A formidable rum of complexity for its young age. We find in the nose the classic notes of the Jamaican funk with the very ripe tropical fruits, the citrus fruits, the phenolic notes with the esters, the solvents and the glue, but also woody and spicy notes which decorate the whole. In mouth, it is a real festival of fruits so much they invest the palate. Then come the phenolic notes, the floral notes then the spices and the wood. It is a real aromatic concentrate, with an extreme degree and surprisingly round, soft and complex. The finish is very long and persistent with a very subtle saline touch that gives depth to the mouth. A heavy rum, intense and of a rare elegance.

It was my introduction to tropical fruit ester bombs and I absolutely loved it at first sip. Actually, even at the first breath, because as soon as you open the bottle, the bouquet inevitably makes its way into the entire room. Unimaginably high quality for the issue price and, even from today's perspective, proof of what Hampden is capable of. Exceptionally good.

Bottle in CZ community advent calendar 2025 Lightly sweet hampden? I like it! ... Hampden, legendary Jamaican distillery, which besides rum also produces alcohol for perfumes. In all rums from this distillery you can smell wild esters, after which your whole body soaks in the scent of yellow tropical fruits - mango, papaya, pineapple, peach. One of the rums you "must try before you die".

Very cool HLCF ... from memory also better than the Rare Cask. Grilled pineapple, almond/marzipan, wood, spices and a nice dark sweetness with a wonderful mouthfeel. HLCF is not the greatest brand, but this rum is delicious.

Glue and alcohol on the first nose, then the other flavors emerge. Lactic, varnish, blood orange and other citrus fruits. A slightly bumpy start to the palate, then everything calms down and falls into place. Lots of fruit, and the lactic on the nose has turned into raclette cheese. The finish is long on a sort of sour milk candy and oil. Varied and surprising aromas, not to say jarring, and yet I really like this singular rum.

On the nose, it comes across strong but still comparatively mild. On the palate, the full ester bomb unfolds, where unfortunately the alcohol is also quite noticeable. Besides the intense tropical fruit notes, also some raspberry and pleasant woody notes in the finish. For 90 points and more, better integration of the alcohol is missing, which is naturally difficult with the short aging. Crazy awesome Mai Tai rum.

A direct comparison of the HLCF from Habitation Velier and from the Rare Cask series, both from 2010. The different maturation times are recognizable. For me, however, the Habitation Velier is clearly ahead. But you can't go wrong with either of them.

HLCF 2010 HV vs. Rare Cask: HV is more vibrant and intense, while the RC clearly shows the longer maturation. The RC comes with more sweetness on the nose and more wood influence on the palate, As this also somewhat tames the funkiness, on the first go the HV is slightly ahead in my book.

great, tropically matured HD! No ester circular saw, but with beautiful butter cookie notes, milk cream, toffee and tropical fruit basket. Roasty on the palate, espresso. Long finish with old wooden barrel.

Ester, varnish and traces of chemicals combined with ripe fruits, especially pineapple, citrus and other - light and yellow, I can't describe it better - fruits. Strong and yet balanced, alcohol very well integrated. On the mouth then furry and astringent. Long, warm finish. Probably the gateway to happiness for ester lovers.

A concentration of what Hampden can do. Well, the 68° are there, so it's not for everyone. But it's so good! I think there'll be something left in my palate tomorrow. Endless length. Edit: tasted it again and didn't enjoy it as much. I found a pronounced bitterness on the finish.

It’s very good, but not as good as the rare cask to me. In comparison: the alcohol is too much present and there’s a slight bitterness. It’s a beautiful beast and an absolute powerhouse. I would have probably rated it higher if I tasted it on it’s own. Nevertheless I’ve enjoyed it, duh!

Even though Hampden has even higher ester levels in its portfolio, for me the HLCF mark is one of the best to show the connoisseur what characterizes this exceptional distillery. The 68.5% is of course demanding in the mouth at first, but it is always amazing what a pleasing and creamy mouthfeel is created by the salivation that sets in. A real board of flavors, delicious!

