LMDW Grays New Grove Savoir Faire Single Cask 2009
Blind, plenty of tasters swore this Mauritius rum was a Foursquare or a Guyana pour — that's the surprise. Molasses-based but full of peach iced tea, red berries, cocoa, spice and a fresh mint-menthol streak, wrapped in heavy French oak. At 60% the alcohol sits down well, though a few notice a slight metallic edge and a woody, drying finish.

Wow, on the nose it reminds me of a Guyana rum or even a Foursquare, with citrus fruits and other fruits such as peach dominating, especially if you give it enough time to breathe. Lots of roasted chocolate, spice, caramel, wood, and all kinds of fruit. Very pleasant on the palate, despite 60°. A complex rum, a real hit in this price segment.

Super NG frame! There's a lovely fruity side (Red / Yellow / Tropical / Dry) mixed with the empyreumatic notes that make the distillery so distinctive (Cardboard / Rum / Copper / Smoke / Oily / Rubber / Tar). This one is very (too?) woody, which brings us notes of sweet spices (Vanilla / Cinnamon / Licorice) as well as toasty notes, especially in the finish (Coffee / Dark Chocolate / Smoke) with nothing but baking. The sweetness is brought out by molasses (Burnt sugar / Burnt cream / Caramel). The NG frame is really top-notch, it's a change and it works pretty well! Nevertheless, I find this one too woody, and the column distillation certainly takes some of the body out of this rum. A pot wouldn't be out of place! It's still very good!

Without having tried it, it could almost pass as a Foursquare just by the nose. But on the palate, much fruitier and with woody notes. Edit: Another comparison with the following releases, which I’ve liked very much in previous tastings: Fine Spirits 2009 (RX2949), Savoir Faire 2012 #256 (RX7608), Savoir Faire (20Vin) 2008 (RX13081), LMDW 2009 (RX2744). For me, the LMDW is the narrow winner (8.8) because it brings the most complexity. Fine Spirits is second with 8.7, thanks to its intense mint/menthol notes that set it apart. #256 is third with 8.6, with lots of fruit and good mint. The 20Vin is quite similar to #256 but less intense, just behind with 8.5.

This is my first Mauritius molasses session, after having tasted it yesterday. A direct comparison of the Savoir Faire 2009 for LMDW, the Savoir Faire 2010 and the CDI 2009 13 yo for Perola. The 2009 LMDW has an extremely fruity attack, which is strongly reminiscent of TDL in terms of aroma: peach iced tea. Yellow fruit, peach and mirabelle plum (Alte Marille von Prinz), black tea. Only the mint is missing and the TDL image would be perfect. Behind this, a deep woodiness gives the rum a beautiful depth. Roasted almonds, a hint of coconut chocolate. This is very tasty, soft yet interesting and complex. The picture continues in the mouth. It is somewhat woodier, more astringent than the very fruity nose would suggest. Some tobacco, the fruit becomes drier. The alcohol integration is quite successful at 60%, but some bite remains. A noticeable acidity costs a few points. In the mouth, I associate it more with St. Lucia than TDLs The finish is unfortunately a little short. The PLV is fantastic despite the LMDW bottling. The PLV is fantastic despite the LMDW bottling. The 2010 LMDW is the best of my three rounds, the intensity in the mouth more than makes up for the restraint in the nose. Alcohol integration, balance, complexity all top. The 2009 is very, very close on its heels. The old apricot and the greater complexity are particularly convincing here, but the slight bite costs a few points. Perhaps the difference is more a matter of form on the day than taste. The CDI is already very good, but falls a little short. It is lighter and therefore too far on the fruity side.

So, now it has happened: This is my new Mauritius Croesus, Emotion 1969 (RX2495) has been knocked off the throne. For a better comparison though tasted against the Savoir Faire from the successor year 2010 (RX13444), but that does not change my verdict. The 2009 is perceptibly more intense and complex on both the nose and palate than the 2010. I particularly like that lovely oily fruitiness on the palate. It's just a shame that I only had a sample of the rum. If I had a bottle of that, I would split it immediately.

Super nose, totally harmonious, slightly sweet and gentle. On the palate, however, it is bursting with power. Very dark notes and a great light, subtle menthol note on the finish. I think it's really super strong.

