Hampden Single Cask (Astor Select) HGML 2017

Everyone who's tried this lands in the same camp — if you already chase high-ester Jamaicans, they call it superb; if you don't, it's a wall. Overripe pineapple, mango and passion fruit pile up next to nail polish, glue and a strange savory, meaty streak. At 73.4% the heat is real, but tasters say it's well integrated. Dry, funky, long. Not a first Jamaican.

9,3:On the nose, medicinal with esters, nail polish, glue, iodine, funky, fermented, overripe tropical fruits like pineapple, banana, passion fruit, mango, maracuja and kiwi hints, vegetal molasses with briny olive, roasted wood notes like pastry, burnt sugar, marzipan, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, guava, citrus and red fruits arise, slightly astringent, rum is intense, high ABV perfectly integrated, molasses is candied, floral, wood notes spicy with allspice, caramelized, metallic patina joins, some rubber. 9,2:On the palate the attack is intense, slightly bitter, funky with medicinal notes like esters, glue and nail polish, extremely fruity with fermented, overripe tropical fruits like banana, pineapple, mango, maracuja, passion fruit, strong guava, kater citrus and red fruits, papaya, as molasses is vegetal with briny olive, grassy, sweet with honeycomb and wood is roasted with marzipan, nuts, brown sugar, spicy with allspice, ginger, dry. 9:The finish is long, dry&tannic, medicinal, slightly chemical with phenol, fruity with banana, pineapple, mango, guava, mirabelle plum and citrus fruits, molasses is vegetal, sweet with honey, as oak smoky, meaty, brings caramelized tones.

Blind, I would definitely have guessed a TECA. The aroma profile is just extremely meaty from nose to finish. The variety of tropical fruit aromas is definitely unmatched; accompanied by well-integrated esters, a bit of nail polish, and subtle wood notes. On the palate, it's quite dry, which intensifies in the finish.

Poured from a sample. Simply put, this is an excellent rum. A stunning degree of balance with the over-ripened tropical fruits, powerful estery funk, and tropical maturation. There's this unusual savory component that presents as roasted oak on the nose, then turns into savory and decadent meatyness on the palate, along with everything else. Finish is long and very dense with shifting notes. This is not for the faint of hearts, but those who do enjoy these types of rums should find it brilliant.
