Blind, plenty of tasters swore this Mauritius rum was a Foursquare or a Guyana pour — that's the surprise. Molasses-based but full of peach iced tea, red berries, cocoa, spice and a fresh mint-menthol streak, wrapped in heavy French oak. At 60% the alcohol sits down well, though a few notice a slight metallic edge and a woody, drying finish.

Ohne ihn probiert zu haben, könnte er alleine an der Nase fast als ein Foursquare durchgehen. Im Mund jedoch dann viel fruchtiger und holzige Noten. Edit: Nochmal ein Quervergleich mit den folgenden Abfüllungen, die mir bei vorherigen Verkostungen alle bereits sehr gut gefallen haben: Fine Spirits 2009 (RX2949) Savoir Faire 2012 #256 (RX7608) Savoir Faire (20Vin) 2008 (RX13081) LMDW 2009 (RX2744) Für mich ist der LMDW der knappe Sieger (8.8), weil er für mich am meisten Komplexität mitbringt. Mit 8.7 der Fine Spirits auf Platz 2, da er einfach krass intensive Minz/Menthol-Noten mitbringt und sich so etwas von den anderen Abfüllungen absetzt. #256 landet mit 8.6 auf Platz 3 mit viel Frucht und auch ordentlich Minze. Der 20Vin ist dem #256 ziemlich ähnlich, aber weniger intensiv und damit knapp dahinter mit 8.5

Nur 8.4 Punkte - wie geht das ? Erst mal die Pros - wahnsinnig intensives Mauritiusprofil mit viel Menthol, Orange und Vanille, sehr süß - fast schon Anklänge von Karamell ... soooo und jetz zu den Cons : hintenraus unrund und sprittig - bei weitem nicht so ausgewogen, wie der kleiner Bruder, die 2010er Abfüllung von LMDW - wenn auch dafür vieleicht einen ticken intensiever, aber auch fast schon zu süß. Ein echt guter Rum, der anscheinend immer noch unter dem Radar fliegt, für einen Preis von ca 80€ ein echt gutes PLV!

Verkostet zusammen mit New Grove Savoir Faire LMDW 2012/ RX7608 und New Grove Savoir Faire LMDW 2010 / RX13444. Nase: Der Savour Faire 2012 wartet direkt mit einem tollen Früchtekompott auf, Pfirsich, Maracuja und Mirabelle. Beim Savoir Faire 2009 sind die Früchte für mich etwas heller und zurückhaltender. Der Savoir Faire 2010 liegt für mich zwischen den beiden anderen. Gaumen: Neben Johannisbeere, Pfirsich und Maracuja finde ich beim 2012er leicht Minze und etwas Tictac Wintergreen. Dieser Geschmack von Tictac Wintergreen tritt dann nach und nach in den Vordergrund und verabschiedet sich in einem langen Abgang zusammen mit etwas Johannisbeere. Der Alkohol ist sehr gut eingebunden, was diesen Rum in Kombination mit der Fruchtigkeit recht süffig macht. Etwas Wasser macht ihn dann noch süffiger, noch weiter öffnet er sich dadurch aber nicht. Ein richtig schön fruchtiger, süffiger Rum mit einer tollen Bandbreite an Aromen. Wenn er noch etwas komplexer wäre, würde die Wertung noch höher ausfallen. Der Savoir Faire 2009 ist ähnlich fruchtig, die Aromen gehen aber leicht in eine andere Richtung. Johannisbeere und TicTac Wintergreen finde ich hier nicht, dafür etwas Erdbeere und ganz leicht Karamell. Insgesamt erscheint der 2009er im direkten Vergleich etwas klassischer bzw. mehr in Richtung spanischer Stil, ohne dass er zu sehr in diese Richtung abdriftet. Die Fruchtigkeit ist einfach etwas gesetzter und zurückhaltender. Mit etwas Wasser öffnet er sich noch etwas mehr und die Karamellnote wird deutlicher. Der Savoir Faire 2010 geht wieder etwas mehr in Richtung des 2012ers was die Fruchtigkeit betrifft und liegt für mich zwischen 2012 und 2009. Der TicTac Wintergreen Moment lässt sich ganz leicht im Hintergrund erahnen, im Vordergrund stehen Pfirsich und helle Früchte. Damit ist der 2010er für mich einem TDL von den dreien am ähnlichsten, wobei ihm die Minze bzw. Krautigkeit fehlt. Alle drei Rum sind im Abgang recht adstringierend. Alle drei Rum sind trotz der leichten Unterschiede für mich auf dem selben hohen Niveau. Jeweils 87 Punkte.