18.01.2020 A nice little summer house meet up in ght cold part of the year. Good we had rums to keep us warm. Notes Medium dark to dark in colour. Nose Light roasted wood, spice, cinnamon, berries, light caramel, light herbal. Palate Round, oily, light wood, light caramel, light herbs, fruits, peach, light mint, light anise. Finish Medium long, round, light wood, spice, light tea, fruits, faint caramel.

Wow, this one is top class. The nose is nicely woody and especially smoky. On the palate it’s also spicy and woody. Mostly I can recognize mint again here. A really delicious piece.

Greets on the nose with lots of vanilla, the bourbon cask did a great job. Also some cocoa joins in. Also decent fruit, rather dry. Good start. On the palate, immediately fruity and intense. Lots of peach but also passion fruit and mango seem to come through, plus quite a bit of spicy roasted aromas. Remains nicely fruity on the finish with very good integration of the alcohol.

Update: wears out its welcome a bit after a while and I found myself using it for cocktails for the last 1/3. Makes one of the best Donga punches I’ve ever had (despite being a molasses rum). Good rum, the type of discovery you hope for. Alcohol barely perceptible a a hefty 60%, controlled flavor explosion in mouth. Nose and mouth gives you baskets of red and white fruit combined with a perfect mid-note of astringency dominated by elderflower which ties it all up. It’s all just so voluptuous and generous. Very rare release but more than worth seeking out.

Great Grays Mauritius rum with a nice combination of fruits (peach, red berries, passion fruit), mint-menthol, caramel and a nicely dry Virginia tobacco note. The tobacco lingers nicely on the tongue and with the menthol provides a great finish. The CDI (rx12865) I liked a bit better – especially its nice sour cherry-menthol-cognac note.
Review by Jean Louisss
The nose is superb, very fruity, excellent! The finish perhaps lacks a little punch despite a very good attack on the palate. All in all, a very good rum.

This rum is really a surprise. For me so far the best New Grove. Complex rum with a fair price-performance ratio. I like it very much. Unfortunately hard to find anywhere.

The two New Grove from LMDW in comparison, vintages 2009 and 2010. The 2009 is tastier on the nose, but loses a bit on the palate. I miss the mint and the 2009 could use a bit more wood. Overall, I tend more towards the 2010.
Review by Mentalo
Very fruity. A very nice peach (iced tea) note, spices, caramel, some wood. Slightly oily mouthfeel and the alcohol is well integrated. So far the best bottling from Grays I've had in the glass.

Tasted together with New Grove Savoir Faire LMDW 2012/ RX7608 and New Grove Savoir Faire LMDW 2010 / RX13444. Nose: The Savoir Faire 2012 immediately offers a great fruit compote, peach, passion fruit, and mirabelle. For me, the Savoir Faire 2009 has fruits that are a bit lighter and more restrained. The Savoir Faire 2010 lies between the two others for me. Palate: Besides currant, peach, and passion fruit, I find a slight mint and some Tic Tac Wintergreen in the 2012. This Tic Tac Wintergreen flavor then gradually comes to the forefront and says goodbye in a long finish together with some currant. The alcohol is very well integrated, which makes this rum quite easy to drink combined with the fruitiness. A bit of water makes it even more drinkable, but it doesn't open up much further. A really nice fruity, easy-drinking rum with a great range of aromas. If it were a bit more complex, the rating would be higher. The Savoir Faire 2009 is similarly fruity, but the aromas go slightly in another direction. I don't find currant and Tic Tac Wintergreen here, but rather some strawberry and very slight caramel. Overall, the 2009 seems a bit more classic or more in the direction of Spanish style in direct comparison, without drifting too much that way. The fruitiness is just a bit more settled and restrained. With some water, it opens up a bit more and the caramel note becomes clearer. The Savoir Faire 2010 goes more towards the 2012 in terms of fruitiness and lies between 2012 and 2009 for me. The Tic Tac Wintergreen moment can be slightly guessed in the background, with peach and light fruits in the foreground. For me, the 2010 is the most similar to a TDL of the three, although it lacks the mint or herbal notes. All three rums have a fairly astringent finish. Despite the slight differences, all three rums are on the same high level for me. Each 87 points.

