Fun to be the first one to review a rum! This rum is bottled exclusively for the Swedish market through the Swedish spirits importer Symposion AB. This specific bottling was made from molasses using a column still, which is a bit of a disappointment given that Saint Aubin are known for their pot stilled cane juice distillates. This rum is thus deviating from the typical Saint Aubin profile, and I'm not sure it's a good representative of the distillery DNA. It has been aged in an ex-bourbon cask for 9 years (50% tropical), and the bourbon influence is very prominent. The base distillate has a dry and slightly acidic-driven profile with some typical Mauritian notes. On the nose, I get oranges and yellow fruits, mainly peaches. Along with this, vanilla, subtle oak and buttery influences from the bourbon cask. Alcohol is quite present. There is also an interesting herbal side to it. Is it rosemary I'm smelling? Thyme? A hint of mint in there as well. On the palate, the rum lean towards the dry and acidic spectrum, with flavors of canned peaches, mirabelle plums and other yellow fruits. There is also a creamy side to the palate, where vanilla, custard and oak balances out the acidity quite nicely. You can also sense these hard-to-define herbs on the palate. The finish is semi-dry and leaves you with astringent notes of yellow fruit acidity, bitter oak, herbs (thyme this time!), mint and also a round vanilla/bourbon aftertaste to counterpoint the acidity. To me, it is too much of a "generic bourbon-driven column still molasses rum" akin to South American/Spanish style rums. However, it does have some Mauritian terroir in there (peach, orange, herbs, mint), making it a notch more interesting. With all this being said, even though the rum is quite enjoyable, I don't think the quality of the rum reflects the launch price of 90EUR though. You find way better Mauritian rums for the same price, or even less. PS. Not a fan of the new CDI bottle design. It feels cheap and mass-marketed 🥲
