Foursquare ECS XXX Penultimus 2010
The Moscatel cask is the twist here — it pushes this 15-year Foursquare toward syrup, honey and dried apricot in a way the ECS line usually doesn't. Underneath sits the familiar chocolate, caramel and toasted oak, with orange peel and a whiff of coconut and glue. Most drinkers like it; several call out a bitter, tannic streak in the finish and say it's not the strongest ECS. The 57% is well integrated.

How does Foursquare ECS XXX Penultimus 2010 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Moscatel-finished FS, sweeter with a bitter edge Well-liked but not top-tier Foursquare — the Moscatel finish wins over most, though a fair few find the bitter, tannic edge in the finish a step down from recent ECS bottlings.

What a delicious rum. Not as sharp as you are used to from the ECS line. Delicious chocolate, vanilla, caramel, honey, wood with the typical Foursquare spices. This is a true connoisseur with the quality you can expect from FS. Thanks to this rum, I now also know that I love the Moscatel finish.

I don't even try to hide my disappointment. Either the Seales still had something in reserve that had to go or the one lost bet prompted Richard to slap his ECS sticker on this distillate. Just take the typical Foursquare uniform mix of chocolate/vanilla/fruits/blabla and add a metallic, bitter-sweet note to the whole. That's how I imagine the taste of mercury. The bottling has something of its own, shows character - but it's not my thing. Thanks to @tim for the split, otherwise I would have stored several bottles. So 5cl over three evenings in a row was enough to be sure I didn't just have a bad day.

#6954 23.06.2026 Picked up the wife from work and my walk today was fast and very hot. Time for some samples and some Trance on Spotify. Good rum with a nice price tag in my mind. Nicely balanced and fruity with chocolate, spices, herbs, light tobacco and roasted wood with some tannins.

So this is supposed to be the second to last one from Richard? Personally, I expected a bit more. As always with Foursquare, high quality, but unfortunately it can't really keep up with the latest bottlings. Nice to have tried it, but I wouldn't need another bottle.

An ordinary mid-range FSQ where the cask influence was probably a bit too intense, so both coconut and intense dried fruits take a bit of a backseat. On the other hand, the alcohol is perfectly integrated.

On the nose floral-citrusy (orange), decent barrel and the obligatory coconut. On the palate a mix of caramel sweetness and quite bitter notes / tannins. I found the Equidem clearly better last time.

What a disappointment I think this must be one of the worst I've tasted from them!!! Alcohol, not very well integrated, some acidity, rather short length, I don't like it at all Luckily I only have 5 cl!!! I feel like a page is turning at this distillery... Can't wait for the new one

A Foursquare rum you won't find like this in the ECS range. The Moscatel finish gives this a clear note of syrup, candy, and honey. What starts on the nose continues on the palate: sweet, syrupy, chocolaty, spicy, complemented by wood and roasted aromas. Not a showstopper, but solid mid-range. Something a bit different!

For a full strength relatively complex, but rather on the slightly bitter side. Especially in the finish, slight bitter notes, not so fruity, rather woody. I like it very much!

I'm now curious about this sample at the almost end of the ECS series. The color is a bright amber leaning towards brown. Looks good. The nose impression is OK. Spiciness, wood, and already a certain sweetness here. No surprises there. On the palate, thanks to the Moscatel finish, it's incredibly pleasing. You can pour it into a glass and just take a sip every now and then. Aromatically, caramel stands out, the sweetness from the Moscatel, and woody spiciness come through. You get an almost syrupy impression in the mouth. For me, the sweetness is still OK, which together with the well-integrated ABV results in drinkability. But I can totally understand if some find it too much. The finish is medium-length on the spicy-sweet notes and ends sweet-bitter, where the bitter part, in my view, rather counterbalances the sweetness and I don't see it negatively. ECS mid-field.

Amazing nose, But too old - coconut disappeared and the cask is too written in the rum - it starts to be sour because of cosk taste

Tasting together with F. Kraemmer. D D24.07.2026 Nose on an adventure👃: I sense clear banana, pear and apple. There are definitely fine scents of a bit of sulfur, tannin, green grapes and generally a nice feeling of a sweet white wine! Tongue on an adventure 🥃: I taste a rich and oily rum that is lightly spiced, there is plum and orange peel. There is a pleasant sweetness and subtle undertones of tannin. The tail of the story💫: Long finish with the taste of lightly burnt barrel and dark chocolate with orange peel!

Exciting nose dominated by the Moscatel cask with dried fruits and a medicinal-herbal aroma. On the palate, it’s clearly closer to the classic Foursquare profile, the alcohol shows its strength, and the barrel aging with former sweet wine brings a harmonious balance. Pleasant, but not a top-tier Foursquare for me.
Review by Schnubbii
Pleasant Foursquare with the usual quality, no surprises. I find something like a slight sulfur note, so for me not really a highlight.
Review by Banana Joe
Usual Foursquare quality, but for me a touch too bitter on the palate and finish. Sample is OK, I don't need a bottle here.
Review by Vinouzokis
A bit of a woody rum. Nice, but you do have to get used to it a bit. I find the finish a bit short.

Sitting in my home office on a Friday evening trying to finish some work before the weekend commences. Popped this one open to try it out. Definitely getting some dark chocolate and some citrus on the palate, not sure if I’m getting oranges but that seems to be a flavor working it’s self in. Will update some more later. Update: Nose Orange peel and dark chocolate. There is some oak but I think the citrus over powers it. Palate Usual caramel, vanilla and oak notes. There’s some banana I think, and a bitter chocolate, with hints sweetness from the Zinfandel cask all of which balance it out. Finish Warm and gradual long finish with orange peel and nutmeg.

adding something without taking over. It feels like one of those bottles that’ll just quietly grow on you the more time you spend with it. I will be ordering a bottle (or two) in due course without doubt!