In my view a little insider tip with good value for money. Complex, intense and delicate. Nose: nicely complex, dense and aromatic. Spicy, pleasantly woody and very fruity. Apricot, blackberry, currant and sour cherry, plus a hint of coconut and lovely lemon. Also creamy-sweet, vanilla and cream toffee as well as cocoa powder and slightly malty. At the back also some leather and lovage. Palate: also nicely complex and multi-layered. Initially slightly bitter, then salty before peach, apricot, sour cherry and currant follow with lemon. Also pleasantly woody-spicy with a mix of anise, clove, ginger and caraway. At the back the peach comes back again. I like it very much, wonderfully integrated alcohol, very aromatic, very round.

Well-fruited, woody and smoky, with the eccentricity of empyreumatic fermentation, for lovers of the English taste.

Oh what a nice punch. This is really fun. A round nose with spices, cocoa, a subtle lychee note and caramel and then a real flavor bomb in the mouth with many dark tones and a nice finish. A New-Grove for the home bar! Conflict of interest: I'm a New-Grove fan.

Typical fresh minty/eucalyptus and French oak in the nose. Classic New Grove. Nothing new but I love it. This is a profile I simply dig. Heavy but fresh. No weird casks or anything. Very french oaky.

I can hardly describe it accurately. little odd, but interesting thing. I feel it contains enthusiasm and can make me happy, hhh.

The nose is strong and warm. The alcohol is super integrated. The profile is dominated by fruits. Peach, melon and dried fruits. Light spice and wood. Gingerbread. Pleasing and yet interesting. On the palate then sugared peach iced tea and spices. Slightly furry and funky. I don't particularly like the finish. Bitter woodiness. A super sipper, the price-performance ratio is also great. I remember buying a few bottles of this in Vienna for the RumX community. 😀

Only 8.4 points - how is that possible? First the pros - insanely intense Mauritius profile with lots of menthol, orange and vanilla, very sweet - almost hints of caramel ... so now the cons: uneven and spritty at the back - by far not as balanced as the little brother, the 2010 bottling from LMDW - although maybe a bit more intense, but also almost too sweet. A really good rum that apparently still flies under the radar, for a price of about 80€ a really good value for money!

Smell:To Berginn sweet, fresh and fruity. Then I realize "the alcohol bites but" ...After this rather intense start, the smell becomes restrained and somehow woody. The fruitiness returns (cherry), also Cacao, chocolate and toffee with a slight smoky note in the background. After some time, some hazelnut is added.Taste:Strong spicy and woody already in the mouth, with ginger, licorice, toffee. red fruits and a very slight sweetness. When swallowing then even stronger, woody, very much licorice, very spicy.Aromas of chestnuts, juicy toffee.

An intriguing medical/fruity nose. I know it will sound weird but it's like peaches and exotic fruits mixed in arnica ointment! With time and/or the right amount of water you'll get all the different shades (50?) more precisely. Not overly complex but really entertaining. The fruity side has a not so distant link with some light Caronis. I would have like more thickness. Maybe New Grove/Grays distillery should get a pot still? Anyway Mauritius rums are definitely improving and are really worth discovering, especially this one.

Tasting Almost ordered this bottle too. Wow! Just wow. I think half of my excitement is because I didn’t expect it. But what fun. Tropical sour. Perfume. There’s wood and sweetness here, I’d like a bit less. But still, it’s an excellent dram and very very tasty and complex. Like everything I’ve tried from them but after 2-3 drams this taste gets a bit boring and becomes too much towards that floral sour side.

#4 RCP Advent Calendar Magnificent, the nose is beautiful but the palate is fabulous! Dirty, burnt, on the menthol boum and what length. Incredible but true, I already have this bottle, but blind and without aeration, a real difference with the keel opened several months ago... which opened up to more fruit!

On the nose a bit of wood, nuts, roasted notes and caramel and/or marzipan. On the tongue also nuts and wood. Very dry. The alcohol is well integrated. All in all good stuff for an uncomplicated evening.

In a blind tasting I would never have guessed Mauritius. Complex rum from nose to palate. Roasty, fruity, chocolaty, spicy, woody… very multifaceted. On the palate a nice tobacco note comes through. The tannins hit hard, giving it a very nice depth, very tasty.

Very nice concentration, fruits, a very beautiful woodiness! A slight smokiness and caramel. Very pretty rum! Definitely New Grove.