A very nice release from Habitation Velier. The nose is classic Hampden—full of esters, banana, pineapple, glue, and overripe tropical fruits. On the palate, it delivers a burst of tropical fruits complemented by subtle wood and spice notes. The finish is long and persistent, echoing the flavors of the palate.

This is a second time around. Didn't leave a review the first time. Ripe fruit, pineapple and buttermilk on the nose. On the palate, oooh this is nice and balanced. The ripeness of fruit is matched sweetness and spiciness. You have to respect the strength but this is very nice. Moving up a point.

👃 Esters rather "soft" in the range of high esters. Nice overall balance. Overripe pineapple, small cubes of candied pineapple, light green banana, starfruit, yellow lemon. Characteristic notes of glue, almond milk, light solvents, beech smoke, quite present alcohol. With time, smell of sour cherry with chocolate. 😋 Very intense, lively, astringent, bitter and overripe fruit. Dry glue, pineapple, banana, dry and rough vanilla. As if mixing candied pineapples with sweet and sour chili sauce. ⛳ Long, warm, bitter, astringent, dry, spicy, piquant. Esters well present, very ripe pineapples, dry bitterness of bitter oranges and grapefruit, light vanilla woodiness. 💡 My sample must come from a bottle opened several years ago. The profile is very good but I find the intensity of the nose has lost its brilliance. The mouth remains lively and concentrated. The bitterness of the bitter orange remains long in the finish. 🏅 At its release, this HV was among the top of the HDs, when there were few. It's still very good, but no longer top of the head. 90 > 88+

Taste and smell same same: overripe pineapple and banana, vanilla seeds, lots of esters but not too much, brioche and cookie dough, salty honey croissant with grapefruit marmalade. Extremely awesome and dangerously drinkable! ⚡

Really great nose. Pineapple with banana with great ester. Like biting right into it. The taste is really great too, though already with quite a kick. An intense drop that is fun. Recommended. In the after-tasting it rose... Really tasty with power.

Tip top Hampden, very very round. Alcohol for 68.5% top integrated. To be honest, I like it even better with a little water, all the typical Hampden markers are found. What I particularly appreciate about the HLCF is the sour spritziness, I just find that awesome. Also really nice wood influence.

It's pure: clear on lemon, lime! I mainly drink it in ti-punch where I find it excels (even though the recipe is supposed to be with white rum). Since it's clear on lemon, you don't taste any other (parasitic) flavors. For example, I don't feel the wood, nor the 67.7% alcohol. Just a strong power on lemon, lime! If you want the strength on lemon: this is the right choice. Maybe it's gotten a bit expensive at auctions? It depends sometimes...

Color: Bright amber Aroma: Immediately intense and very fruity at the beginning, like esters. Smells of solvents, tropical fruit (passion fruit, banana), fermented fruit, apple and forest honey. Taste: Sweet in the mouth with honey. Spicy with vanilla and alcohol. Intense, alcoholic and strong when swallowed, spicy-peppery, fruity and sweet. Tastes of citrus fruits, forest honey, liquorice and toffee. Finish: Long, spicy and dry. Warms from deep inside. The aromas from the taste last a long time, especially the spiciness, esters, forest honey and toffee. Remains very pleasant and tasty. Conclusion: Very tasty rum, a clear recommendation.

This HLCF 2010/6y.o. is my absolute reference for tropically matured Hampden rums. I have had several intensive comparative sesions in which I compared the HLCF with, among others, the 10y.o. 2010 C<>H and the 9y.o. 2010 HGML from Habitation Velier (HV), as well as various continental matured Hampdens from Kill Devil, Compagnie des Indes, Nobilis and others. These other Hampdens are also top league, especially the HV C<>H and the HV HGML are absolutely fascinating with their enormously full-bodied orange fruit. But the HLCF is much more balanced, very complex and deep and not too overly funky. Still very funky, but without any tendency to off-notes. Incredible balance, depth and fruit. And also perfect for self-mixed blends with a small proportion (e.g. 20%) of higher ester Hampdens (e.g. C<>H, DOK). With the right combination, these blends can also play in this >9.0 league.
