Velier Nine Leaves Warren Khong Encrypted 2014
"The best Japanese rum I have tasted so far," one member says, and the fans agree: chocolate, malty cereal, hazelnut, roasted notes and warm spice from a young Nine Leaves pot still bottled by Velier. At 64.8% it's fiery and youthful, needs air to round out into raisin and caramel, and a couple of tasters felt the alcohol still isn't fully tucked in.

A really great and exceptional rum! Really lots of umami on the palate. I'm very curious to see how long-stored rums from this distillery will taste.

02.01.2020 Only have notes on this one. Nose: wood, roasted, spice, chocolate, round, caramel. Palate: oily, fresh, balanced, wood, roasted, nutts, warm, light smoke. Finish: long and warm, dried fruit, wood, light smoke, chocolate. Medium dry.

Still shows youthful freshness and also some expressive spiciness. Thanks to the heavy sweet notes, however, there is a pleasant counterbalance to this. A profile with an arc of tension, a harbinger of what can be teased out of this world of flavor with additional maturation - a charming evening companion with sophistication that only lacks a little balance.

9,2:On the nose, bourbon barrel impact, citrus and peaches, roasted wood notes like pastry, biscuits, oaky, allspice, fermented notes with dairy hints, flowery molasses, vegetal with cereal, olive, herbaceous, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, it becomes greener, grassy, sugarcane hints come out, Jasmine, pumpkin join, chocolate, caramel, malt hints, delicious, complex. 8,9:On the palate, the attack is creamy, oily with dairy, roasted wood notes like nougat, cocoa, caramelized, pastry, roasted nuts, spicy with allspice, ginger, vanilla, peppery, allspice, oaky, a bit salty, fruity with bourbon barrel impact fruits like citrus, peaches, raisins join, molasses is vegetal with chilli, tea, herbaceous, flowery, complex. When the rum is well oxidized, fruit schnapps hints are present. 8,8:The finish is long, dry&tannic, with toasted oak notes like caramel, nougat, chocolate, roasted nuts, spicy with umami, warm, juniper hints join, bourbon barrel impact is still obvious, less fruity, quite intense, oily with cream, molasses is grassy, herbaceous, dark with licorice. The Nine Leaves notes clearly come to the fore on the palate. I consider this Nine Leaves the best I have tasted so far. Wonderfully balanced. More full woody notes, sweetness, wine, spices, and delicious herbs. The finish lingers for a wonderfully long time. It feels warm in the mouth due to the alcohol; personally, I don't find this bothersome, it is a nice addition.

Beautiful, unusual rum. In this day and age, when newly discovered curiosities are fewer and farther between, I see a future for nine leaf rums. It's different, it's interesting, it's significant... unfortunately it's not cheap, but if you can, try it!
Review by TheRhumhoe
The profile of Nine Leaves is as peculiar as it is captivating, and this Velier bottling fits perfectly in this category. The nose is intense, initially leaning towards caramel, then becoming more chocolatey and malty, also including quite a bit of wood, spices, nuts and tobacco but also roasted notes. A bit of freshness and herbs sneak into the nose after some time. The profile remains quite alcoholic though. There is a lively attack on the palate with alcohol fumes and warm spices (chili, ginger), then more woody (oak) and herbal (tea) notes that release the rum a bit. Only after some aeration do rounder notes of raisins, caramel, chocolate and hazelnut appear and broaden the aromatic spectrum. It is a very evolving, complex and bewildering profile. The alcohol is present, but the profile is very interesting for its age. The finish is very good and savored in length, both dry and intense. You can distinguish a bit of raisin, quite a bit of wood and more roasted or smoky aromas. You discover a nice caramelized envelope with nuts, chocolate and spices. It ends on a softer and more approachable note than the nose and the start on the palate. A fiery and demanding rum but the patience is worth it, proof that youth can combine power and complexity.

For me, clearly the best bottling from Nine Leaves. Nice sweetness, spices, wine, plum, umami, nuts, a bit of chocolate, and a touch of wood. Beautiful intensity and complexity. The alcohol could be a bit more integrated.
