After two 2007 Clarendons, I jump 11 years into the past. For the 2007s, I wrote that lovage-mint-wood is the typical Clarendon profile. Here, lovage hits so strongly at first impression that the Maggi note in the mouth was almost unpleasant at first. But this rum brings exactly the depth and maturity that I missed in both 2007s. Wood, cinnamon, allspice – a completely different world of aromas. Menthol comes right after, and then unfortunately nothing at first. Ripe papaya and passion fruit eventually show up. I like the nose, but not the density and complexity of the 95 and 97. The palate is really exciting; it’s like a kind of papaya Thai salad or a similar dish of vegetables and fruit, again with menthol and a really Maggi-like lovage as a fish sauce substitute. Plus the acidity often found in Clarendon, which is unfortunately a bit sharp. Wood brings tannins, mild bitterness, and depth. The finish might be the highlight: mango, lemon peel, coffee – sounds a bit wild but tastes like a craft cola. This is a really, really good Clarendon, which with its woody and spicy side brings exactly the depth that the 2007s lack. A bit much in all three Clarendons tonight is the menthol, which I think I used to like better.

Fits wonderfully into the long list of great Clarendons from the 90s. Tends to be more similar to the 97 vintage than the 95, with more furniture polish and less menthol. Awesome stuff!

For the first tasting, I was surprised by a taste at the finish that was between bitter and harsh, given by the cask. It bothered me a bit. However, over tastings spaced a few weeks apart, it loses that taste that bothered me (a bit) and becomes very good! For this rum, it seems quite complicated to rate it with only a sample, without taking into account the evolution of the rum once the bottle is opened.
