The thing that catches everyone off guard is the cherry — intense cherry-yogurt with marzipan, the kind of note more than one taster compared to a liquid Mon Chéri. Underneath sits dry vanilla, toffee, dried fig and a spicy, waxy oak that stays elegant at 58%. A closed Guadeloupe distillery, 35 years old. Part of the rum Olympus. You should have had it in your glass once - or as often as you can. Independent, unique and not just a world of its own in terms of taste. Impressive!

For me Courcelles is an extraordinary profile. Yes, quite soft and harmonious, but way too artificial aromas, in the nose and on the palate they give a perfumed impression. Extremely much vanilla, lots of fruit, a present sweetness - is that still natural? Where do these sweet notes come from? Compared to similarly aged rums, the woody, bitter (typical for oak) aroma is missing. So I'm skeptical here...

Tasting it at the 11th GRF and then having 5 cl bottled as a sample was a MUST. When do you ever have something like this in a glass? Nectar of the gods. 😋😋😋 Update 2024-12-30: Many thanks to @Lukas for the sample. Even if the printed year on the label is not quite right - today, on this special day for me, the alcohol content is the more important and absolutely accurate number for me. 😉 The original rating remains the same, of course. 😍

WOW... I've never had a rum like this in my glass... liquid Yoghurette in rum! Unique, with a present but very well integrated spicy wood note on the palate... An absolute pleasure

Blind Community Tasting Courcelles 1972 by Jakob Something freshly fermented - as with red natural wine - joins the red fruit notes. Otherwise lots of typical caramel, vanilla, honey. Delicious. Very tasty.

Mmmhhh a really delicious drop. I smell strawberries, mango, pineapple...milk chocolate, lavender and floral notes. Heavenly nose On the palate Nice and oily in the mouth... unbelievably great attack ...fills the mouth completely with strawberry compote, mango and chocolate mixed with yoghurt Insanely delicious. RumX Community Tasting - Domaine de Courcelles (thanks to Jakob) Four bottlings in blind tasting, 2008, 2014 and 2022 from Rhum House and 2005 from Velier. We were quite unanimous about the winner of the evening, and how could it be otherwise, it was the not exactly cheap Velier bottling (fruity, floral, sweet). Then for me Rhum House 2014 (similar profile, more cherry than peach), closely followed by 2008 (very similar to 2014) and finally 2022 (less fruity in comparison, more spicy, slightly more alcoholic). But all are very close together, sometimes more and sometimes less notes of cherry and peach (iced tea), honey or honeycomb and lots of vanilla. Very good stuff.

A small highlight. Distilled in the year the distillery closed and matured for 35 years. My only rum from the Domaine de Courcelles to date. Nose: I've never had such an aroma in my glass before. Intense cherry yoghurt with marzipan. Behind it, fine lavender honey and generally very floral, almost a little perfume-like. Lots of dry vanilla is added and it becomes waxy and spicy at the back. Elegant and beautiful. 89 Palate: very elegant, concentrated and intense. Bitter-woody without being really bitter. Very spicy with vanilla, licorice and also umami. Fat pecan nut. Also sweet and fruity, again with cherry but also with dried blood orange, dried date and dried fig. In addition to all the rather muted notes, it has something fresh and herbal with camomile. A little grass and saffron are also added at the end. Very nice taste experience. 91 A rum that shows its age in its balance and complexity. Woody in the smallest white, great, unusual aromas. A rare beauty, that's for sure.

This is another older tasting and I do have an even older one on my shelf equally good. The nose has spices and cherry with toffee, wood and herbal notes as well as light chocolate. The chocolate is more obvious in the empty glass after an hour or so. The palate is well balanced, sweet and fruity with spices, wood, toffee and a light nutty note. The finish is medium long and sweet with dried fruit and wood. The bottle is not cheap but we'll worth the money.

Wow, this is a magnificent rum that lives up to all expectations: fruit, freshness, deliciousness, balance, complexity... Certainly one of the best rums I've ever drunk. And the more it opens up, the more it has to offer. A superb experience. Too bad it's limited to 2cl...

Number four. Similar to numbers 2 and 3, the nose has wood, chocolate, and toffee. The palate is much smoother than 2 and 3, creamier and more drinkable. The finish is not quite as long as number 3. The alcohol is very well integrated.
