A first-class Agricole where the vegetal/earthy aromas dominate alongside the sugarcane. Fruity notes like citrus and sour cherry stay discreetly in the background, as do various spices. The alcohol is perfectly integrated!

Once again, big props to Stefan, you really showed a good touch here. Both the delicate nose and the palate convinced me with this Montebello, even though I'm not the biggest fan of this style.

Very very nice and round 2008 Montebello! Great nose of honey-glazed citrus fruits, cherries and more, and spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. Definitely recognizable as an Agricole but very smooth. On the palate, a bit earthier than expected but overall very elegant and round without feeling thin. Definitely one of the best single cask Montebellos I've had in the glass so far. Crazy that only 81 bottles came out of this single cask – there must have been a lot of interaction in the barrel. You really have to be into the earthy profile, but all in all, a very round Agricole!

German Rum Festival 2026 review and the last tasting from sunday, so maybe not the most accurate review from me. On the nose: Light grassy notes. Citrus notes. Mineral. Sugarcane notes. Light tea notes. Good balance between the notes Taste: Light sugarcane notes. Olive notes as main notes. Light salty notes. Good integration of alcohol. Balanced Finish: Sugarcane notes. Herbal notes. Light olive notes. Light citrus notes. Dry and slightly bitter. Good balanced rhum and could work as a gateway rhum for those that dont like agricole rhums, because the grassy note were not that present.

Lots of plum sorbet on the nose, along with spicy notes of nutmeg blossom, sugarcane, vanilla, and burnt sugar. Fresh-woody and at the same time composed, slightly earthy, maybe with a hint of plastic. Overall very inviting. On the palate clearly Agricole: buttery, grassy, fresh-woody and at the same time dark-crisp. Surprisingly complex for 48.5%. The drinking strength fits very well. Despite the moderate ABV, a lot of depth and smoothness comes through. Very elegant and for me a strong example of French Rhum. On the finish yellow fruits, some perfume and pipe tobacco. Overall it feels like a Rhum with seniority and character. For my taste the wood influence in the bouquet is a bit too strong, but it dissipates again on the finish. Maybe one or two years too much cask time, still a beautiful bottling.

A very impressive Agricole from Guadeloupe! If you like the vegetal woody Agricole profile, this Montebello adds another level of elegance. On the nose I have citrus fruits, vegetal notes, tea, sugarcane, honey, cinnamon, spices and caramel, before it goes into a musty direction with some cherry. On the palate, the unmistakable Agricole profile awaits. Vegetal sugarcane, honey, tea, earthy tones, spices, wood and roasted aromas lead over to dark berries, cherry wood and some grass. The medium-long finish offers a very similar spectrum as the palate and is characterized by nice barrel notes and some coniferous wood. For Agricole fans a real palate caresser. I am positively surprised. Wonderful Agricole, but for a top rating it simply lacks that special spark or complexity. Overall very smooth, alcohol well integrated, nice balance of the typical Agricole notes without too much grassy notes, slight bitterness, wood, peach, cherry.

Nice rum with a vegetal-green character. Great residual sweetness, the cask balances the distillate between cane and honey notes, wood, fresh grass, tea, nutmeg, a hint of vanilla, and a subtle cherry note. A very smooth rum with a light but aromatically complex profile. I like it a lot.

Did not quite make it to 9+ for me. Still very interesting. The Agricole notes are clearly in the foreground both on the nose and on the palate. The alcohol is well integrated. A bit of citrus fruit and slightly bitter and woody on the finish.

Just the nose reveals that this is a matured Agricole. Beautiful pastry notes. On the palate, a wonderful, very elegant matured Agricole unfolds at perfect drinking strength. Everything is very harmonious, the pastry aromas, but also the slightly grassy aromas in the background. Just the right amount of wood. For my taste, this is really a great bottling that Stefan has brought to the people again. Unfortunately, it's above my budget or not quite my type at that price.

A very nice, unpretentious Agricole rum that doesn't overwhelm but convinces relatively gently with its aromas. At first, fruit and spice on the nose, light freshness but not yet the grassy sugarcane note. On the tongue and palate, then grassy, vegetal influences with fruity wood notes and a soft finish with slightly bitter, astringent impressions of black tea. Overall a great rum with fairly mild 48%, yet it still brings a lot to the table.

Today a little Agricole cross-tasting: A rum I would classify as "interesting," meaning I appreciate its unique character but don't really like it. The earthy, vegetal notes with tea and herbs are surprising, but in the nose there is a note I can't quite place, and I find it very unpleasant.

I had quite high expectations on this rhum. 2008 Montebello is more than 16yo, and we know the ageing in Montebello containers chai is really aggressive, despite that the rum is quite fresh and lively. Not that this is like an unaged rum, but I expected far more cask influence. Overall, a good rum anyway, Just feels a little younger than the age statement suggests. Herbal, spicy and almost earthy, with bright sugarcane notes and a menthol hint on the palate

Nose of cooked cane, candied orange, various citrus fruits, cherry, and a floral side. Palate of fine elegance. The previous elements are still present. Also an earthy side. Medium-long finish. A good rum, but not my style. Fans of agricoles will be delighted.

First of all, I'm not the biggest fan of aged rums made from cane juice. Still, here's a good example that still shows its grassy notes. Very metallic, I also find a hint of gummy bears. Alcohol well integrated.

Read full review ›Lovers of the stronger and more rustic side of Guadeloupe get a characterful old Agricole with excellently integrated alcohol and an unusual profile, but not as demanding as many other old Agricoles. Despite the very long tropical aging and pronounced wood aromas, the Montebello is surprisingly well-balanced and not too challenging. Clear fresh cane and excessive fruity aromas are not found in this rum, but I didn't expect that at this age either. A rum that very likely pairs perfectly with a cigar and, due to its aging and limited availability, is a small rarity.