This is my first Mauritius molasses session, after having tasted it yesterday. A direct comparison of the Savoir Faire 2009 for LMDW, the Savoir Faire 2010 and the CDI 2009 13 yo for Perola. The 2009 LMDW has an extremely fruity attack, which is strongly reminiscent of TDL in terms of aroma: peach iced tea. Yellow fruit, peach and mirabelle plum (Alte Marille von Prinz), black tea. Only the mint is missing and the TDL image would be perfect. Behind this, a deep woodiness gives the rum a beautiful depth. Roasted almonds, a hint of coconut chocolate. This is very tasty, soft yet interesting and complex. The picture continues in the mouth. It is somewhat woodier, more astringent than the very fruity nose would suggest. Some tobacco, the fruit becomes drier. The alcohol integration is quite successful at 60%, but some bite remains. A noticeable acidity costs a few points. In the mouth, I associate it more with St. Lucia than TDLs The finish is unfortunately a little short. The PLV is fantastic despite the LMDW bottling. The PLV is fantastic despite the LMDW bottling. The 2010 LMDW is the best of my three rounds, the intensity in the mouth more than makes up for the restraint in the nose. Alcohol integration, balance, complexity all top. The 2009 is very, very close on its heels. The old apricot and the greater complexity are particularly convincing here, but the slight bite costs a few points. Perhaps the difference is more a matter of form on the day than taste. The CDI is already very good, but falls a little short. It is lighter and therefore too far on the fruity side.

So, now it has happened: This is my new Mauritius Croesus, Emotion 1969 (RX2495) has been knocked off the throne. For a better comparison though tasted against the Savoir Faire from the successor year 2010 (RX13444), but that does not change my verdict. The 2009 is perceptibly more intense and complex on both the nose and palate than the 2010. I particularly like that lovely oily fruitiness on the palate. It's just a shame that I only had a sample of the rum. If I had a bottle of that, I would split it immediately.

Super NG frame! There's a lovely fruity side (Red / Yellow / Tropical / Dry) mixed with the empyreumatic notes that make the distillery so distinctive (Cardboard / Rum / Copper / Smoke / Oily / Rubber / Tar). This one is very (too?) woody, which brings us notes of sweet spices (Vanilla / Cinnamon / Licorice) as well as toasty notes, especially in the finish (Coffee / Dark Chocolate / Smoke) with nothing but baking. The sweetness is brought out by molasses (Burnt sugar / Burnt cream / Caramel). The NG frame is really top-notch, it's a change and it works pretty well! Nevertheless, I find this one too woody, and the column distillation certainly takes some of the body out of this rum. A pot wouldn't be out of place! It's still very good!

Update: wears out its welcome a bit after a while and I found myself using it for cocktails for the last 1/3. Makes one of the best Donga punches I’ve ever had (despite being a molasses rum). Good rum, the type of discovery you hope for. Alcohol barely perceptible a a hefty 60%, controlled flavor explosion in mouth. Nose and mouth gives you baskets of red and white fruit combined with a perfect mid-note of astringency dominated by elderflower which ties it all up. It’s all just so voluptuous and generous. Very rare release but more than worth seeking out.

Aus meiner Sicht ein kleiner Geheimtipp mit einem guten PLV. Komplex, intensiv und delikat. Nase: schön komplex, dicht und aromatisch. Würzig, angenehm holzig und sehr fruchtig. Aprikose, Brombeere, Johannisbeere und Sauerkirsche, dazu ein Hauch Kokosnuss und liebliche Zitrone. Daneben sahnig-süß, Vanille und Sahne-Toffee sowie Kakaopulver und leicht malzig. Hinten raus auch etwas Leder und Liebstöckel. Gaumen: auch schön komplex und vielschichtig. Zunächst leicht bitter, dann salzig bevor Pfirsich, Aprikose, Sauerkirsche und Johannisbeere mit Zitrone folgen. Daneben angenehm holzig-würzig mit einer Mischung aus Anis, Nelke, Ingwer und Kümmel. Hinten raus kommt dann wieder der Pfirsich. Gefällt mir sehr gut, toll integrierter Alkohol, sehr aromatisch, sehr rund.

