Rum tasted at the GRF in Berlin in 2026. A surprisingly rich and complex nose for a Cuban rum. With caramel and vanilla but not dominant. Dried fruits and a nice heavy woodiness, also freshness and beeswax. The first sip is very slightly diluted then the aromas rise with quite a bit of wax, wood, and dried fruits. The finish is long, very well-balanced, and the caramelized dried fruits linger for a long time.

#7228 29.08.2026 VIP tasting at the German Rum Festival 2026. A very good and warm profile and the price tag is pretty OK for such an old rum. My quick notes while tasting. Caramel, spice, polish, dried fruit, orange, peppery, warm, spicy, chocolate, leather, roasted wood, coffee.

Addendum from GRF 2026 in Berlin. At the first tasting, I didn't find it that bad, even though it's a Cuban. Unfortunately, skyfly pulled the new Cuban from Distilia out of the hat, so my new benchmark has unfortunately been adjusted downwards in comparison.

German Rum Festival 2026 review. Short festival review and i dont have any tasting experience on Cuban rums, let alone the aged, cask strenght ones. On the nose: Tannings? Wine cask notes? Dried fruit notes. Raisins. Fruity. Woody notes. Creme brulee note maybe? Taste: Plums, dried fruits, light raisins and chocolate notes. Naturally sweet. Good integration of alcohol. Finish: Warm. Tannings, dried fruits, plums, raisins, chocolate. Dry with peppery notes in the end I didnt have time to check the cask details, but for me it tasted like a wine cask influenced rum. Easy sipper and i really enjoyed this rum. Hopefully i get a chance to taste another aged, cask strenght Cuban rum someday.

Tasting note. So far, I have been consistently disappointed by Cuban rums. Wood, caramel, and chocolate dominated, usually with poorly integrated and prominent alcohol. This bottling proved me wrong and showed me that Cuba can also be awesome. PS: but it wasn't the best Cuban of the day ;)

Definitely needs its time to rest in the glass, about 30 minutes. Mature tobacco, old oak wood, and a warm sweetness of dark sugar flow through the nose. Palate: Monumental and powerful, but marked by effortless finesse. Dry, complex, and strong in the style of Don Pancho. Finish: Extremely long-lasting, warming, with lingering notes of wood and tobacco. Conclusion: A liquid testament to Cuban tradition and patience – timeless elegance in the glass. A really delicious rum with very well integrated alcohol. Unfortunately expensive for a daily sipper but given the age the price is fair. Many thanks for the sample.

Wow. A great Cuban I have in the glass. First impression: an absolutely round and complex rum. There’s so much to discover. Dried fruits, wood, and a warm profile greet me. Chocolate and a subtle sweetness as well. The alcohol is perfectly integrated and it’s super smooth.

GRF 2026 VIP Tasting. First off - best Cuban I've had in the glass so far. Finally one with more power without tasting alcoholic. Brown-red color. On the nose a soft and mild basic impression, yet quite intense aromatics. Distinctive spice I had to get used to first. On the palate even more intense spicy aromatics, wood, leather, polish and chocolate. The finish long on the spicy wood notes. This bottling with a solid 57.4% has something.

Best rum I've tried – glad I had the opportunity to taste this at the German Rum Festival. Alcohol is well integrated, and the rum is almost older than I am! 😄 Definitely has a sweeter profile, with caramel/chocolate notes and hint of dried fruit. Barrel is present, but not overwhelming. Very smooth, definitely a 9+ for me.

On the nose, this rum presents sweet notes of crème brûlée and freshly pressed sugarcane juice, with deep woody nuances reminiscent of fine wood polish and a typical Guyana touch. On the palate, it initially shows a lively sparkle. Alongside old wood and a subtle buttery acidity, rich caramel and recurring crème brûlée aromas unfold. Accompanied by light bitter notes, a hint of noble rancio flashes through. The finish is harmonious but unfortunately bids farewell too quickly.

An insane Cuban. Dirk Becker has managed an amazing bottling here. For its age and long tropical maturation, it is very balanced and harmonious. On the nose, slightly woody and a bit aggressive at first, but after about 15-20 minutes it becomes very smooth. On the palate and finish, very balanced and harmonious, and it lingers long and pleasantly.

Amazing Cuban! Incredibly complex, very rich and round already on the nose, lots of power. On the palate surprisingly soft, not too woody, slight sweetness of dried fruits, plus dark aromas of chocolate and coffee. Don Pancho Origenes 30 YO in Cuban style and clearly more power and complexity.

What a beast. According to the forecast, the rum matches 94%. And really. What a dream. What Dirk Becker has uncovered there is a masterpiece. A drink for special occasions. I don't regret the 300,-€. For me, it's on the same level as Albion, Enmore, or Skeldon. I bow down.

Cocoa, fruity sweetness, plums, barrel, old wood, banana, caramel, grapes, soft bitterness, soft tannins. The alcohol is beautifully integrated, the rum is light, pleasant and wonderfully drinkable. A beautiful experience of drinking rum history.

Many similarities with the Cuba 1968 from The Whisky Agency: ripe spice, wood, dried fruits, and good complexity. The alcohol is a bit more present but not disturbing. The wood is clearly noticeable but does not dominate. Palate: noticeably more intense and oily than the 56-year-old comparison rum. Ripe plum, dark dried fruits, oak, and a hint of coconut meet little caramel and a heavy, very well-integrated sweetness. At 57.4%, it brings significantly more punch but remains overall very balanced. Finish: long, warm, and complex. Oak, dried fruits, plum, and a nice menthol note linger for a very long time. Exactly the length I felt was somewhat missing in the Cuba 1968. Conclusion: The more intense, longer, and more powerful of the two old Cubans. If you’re looking for maximum balance and an exceptionally relaxed, complex easy sipper, go for the TWA 1968; if you want more volume, strength, and a long aftertaste, the Rumclub Edition 66 is the right choice. Still very interesting at the current price, although the limited edition of 228 bottles probably won’t keep prices at this level for long. 9/10.

A typical Spanish style rum but in "very old". It's amazing how intense the rum smells at first of caramel, toffee, dried fruit and only a little wood and leather. You don't smell the alcohol at first at all. If you let it sit a bit, the sharp alcohol evaporates and you smell it slightly. The taste is the opposite, at first the alcohol is a bit sharp. If you wait a bit and let it breathe, the picture is much more harmonious. In taste, the tannins come through much stronger than in the smell, but do not overpower the original character of the distillate. The longer you leave it open in the glass, the more intense/varied the taste becomes. The finish is long, I still have an aftertaste after 60 minutes. It has a very typical aftertaste that you otherwise only find in fresh white Agricole rums or Cachaca, not grassy or floral. I know the taste, can't exactly place it but the first thing that comes to mind are cooked celery pieces in stew.

Read full review ›A lot of money for a rum, that must be mentioned, but it will be difficult – almost impossible – to get a comparable product. The quality doesn’t need a second of discussion. The rum is complex and noble. However, it’s not a loudmouth but a very fine rum that needs time to unfold.
