a few samples after a nice day at work and a fast walk home. Watching Gold Rush on HBO. A very refreshing profile with fruits, chocolate, spice, roasted wood, nuts, dry, salt, chocolate, caramel, ester, herbs.

Nice, very strong and spicy Appleton. Dark profile with plenty of alcohol. Great nose.

First of all, a beautiful color, oily streaks. Clear similarity to the predecessor. Lacquer and glue, those are the higher congener values compared to the 1999.1. Overall spicier, more complex and deeper, but less smooth. Even after 90 minutes not fully opened, we add a few drops 💧. Now fresher, mint and chocolate. In the mouth very woody and astringent. 1984 peeks around the corner. Short finish. Herbs and spices. Great nose, but then way too woody. The 1999.1 is definitely more of a sipper. All in all, it falls short of my expectations. Besides suboptimal alcohol integration, the esters are almost too prominent for an Appleton. But that's just my personal taste. In my opinion, it wasn't bottled because the rum developed well, but simply because it was available. It's still a good rum, but nothing outstanding.

The second bottling of the 1999 Hearts series. Won't be my favorite vintage and it needs some time in the glass. But then you get a complex bottling which, like the first 1999 bottling, doesn't hit my personal taste. But you get an interplay of bitter wood notes, pleasant sweetness, herbs, spices and subtle tropical fruit notes. Probably it's the more dominant herbal note (especially in the finish, where I only taste wood, herbs, kola nut (?)) that I didn't like so much.

I like it very much. Dark profile, yet surprisingly lively, without annoying bitterness. Spice, light fruity notes, and a petrol-like note that fits well. Alcohol integration is brilliant. Only the somewhat unspectacular finish prevents a rating above 90.

Probably the first Appleton that really grabs me. Spicy, dry, fruity, woody... Alcohol very well integrated. The alcohol is very well integrated, but you have to give it a little time, otherwise the alcohol feels too present.

Honestly, this one was a ride. Firstly, this is a sweet and strong rum - do not take it lightly. Onto the review. The smell is outright sweet and alcoholic but has a lot of woody smell. I was impressed as it is the first time I actually smelled the wood. Tasting is another ride. First off the alcohol is very very strong here and then the flavours beneath it are just as dominating. The blend of spiciness and sweet sensations melded well to leave a very long lasting impression. When I say it lasted, it is the first rum ever to leave an actual taste for more than a couple of minutes. I will only recommend this rum to rum lovers. This is after considering the price per bottle and the value it holds. Also please consider using a wine cork dispenser - the bottle is not very well designed for pouring (wasted a shot to pour out 2).

Great rum with a pronounced wood note. Nose with the expected ester notes, dried fruits, and wood. On the palate leathery, again with wood and dried fruits, nutty and a hint of cardamom. Extremely long finish with caramel, banana, grape, and tobacco.

Vintage 2025. With 8.7 out of 10, it ranks among the better ones I've had in my glass.

This is what I’m looking for in an Appleton. String fruity and spice notes that integrate well their the age and wood. Needs a fair amount of time to breath and I find the wood is really the strongest flavor here (shouldn’t be a surprise based on the amount of tropical aging) but for the niche it fills I find it one of the most satisfying releases. Would I buy it again for the price? Probably not. But it is a great bottle to have in the collection and one I will reach for when I’m really craving

Decomposed by the wood. I like the nose and it is clearly more pleasant than the old 1999. On the palate then lots of wood, bitter substances and herbs. I vaguely associate herbal liqueur. Alcohol surprisingly poorly integrated. The rum remains alcoholic and is very dry. I was never a fan of the 1999 Hearts. This is a consistent continuation of the flavor direction of the vintage. It's not my thing. Edit: after two hours in the glass it gets significantly better and the alcohol lets the rum unfold a bit. So definitely upgraded. Still not really convincing in the end.
