Nose: immediately and clearly reminds me of Clairin and that crazy bottling from the old Tabakstube: RX18080! Overripe pineapple, glue and varnish, butter, cookie dough, cheese, wet hay, smoke, bacon, all with very high intensity. No sign of barrel or roast notes. Palate: very sharp attack, alcohol is very noticeable, after all nearly 70%! Again butter, cheese, Clairin, pineapple etc. plus young wood and a few shy roast notes and lots of sweetness! Finish: medium to long, consistent with nose and palate. The intensity fades quite quickly but nuances remain very long. Very intense rum, anything but round, I recommend starting with very small sips. If you like Clairin and the mentioned Tabakstube bottling, you will find everything here - just amplified. With better integrated alcohol, about 0.3 points more would be possible. I love such crazy rums!

Ester Hunter Catch 7: full on the 12. Mhoba as it’s written in the book but with almost even more power than usual. On the nose, overripe pineapple and papaya and other undefinable tropical fruits come together, almost bordering on fermented. Along with peanut butter, bacon, Spanish brandy, some cheese, and fresh, damp hay. On the palate, it’s noticeably more sour and salty than expected. Basically salty, sour, smoky, and rather dry. The acidity runs intensely through to the finish, more like a definitely overripe pineapple, slightly cheesy (feta in brine), and musty. I can partly understand the compost heap comment, you really have to be into that. The score could have been higher for me if the nose and palate were closer, but for me they’re quite far apart. For me, it’s a bit too extreme! I prefer other Mhoba styles...

Mhoba back then, when I tried my first one, was rather not this niche. Meanwhile, they have established themselves very well. This one has a slight cheese note similar to a Clairin. I wouldn't have expected that. Once again, a very crazy Mhoba.

Once again a very successful bottling from Mhoba.. wild, unruly and funky. As so often, Mhoba remains consistently good with steady quality. However, I'm still waiting for an older bottling ☺️

Mhoba likes to play with extremes due to its artisanal production, but this bottling is the most intense I've had from this small distillery in the glass. The initial punch of esters on the receptors with lots of astringency and acidity in the mouth is almost too much for me, even though I find the morbid notes of fermenting lemon and pineapple peels on slightly rotting grass quite exciting and, like the cheesy undertone, not unpleasant. The barrel also had better days. Apart from a slight woody smoke note and little vanilla, not much comes through. Overall a really good and challenging rum, driven by esters and with many edges and corners. Fun, but definitely not an easy enjoyment.

Tasting on 24.07.2026 RX 26175 Mhoba TEH Catch 7. Whisky Watcher sample. Nose: Sugarcane juice, tropical overripe fruit, lacquer and glue. Palate: Butter and nuts, overripe tropical fruit like roasted pineapple and lemon. Herbs and olives with plenty of ester compounds. The finish is salty, almost brine, light cask and roasted lemon. Glass: Brine and olives. Tasting “In the cave”

Very intense on the nose. Glue, varnish, pineapple. On the palate, however, surprisingly well-balanced. Interesting cheese note, like in Clairin Rocher. Endless finish. Great rum!

#6891 07.06.2026 Time for a few samples to get back on track after yesterdays nice tasting arranged by Charles from Rum Depot in Berlin. A very nice high ester rum with a great price tag in my mind. Intense rum with lots of esters, overripe fruits, olive, polish, salty olives, herbs, spice and roasted wood.

Mhoba has long since stopped being a hidden gem; they've really established themselves in the market. This bottling is full-on "in your face." The nose could also be an unaged WP RumBar mixed with a Clairin. Definitely not a daily sipper; you really have to be in the mood to drink this neat. Maybe okay as a mixer.

Another Mhoba release for tonight. On the nose: Canejuice forward notes with light smoky notes, bacon notes and light cheese notes. Bacon and cheese notes do come more forward as the rum opens up. Taste: Intense. Overripe pineapples at first. Then you get fermented notes, olive brine notes, sugarcane notes and some salty notes. Light cheese notes. Mouthfeel is slightly buttery. Finish: Olive brine notes, vegetal notes, salty notes and barrel notes in the end. Medium-long finish. Interesting rum with some similarities with Clairin rums. Powerhouse with some interesting notes, i like this rum.

26/06/2026: Road Rummers Supertasting @ TastToe. This is one dirty motherf**, and I like it. On the nose I instantly got tomato puree and BBQ sauce. It's like nosing a green organic waste bin. Easily the dirtiest MHOBA I've tasted so far. You get a lot for your money with this release!

One of the fruitiest Mhobas I've tried so far. Less of that plastic/steppe grass aroma. Alcohol well integrated, really fun! Very intense, not a relaxed sipper. Not particularly complex, but very tasty.

In the glass it shows a nice color and not very viscous, quite fluid; On the nose it is very fragrant with scents of fruit, glues and varnishes; On the palate I found everything the nose perceived but at times it reminds me of a Clairin and the alcohol is very, very well integrated. If you let it open, after some time in the glass it becomes even more interesting for the olfactory profile and also on the palate. The finish is medium, I expected it to be longer also due to the alcohol strength. An excellent Mhoba, highly recommended.

Great fruity nose, especially pineapple is very present. On the palate somewhat reserved in this regard, here a saltier, drier taste comes to the fore. Alcohol is very well integrated. Overall, it could probably still benefit from a few more years in the cask.
