A thoroughly well-balanced Caroni where nothing is missing: dirty aromas, various (mostly tropical) fruits, menthol, and molasses syrup come together to form a brilliant composition. Some might find it a bit sharp-edged; for me, that just comes with this ABV and a Caroni! PS: basically, the rum isn't usually this cloudy. But during sampling, the whole batch got stirred up.

Small side by side of four 1999 Caronis with Weiron, The first cask and 2x Distilia. The Weiron is enjoyable but suffers from its lower ABV not delivering comparable intensity and lacks complexity. Yet a nice easy experience. The other contenders are more on a level playing field. The last cask is rather restrained on the nose while delivering nicely on the palate. Quite some dirt with a creamy mozzarella and astringent finish. Nice Caroni profile. The two Distilia bottlings take the 1999 even a bit further. Both also deliver on the nose with dirt and some tropical fruits. For the younger there are additional toasted notes and dark chocolate on the plate, while the 25y bottling brings intensity, dirt and some fruits in a very nicely balanced package. This one is particularly nice and takes the crown of the vintage so far.

A 25-year-old Caroni with a powerful 68% ABV. The color is a nice orange-brown with very slight veils. Right after pouring, the nose is immediately Caroni. Tar, rubber, workshop. Then oak backed by a minty freshness. Over time, more spicy and roasted nuances appear. It becomes more layered and complex. On the palate, alongside the workshop aromas, there’s a sweet influence that wasn’t noticeable on the nose. The 68% is well integrated but also unmistakable. Woodier, spicier with aromas of leather and coffee. Plus light dried fruits. The long finish is primarily on the dark spicy aromas, accompanied by a subtle sweetness and a very slight delicate bitterness. If you like dark aromatics, you’ll like this bottling. Fruit hunters will have to look elsewhere. For me, this is a rum to ponder by an open fireplace. Bravo.

A somewhat atypical Caroni! On the nose, peach, caramel, very discreet dirty Caroni notes. On the palate, still fruits like peach, wood, cola, tar, now more Caroni notes, but overall quite rounded. The incredible 68% ABV is surprisingly well integrated! If you're looking for a Caroni bomb, this isn't it. But if you want a more rounded Caroni, this one will satisfy you!

Something completely new for me, I haven't had this tar smell before. I really like it. Very well integrated alcohol. A hint of mint, tar, and tropical fruits. I'm impressed.
