Blind tasting: clearly a Spanish nose - but one of the more complex ones: dark roasted coffee and almonds, chocolate, caramelized or almost burnt sugar. Dried dates and apricots can be found on the fruit - a good start. The palate has a medium body characterized by a strong - perhaps a little too strong - barrel influence. A slight sweetness at the beginning, tobacco and some of the aromas from the nose. The finish has a small drawback, as it is unfortunately a little too short for me, but pleasantly dry and slightly bitter. I suspect this to be a medium-aged (10-13 years) Central American with 52-54%, with a very strong tendency towards Belize. Guatemala would also be a possibility here, or a slightly older Panamanian with >18 years. In any case, a great Spanish rum that I really liked. If it is a rum from Belize, I am very curious to see how these rums will develop in the future. 81 points

Rum for whisky drinkers. Heavy on the American Oak/bourbon cask. But well done. Good and strong flavours. And that from the same stills that give us that sugared Zacapa and Botran. This is so much better.

Guatemala makes soft, sweet, dessert-like rum, and it does it high in the volcanic highlands where the thin, cool air slows maturation. Its base is virgin sugar cane honey, a concentrated first-press cane syrup rather than molasses, and its calling card is the Sistema Solera. One name towers over the country: Ron Zacapa.
