Abuelo 7 Años
People new to rum, or anyone who wants an easy Panama pour for cola, tend to like this one. Expect toffee, vanilla and caramel with a smoky, woody edge that's typical of Panama. It leans sweet but not cloying, and the alcohol can read a touch sharp neat. The finish is short — plenty of people call it a "great rum for the price."

I really like this Rum in Cocktails. It has a prominent somky/roasted smell and taste that is very typical of Panama Rum. Considering how cheap it is (I paid 18€), it's surprisingly good for sipping, too.

6,8:On the nose, we find a vegetal aspect reminiscent of pipe tobacco, perhaps a bit resinous, roasted.Typical notes of molasses and caramel follow, might be with orange peel. The nose is light and mild. It evolves into a touch of burnt/smoked wood, which develops vanilla notes, followed by a hint of leather, mint after a little rest. 7,2:On the palate it is very silky, even creamy and sweet with bourbon fruity notes, some tropical, charred wood, dry, a bit smoky, better than Havana club 7.We could taste butterscotch melting, caramel, a bit spicy. Some metallic notes crawl in with resting the rum, perhaps also tannins. 7:The finish is thick, honeyed, dry and woody. The caramel is still there, with a hint of licorice and some smoke, as the wood is charred and citrusy or tanninic...

Sweet rum that I'd use in a mixer 😊
Review by Gregor
Slightly sweet, toffee and caramel. Unfortunately very short and flat. There is also a little smoke. However, the tones come entirely from the wooden casks and the distillate doesn't bring anything in at all

Solid mixing rum and great starter. Much better than Havana 7 etc
Review by Alvaro Mateos
The alcohol taste is palpable from the first sip. In my opinion, it’s not worth the price.

Good value rum and not too sweet for Panama rum either!!!

Very good run for little money. Unfortunately, still too much sugar. Smell intense vanilla.

Wood on the nose. In the taste it has more cocoa.
Review by Jakob Deiner
Classic rather restrained vanilla, caramel and wood notes on the nose. On the palate, after the initial sweetness, surprisingly spicy, vanilla, caramel, tobacco leading to peppery and peppery sharpness on the finish. I clearly like it better than the (to me too) smoky Abuelo 12 - I definitely have to compare it with the Havana 7, could become a serious premium mixer alternative. Drinks: - Neat: 4/5 - Rum Cola: 4.5/5

Day 1 in calendar 2025 from Mac Y. Tastes mostly of barrel and not much else. Short taste. The empty glass has a nice smell of smoke.
Review by Bernd van Brakel
Decent dark rum. That does not stick around long but can be a bit sharp
Review by Matt
This is a very approachable rum, a little on the sweeter side but not overly sweet. It makes for a great starter rum that most people will enjoy. You can drink it neat, but it feels less like a dedicated sipper and more suited to simple cocktails like a Planter’s Punch, a Daiquiri, or even a Mojito, especially if you use an aged rum in the Mojito. It offers plenty of sweet notes such as toffee, caramel, and general richness, but it’s not overly complex. The flavor is straightforward, without the funkiness of a Jamaican or heavy richness you might find in many Demerara rums. It sits nicely in between sweeter aged rums and the more medical rums, making it a solid choice for those who want something pleasant without being overpowering. Overall, it’s a great rum for the price, and very affordable for the quality it delivers.

The Abuelo 7 is a pleasantly straightforward Panama rum: vanilla, caramel, and coconut meet raisins, dates, and a bit of roasted nuts. On the palate, it's soft and round with subtle fruity sweetness, some wood, and a fine spiciness. What I especially like is its unpretentious nature – not a spectacular aroma giant, but an honest, cozy sipper that brings surprisingly much enjoyment to the glass.
Review by Mateusz
This abuelo is made from sugar cane, but the grassiness is not strongly noticeable. It has nice balance of freshness and barrel aging. Really good value for money. Recommended!
Review by Matej
Pretty average rum. Aroma is sweet, woody but there is unpleasant scent of alcohol (at first). I let it rest and aroma itself was much more pleasant with sweet (vanilla) and spicy scents. Taste of this rum is similar to aroma. Lots of vanilla and spice. What I really like is that smoky and woody flavors. Finish is unfortunately short and does not offers nothing else that I mentioned earlier. For that price really nice bottle of rum. In my opinion Abuelo Two Oaks is much much better.
Review by Claes Nilsson
Tested it at the same time as the Two Oak and therefore it was a little flat, both in the nose and in the mouth. Too short finnish for me
Review by MJ72
Very pleasant in smell, raisins, some wood. Pleasantly sweet on the palate with fruit and some barrel. Shorter finish, pleasant
Review by StormAK
Too bad it's column still. The barrel is good, but the rum lacks brightness for me. Quite straightforward and at the same time closed aroma.
Review by Oliver Busse
Rum in the lower price range, pure or for mixing!! Pleasant sweetness, alcohol not too dominant!! Clear recommendation!!
Review by Rokndady
Great rum for the price. Was pleasantly surprised.

Drier but very well balanced rum. Nose steady, taste pleasant.

Woody, cinnamon bark, toffee
Review by Richard Krupa
I didn't expect much from it and I didn't get it either. Don't take it.
Review by Motte
A bit boring and one-dimensional as a sipper. The alcohol could be better integrated, it tastes surprisingly sharp. For me, a rum for cocktails.
