Blind, it could probably have been a 05 or 09 NY as well, since basically all the markers can be tasted. What is supposedly the effect of the Madeira cask fits quite well, although this rum alone, due to the lack of flavor intensity combined with noticeable alcohol, can't keep up with the top NYs.

This New Yarmoouth is just not my thing… once again, the finish overwhelms the actual character of the rum. On top of that, the alcohol, despite the reduction, is poorly integrated. A shame ☹️

I was initially skeptical about the Madeira finish, wondering if it would fit well or overpower the rum. However, surprisingly, it fits very well and complements the profile harmoniously. The typical funky cookie dough aroma of New Yarmouth is clearly recognizable, but it's enhanced by some dried apricots, rum-soaked raisins, and a subtle acidity. At over €200, it's a bit pricey, but all in all, a surprisingly successful 2008 NY, of which there have been rather few so far. I find it very, very smooth and easy to drink, with the alcohol really well integrated! A very nice release from Bristol!

Excellent drop! Smells like a fresh New Yarmouth without the sharp edges. Slightly alcoholic smell at first, milder after breathing, but you still shouldn't stick your nose too deep into the glass. On the palate, mild sweetness with unobtrusive funk. The first sip is bold, then it becomes milder. Fortunately, the Madeira influence doesn't dominate as much as I expected after it aged three years in such a cask. Still clearly recognizable as New Yarmouth. Somewhere in the middle between freshness and wildness, but with a light body, between Whisky Jury (RX26043) and the bold, settled 1994!

So I calmly tasted another New Yarmouth that I didn't know. It's a relatively new release, but right from the start, I have to say I don't think it quite succeeded. Jendá seo Bristol Classic Rum – New Yarmouth 2008 Madeira Wood Finish Single cask from Jamaican New Yarmouth, distilled on a pot still in 2008 and bottled at 57.4%. On paper, a sixteen-year-old rum, without coloring and without chill filtration. The nose starts exactly how we like Jamaica. Classic funk, overripe tropical fruit, a bit of glue and solvent, marzipan. The aroma is probably the best part of the whole tasting, although in maturity it reminds me more of a four- to six-year-old rum than a sixteen-year-old. On the palate, alongside tropical fruit, spices, and lightly bready notes, Madeira shows up more distinctly. It brings a wine-like sweet-sour, actually more sour line, which doesn’t really work with the New Yarmouth profile for me. Instead of rounding out the rum and adding depth, it somewhat scatters it and overpowers what I enjoyed in the nose. Looking at the aging, the younger expression makes quite a bit of sense. The rum was distilled in 2008 but arrived in Britain already in 2016. So it spent about eight years in Jamaica and another eight to nine years on the continent, with roughly the last three years in a Madeira cask. The finish is fairly long and alcoholic, but that sour wine note remains. Overall, no disaster, but after a promising Jamaican start, it turns out rather average. I think Madeira takes more away than it gives here, and I definitely wouldn't guess sixteen years blind. For me, 7.5/10. The price of 225 Euros is too much for this kind of drink.

I find the nose very good. On the palate, a lot of Madeira cask influence comes through. The alcohol is not perfectly integrated. Overall, though, very good!

Actually, I quite like it, but it has a certain acidity on both the nose and palate, which probably comes from the Madeira finish. That makes this rum seem a bit too alcoholic for me. But all the typical NY markers are there. The price is too high for me, but if you can get this rum for around €100, I would buy it again. This time it was just for a good cause 🤗
