Valdespino Legend of Cuban Rum Pre-1962 1944
Sip this neat, at room temperature — it's built for slow contemplation, not cola. Expect a sweet, oily, creamy body with dried apricot, milk chocolate, brown sugar and roasted almond, plus sherry-cask influence and a smoky, lightly tannic finish. Tasters call it "flüssige Geschichte" — liquid history from Cuba. The nose wins people over; a few feel the palate stays rounder than remarkable.

How does Valdespino Legend of Cuban Rum Pre-1962 1944 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Sweet, chocolatey old Cuban sipper Loved for its chocolatey, sherry-touched Cuban character and a gorgeous nose. Several agree the palate is softer than the age and hype promise — memorable more as history than as pure wow.

8,4:On the nose, polish and metallic patina, with sweet roasted cedar wood notes like burnt sugar, leather, roasted almonds, confectionery, buttery and spicy with baking spices, flowery molasses and citrus, dried and candied fruits, are the first thing we notice. On aeration, the burnt sugar is caramelized, roastedness brings new notes like cocoa, coffee, cola, slight smokiness, saddle, darker molasses with black tea and earthy tobacco...some tannins arise, perhaps rubber. 8,8:On the palate, the attack is sweet and creamy, very tasty and round with roasted wood notes like nougat, crème brûlée, cola, leather and dried fruits with apricots and raisins, some orange peel, as the molasses is dark with black tea, tobacco, slightly flowery. We might notice some polish and metallic patina. When the rum is well oxidized, burnt, smoky notes are noisy with coffee, roasted nuts, burnt sugar and sweet spices...From fruits, banana and prunes arise. 8,5:The finish is long, dry&tannic, slightly metallic, the fruits are dried and citrus, the wood roasted with milk chocolate, nuts, crunchy bread, burnt sugar, leather and popcorn, peppery and smoky, tobacco is also obvious.

Liquid history from Cuba. Extremely mild, balanced and yet intense. Really great nose! Beautiful chocolate and roasted aromas. Sherry and at the same time bitter and sweet - but not unpleasant. Exceptional Spanish-style rum!

I am becoming more and more a fan of side-by-side tastings of bottlings that are similar in their key data, in order to better pinpoint the characteristics of a profile, a vintage, or a distillery. Same here: tasted side-by-side with RX20869 (1973). And I have to say, the two rums don’t have much in common. The RX20869 today already tastes very much like artificial Christmas flavor (which I didn’t really notice at the time of tasting). The older Legend of Cuba, on the other hand, comes across much thinner and more boring, although somehow more "honest" Cuban. Maybe that was the preferred flavor profile of that era, but it’s not really mine. P.S.: But I now have to downgrade the RX20869 from 82 points back then to 80, because of these artificial notes I can’t rate it any better than the Legend of Cuba.

Well, a Cuban, like so many that have been coming out again recently. For the age, I would have expected a wooden bomb again, but it wasn't that bad. Nice to have tried it again, solid, but unfortunately not a unicorn either.

Very mild and creamy rum that is nevertheless very intense in taste. Wood, dried fruit and burnt sugar predominate from nose to finish. There is also some polish and roasted aromas. Alcohol barely noticeable

Probably the oldest rum I've had in a glass so far. The nose is clearly dominated by sherry, along with spices, chocolate, dried fruits, and a pleasant sweetness. On the palate, lots of sherry as well, and despite the high age, still quite a few fruity notes, wood, a slight bitterness, but also a floral/herbal touch. Nicely oily in the mouth. Delicious rum!!

A piece of rum history! It has the typicality of all Cuban rums, smooth and elegant and enveloping, with a higher intensity than others of its kind.In my opinion, however, for the price at which it is found today, it lacks aromatic complexity and power. There are many other rums less expensive than this one that have an edge!

Vanilla, wood and caramel, but here too a black powdery, sulfurous side, like a PX cask gone bad. Is it bad? Not at all, it makes this rum rather interesting, which probably didn't please the Cubans much. On the palate it's the same. The wood is more elegant and reminds of cedar used for cigar boxes. You can really feel its age. In the finish, rather long, the sulfur gradually disappears and the woody caramel remains.

Another slightly old tasting but I have more notes on it. The nose is sweet and balanced with wood and nuts and a lovely floral note. The palate is very sweet, oily and round with smoky wood, dried fruit, brown sugar and a hint of marzipan at the end. The finish is medium long with smoky wood, dried fruit and brown sugar. Pretty sweet and definitely an good rum for cakes etc.

Cuba in its purest form. Tobacco, milk chocolate, black pepper, dried apricot, cola and popcorn with stock honey. Sweet, creamy and slightly bitter astringent. Great smokiness and slight acidity on the finish. Really exciting and extraordinary!
Review by Double Barrel
Very but very delicious and all those years in a Spanish bodega didn't turn it into a sherry bomb but more likely added layers to its Guyanese profile. Understand a very chocolatey cuban rum with texture!!!
Review by Johannes
Good Spanish-style rum with distinct sherry notes. However, it lacks complexity and percentages.
Review by DosenZorn
Very pleasant rum, easy sipper, comparatively sweet both on the nose and palate. But not spirit drink candy sweetness, very pleasant. Plus a well complementary barrel influence. For the “few” 45%, a great intensity. I like it very much; but I wouldn’t buy a whole bottle.
Review by GigiMartini
A difficult rum to judge. Expectations are high, both because of the age of distillation and the price. Trying to be as objective as possible, I can say that the nose is rich and definitely pleasant, even with an empty glass. The palate holds up much less, is round, decently structured, but lacks the wow effect. More drinkable than memorable. It remains, however, an offbeat experience. Weighted rating on a nose of 85, and a palate under 80