An intriguing medical/fruity nose. I know it will sound weird but it's like peaches and exotic fruits mixed in arnica ointment! With time and/or the right amount of water you'll get all the different shades (50?) more precisely. Not overly complex but really entertaining. The fruity side has a not so distant link with some light Caronis. I would have like more thickness. Maybe New Grove/Grays distillery should get a pot still? Anyway Mauritius rums are definitely improving and are really worth discovering, especially this one.

Smell:To Berginn sweet, fresh and fruity.Then I realize "the alcohol bites but" ...After this rather intense start, the smell becomes restrained and somehow woody.The fruitiness returns (cherry), also Cacao, chocolate and toffee with a slight smoky note in the background.After some time, some hazelnut is added.Taste:Strong spicy and woody already in the mouth, with ginger, licorice, toffee. red fruits and a very slight sweetness.When swallowing then even stronger, woody, very much licorice, very spicy.Aromas of chestnuts, juicy toffee.

18.01.2020 A nice little summer house meet up in ght cold part of the year. Good we had rums to keep us warm. Notes Medium dark to dark in colour. Nose Light roasted wood, spice, cinnamon, berries, light caramel, light herbal. Palate Round, oily, light wood, light caramel, light herbs, fruits, peach, light mint, light anise. Finish Medium long, round, light wood, spice, light tea, fruits, faint caramel.

Grüßt in der Nase mit viel Vanille da hat das Bourbon Fass ganze Arbeit geleistet. auch etwas Kakao gesellt sich dazu. Auch ordentlich Frucht eher trocken. Guter Start. Am Gaumen gleich fruchtig intensiv. Viel Pfirsich aber auch Passionsfrucht und Mango scheinen durch hinzu kommt Einiges an würzigen Röstaromen. Bleibt auch im Finish schön fruchtig bei sehr guter Integration des Alkohols.

Toller Grays Mauritius Rum mit einer schönen Kombination von Früchten (Pfirsich, Rote Beeren, Passionsfrucht), Minz-Menthol, Karamell und eine schön trockene Virginia Tabaknote. Der Tabak bleibt schön lang auf der Zunge und sorgt mit dem Menthol für einen super Abgang. Der CDI (rx12865) hat mir aber einen Ticken besser gefallen – besonders dessen schöne Sauerkirsch-Menthol-Cognac Note.

Wow, an der Nase erinnert er mich an einen Guyana Rum oder auch an einen Foursquare, wobei hier Zitrusfrüchte und andere Früchte wie Pfirsich dominant sind, vor allem wenn man ihm genügend Zeit zum Atmen gibt. Viel geröstete Schokolade, Gewürz, Karamell, Holz und allerlei Frucht. Im Mund sehr angenehm, trotz 60°. Komplexer Rum, in diesem Preissegment, ein wahrer Hit.

#4 RCP Advent Calendar Magnificent, the nose is beautiful but the palate is fabulous! Dirty, burnt, on the menthol boum and what length. Incredible but true, I already have this bottle, but blind and without aeration, a real difference with the keel opened several months ago... which opened up to more fruit!

טעימה כמעט הזמנתי גם את הבקבוק הזה. וואו! פשוט וואו. אני חושב שחצי מההתלהבות שלי זה כי לא ציפיתי. אבל איזה כיף. חמוץ טרופי. בושם. יש פה עץ ומתיקות הייתי רוצה קצת פחות. אבל עדין מדובר בדראם מעולה ומאוד מאוד טעים ומורכב. כמו כל מה שניסיתי מהם אבל אחרי 2-3 דראמים הטעם הזה קצת משעמם אותך ונהיה יותר מידיי לכיוון הפרחוני חמוץ כזה.

Och was ein schöner Wumms. Das macht wirklich Spaß. Eine runde Nase mit Gewürzen, Kakao, dezenter Litchi-Note und Karamell und dann eine echte Aromen-Bombe im Mund mit vielen dunklen Tönen und einem schönem Abgang. Ein New-Grove für die eigene Bar! Conflict of interest: Bin New-Grove-Fan

Die beiden New Grove vom LMDW im Vergleich, Jahrgänge 2009 und 2010. Der 2009 ist an der Nase leckerer, am Gaumen verliert er aber etwas. Ich vermisse die Minze und der 2009 könnte etwas mehr Holz vertragen. Insgesamt tendiere ich doch eher zu dem 2010.
