Dark dried fruit, orange peel and caramel sit on top of old wood, tobacco and leather — 50 years in the cask left deep marks. One taster calls it "top tier Cuban," and the Cuba-skeptics here agree, several ranking it as their new high-water mark for the island. Here’s a little feedback from me again. For me, as someone who’s not a fan of Cuban rums, this is my new benchmark. I found almost all Cuban rums okay so far, except for a few, but this one is a total standout on the upside. For me, this one plays in a different league.

Tasting note. Until yesterday, I hadn’t had a really good Cuban in my glass. The GRF proved me wrong. The 88 from RumClub was already awesome, but this one sets a benchmark! Absolutely top class!

A very, very unusual Cuban. While the usual markers like nuts, vanilla, cocoa, and especially tobacco are definitely present, they are accompanied by an unusual spiciness and fruitiness. On the nose, especially orange peel, as well as plum and a bit of fig; on the palate, surprisingly smoky. Immediate associations with black Nepalese cardamom – if you know that smokiness, the similarity is unmistakable. Along with that, some creamy butter caramel, dried apricot, dark chocolate, and a bit of salty umami miso paste. Super wild – but nothing I personally would need a bottle of per se. Either way, a fantastic Cuban that stands out from the crowd. The alcohol is incredibly well integrated, and the mouthfeel is super pleasant! Thanks @skyFly!

This is a very outstanding Cuban rum that has a lot of complexity and an incredibly delicate harmony. The nose is balanced, fruity, and spicy. The scent of caramel hints at a creamy texture. Wood, nuts, burnt sugar, dried fruits, raisins, coffee, and other dark aromas blend wonderfully in balance with vanilla, plums, and tobacco. On the palate, a pleasant sweetness comes through. The 54% ABV is exceptionally well integrated. Spices, vanilla, dried fruits, chocolate, wood, and caramelized nuts lead into cardamom, burnt sugar, clove, and coffee. The long and equally complex finish is characterized by a beautiful interplay of dark chocolate, spices, tobacco, orange peel, oak, brown caramel, and nuts. This Cuban is truly in a class of its own. This could have been a really good old Cuban... If it weren’t for that really persistent whisky vibe, especially in the finish — unfortunately, that ruins a very high rating. At least, besides the 1988 Cuban from Spirit of Rum (Rumclub), it’s the only post-revolution Cuban that doesn’t fall apart quickly in the glass and then just leave a sticky, artificial sweetness on the nose.

For me, a real highlight at the GRF. Okay, Cuban rums are definitely my thing, and this one tops quite a few. Very pleasantly balanced with fruit and a light sweetness, plus dark chocolate and a bit of nuttiness. The finish is then extremely long-lasting.

Expectations were high... Cuba is actually not really my thing except in cola 🫣😅. Nose is very restrained: vanilla, marzipan, apricot, brown sugar, and fine wood. On the palate... Heavy oily consistency... Nice sweetness: vanilla, marzipan, apricot... Alcohol well integrated. Great Cuban, but it’s not a revelation either; I miss complexity, especially considering the age and price.

At the GRF2026, I had the chance to try this quite extraordinary bottling: distilled in 1973, bottled in 2024, and 50 years old. An impressively mature, elegant rum where five decades of barrel aging have left clear marks. Dark dried fruits, orange peel, and caramel blend with old wood, tobacco, leather, and fine spices. On the palate, complex, dry, and concentrated, with balsamic and slightly bitter notes. The finish is exceptionally long, warm, and increasingly woody-spicy. A rum to discover slowly. Thanks a lot for letting me taste it.

Franconian Tasting Gang October 2026: My best Cuban so far, an absolute reference. Despite the high age, not too oaky and unlike the Cuban rums I've tasted before, finally one with enough power. Interesting: the freshly emptied glass gave off a somehow cheesy smell after a few minutes.

Compared to the 38-year-old from Rum Depot, no quantum leap. Also a nice old mild Cuban with chocolate and coffee. You really have to want to treat yourself to a bottle like this. I certainly don't regret it. Just right for the upcoming season.
