Licorice, black tea and burnt wood run right through this one, nose to finish — a textbook Port Mourant, dark and intense. There's spice, coffee, dried fruit and a hint of dark chocolate underneath, plus a long warming finish. The one recurring gripe: at 65% the alcohol stays a bit forward, and it leans dry and bitter. Give it 30 minutes and the fruit slowly comes forward.

It has a very similar basic profile to the two El Dorados from 97 and 99, but appears somewhat more balanced - far less acidity on the palate, but a little more wood and heavy sweetness. However, the alcohol is very present, which for me results in clear deductions. One of the weaker Velier Demeraras.

Maybe Port Mourant is not my favorite style when it comes to Demerara. Being that this is a PM, but it's in the beloved Velier Demerara collection, i had high expectations that are not being fulfilled. Typical PM, wood liquorice herbs tea and bitterness, this is, long story short, the profile. Well done and lenghty, Just alcohol not so perfectly integrated

Distinctively Port Mourant on the nose. Compared to the ED 1997 this one is more lively with more sweetness and fruits while the ED is much more wood and herbs forwards paying tribute to the longer maturation. Very enjoyable and easier to grasp on the nose for the Velier. On the palate, the Velier is nicely balanced between wood, PM herbal / liquorice notes and a vanilla sweetness. A hint of bitterness as well as dark chocolate and black tea notes. It is intense and flavorful, alcohol integration could be a bit better, however. So looking at this mini comparison: the Velier is very nice and by far better balanced and more approachable than the ED. For the later one, you have to cherish bitter and PM herbal notes very much to have a nice experience. That said, I personally prefers the much longer aged ED, even if price was not of any concern. Accounting for the current price levels I would go for 5+ bottles of the ED over the Velier any time 😁 Disclaimer: obviously it is a bit stupid to compare a 13y aged vs. a 20y aged PM from different vintages… given the lack of tropical aged PMs at my disposal (or availability in general) this will have to do for now, nevertheless 🙂

Pure licorice and wood. Alcohol could be better integrated, but for people who like port mourant it's probably one of the better ones. Personally, it's far too bitter for me and I just don't like liquorice🙈😂

Continuing my attack on my present 😍 This is a really nice release. The fruit is very subtle and almost not detectable. I didn't get it until 30 minutes of resting. Intense and the flavors are really well balanced with the ABV. Would have loved a few bottles on my shelves 😊

Rum No. 500 in the app, so something a bit special from the stash. The nose is relatively classic PM, a bit of tea, honey, almond, solvent, herbs. Smells good but not extraordinary. In the mouth the alcohol is quite upfront and takes up a lot of space. Smoke, coffee, pimento with plenty of wood. The finish lasts long and gives a good warmth. Doesn't blow me away now. For 2006 and the release price certainly remarkable. Ok, but I think there are many at this level nowadays.

Clearly Demerara, but more woody and heavier in the profile. Not as refined as other ones in the session. Alcohol stays present, but maybe not surprising at 65%…. One of the “lesser ones” in the line-up.

... The Old Velier Demerara rum is the best thing you can taste in the rum world. The rums were aged in the tropics for several years by mistake and nobody refilled the barrel. The Andel tax was 90% or more, which is why the taste is especially full and intense. Even though it is an extra expensive product, I recommend to taste a rum from this series at least once in your life.

A rough-and-ready rum. Yet the nose is very appealing, with the sweet and spicy notes of Dememara rums, fruity and woody aromas, tea and solvents. On the palate, the contrast is clear: this is a powerful, bitter rum, turning to wood, spices (licorice, ginger, chili and pepper), roasted and toasted flavors, coffee, dried fruit and tea. You can feel the 65%. A long finish continues the dry, spicy, woody framework of the palate, but adds tobacco, an appreciable hint of minty freshness and some dried and red fruits. An intense rum, difficult to tame and not for everyone.

On the nose clove, anise, herbs, olive, black tea, dried fruits and a subtle sweetness. On the palate licorice, allspice, candied fruits, toasted cask and a slightly peppery touch. The Velier reminds me of the Rum Cask PM 1997, although the Velier can add a bit more complexity, especially intensity.

Beautiful nose that releases many fruity aromas after some time. Plum, raisin, dried fruit. Black tea and lots of oak/roasted aromas. The wood notes are unfortunately very dominant on the palate. Also spices, leather and coffee. Plenty of tannins and leather on the finish.

Lots of licorice, nuts, black tea on the nose and lots of glue in the beginning. But you could let this rum rest for a nice long time, then the sweetness will come out more. In the mouth it is certainly spicy, this is really due to the poor alcohol integration. coffee, black tea, dark chocolate and woody notes are in the foreground. You really notice in the nose and mouth that the alcohol is very present. This is a shame and therefore results in a decrease in score for me.

Tasted at the Whisky Live Warsaw 2025 thanks to Krzysztof from Rum Explorer. I'm very happy I got to try this legendary bottle, it's usually something you see on the shelves as a piece from a museum. The rum itself is dark and intense, a good PM though considering it's price nowadays, you can find much better PM at a much lower price.

I've always heard mixed opinions about this bottling and driven by curiosity I decided to try it! On the nose it didn't immediately seem like a PM much less woody and dark than I expected! On the first sip a bomb of spices, wood, coffee and pepper! The rum really has an amazing intensity and the finish gives you a nice mix of fruits, wood and herbs! For me really an interesting bottling!

Even though this is a good rum, it still remains a disappointment for the price. The weakest Velier Demerara outside of the blends that I've tried so far. I'd rather go for an ED1997 for much less, which offers a very similar profile and is also fully tropical aged. And in my opinion clearly a bit better. On the palate, it pinches a bit and is more mentholated (kind of like snuff), fresher and less sweet than on the nose. Some resting time helps, but doesn't save it.

On aeration, red, citrus fruits arise, slightly fermented, molasses is candied, sweet with honey, floral, earthy with pencil shavings, leather, coffee, roasted nuts, confectionery, vanilla join. 8,8:On the palate, the attack is intense, very spicy, barrel impact is obvious with toasted wood notes like dark chocolate, coffee, leather, spicy with allspice, anise, peppery, ginger, medicinal, fruity with yellow, dried, citrus fruits, the molasses is dark with licorice, black tea, herbaceous, candied, flowery, slightly bitter, when the rum is well rested. 8,9:The finish is long, round, balanced dry&tannic with toasted oak notes like caramel, cocoa, leather, spicy with anise, peppery, fruity with slightly fermented yellow, red, citrus fruits, marmelade like, buttery dairy hints join, raisins, the molasses is dark with licorice, black tea, minty, flowery, sage pops up.

Color amber. Nose: dried fruit, plums, apricots, raisins, sweetness, caramel, leather, spices. Taste: initially hits with alcohol, furniture cleaner, sweetness, dried fruit plums, apricots, raisins, caramel, leather slightly musty, spices. Finish: long sweetness, dried fruit plums, raisins, apricots, spices, leather, alcohol has faded, warmth lingers.

Not bad, but in the Velier Guyana universe more like the lower mid-field. Alcohol integration is not optimal, plus a kind of herbal bitterness that I don't like. Of course, despite all the criticism, absolutely still at a fairly high level if you don't look at the secondary market price.

Tried twice, second time was a fresh opened bottle at whisky live last year, first time was a sample The second time experience is much much better than the first time, this again comes to my experience that velier Demerara perform better when it just opened This one has more bourbon vanilla nose when it just opens, nice green apple, grassy and greenheart woody notes from the distill, I would say it’s another fantastic rum, happy to grab more!
