Grays New Grove Single Cask Rum (Fine Spirits) 2009
Grapefruit and yellow fruit lead — mango, apricot, passionfruit — then a big wash of black tea and cool menthol that sets this Mauritian apart. Caramel, sandalwood and pepper fill in behind. At 58.5% the alcohol bites a little neat, so most tasters give it a few drops of water to let the fruit and mint stretch out. Dry, tea-bitter finish.

Review by Gunnar Böhme "Bauerngaumen" 🤓
These orange bottlings from Grays usually (for some unknown reason) lead a shadowy existence behind the exquisite white-grey single cask bottlings from the same distillery. This one is no exception. It is therefore not all that surprising that it is still available on the primary market and has not yet been noticed or given a rating by anyone. So I'll start with this one - and it comes with a BAM! Even though I now have the feeling that I'm slowly losing credibility with my recent almost consistently very high ratings, I absolutely have to put this rum up there. Right at the top. It might even be my new benchmark for New Grove single casks. That remains to be seen when I taste it against my previous favorite (RX2744, of course also from the outstanding distillation year 2009). This time I pitted it against the recently split special bottling for 20 vin (RX13081) for an initial assessment. Although this is more fruity overall, its only 50% can't compete with the 58.5% of the special bottling for Fine Spirits. The (visually lighter) Fine Spirits bottling is simply a stunner, as is clear from the nose, but it really comes into its own on the palate. Anyone who likes heavy, dark tea and menthol tones and not so much the otherwise typical sweet and light (yellow or red) fruits will get their money's worth here. A challenging rum of the upper class. I will split it as soon as the supply arrives. Update 2024-08-11: So, it doesn't knock the RX2744 off its throne after all. In direct comparison, the RX2744 is oilier and not quite as tea-bitter as the RX2949, which has more menthol to offer and better alcohol integration. Therefore, one point deduction for the RX2949 compared to yesterday's rating and thus a tie with the RX2744. Two fantastic rums and for me the flagships of Grays.

Ranked number 1 in the Mauritius cross-tasting. Compared to the "Mauritians" tasted in parallel, here the nose is dominated more by spicy aromas. On the palate then super intensely fruity with apricot/peach without end, some tea and mint. Not super complex but absolutely delicious :) Edit: Another cross-comparison with the following bottlings, which I already liked very much in previous tastings: Fine Spirits 2009 (RX2949) Savoir Faire 2012 #256 (RX7608) Savoir Faire (20Vin) 2008 (RX13081) LMDW 2009 (RX2744) For me, the LMDW is the narrow winner (8.8) because it brings the most complexity for me. With 8.7 Fine Spirits is in second place because it simply brings insanely intense mint/menthol notes and thus stands out a bit from the other bottlings. #256 lands with 8.6 in third place with lots of fruit and also quite a bit of mint. The 20Vin is quite similar to #256 but less intense and thus just behind with 8.5 Edit2: I now see it on par with the 2009 LMDW, although the profiles are clearly different.

8,3:On the nose, solvents bump in our nosetrils, then mostly roasted wood notes like nuts, caramel, burnt sugar with sandal tones and flowery molasses, from fruits just an apricot and grapefruit. On aeration, spices arise, candied fruits and mango, some menthol, vegetal notes and chocolate. 8,5:On the palate, the attack is syrupy, sweet with fruits like grapefruit, dried dates, apricots, raisins and roasted wood like toffee, brown sugar.The molasses is floral, herbaceous and a bit dark with black tea. After nice rest, menthol, banana and spices like pepper, vanilla are present, round. 8,4:The finish is long, dry, dirty and bitter, less balanced with similar notes as before, just with some dark chocolate as an addition..

Pearl! I wouldn't have expected the fruit bomb you get here. Lots of yellow fruit and citrus, as well as tropical fruit. Surprisingly herbal, spicy and fruity on the palate. Roasted notes and chocolate add a new facet to the finish. Great rum, very special.

Great nose of yellow fruit in particular, such as mirabelle plum, apricot, mango and yellow sweet grapefruit, plus caramel, cookies and various spices. Passion fruit, grapefruit peel and menthol on the palate, followed by dark chocolate, roasted aromas like burnt caramel and strong Assam black tea on the finish. A beautiful release! Only the alcohol integration could be a tad better. Blindly, I would probably guess it to be a TDL. Thanks Gunnar!

Absolute price-pleasure grenade! 💥

Wow, great stuff, also really mild after the Hampden just now, which had only 10% more. What you can definitely taste very clearly here is the Black Sea coast, otherwise caramel, vanilla, wood, and spice.

Single Casks from New Grove are much finer and more intense... Nose: an insanely great interplay of tropical fruits, floral notes, spices and pastries. Passion fruit, papaya and coconut upfront, behind gooseberry and actually starfruit fits very well too. A nice fresh chamomile note and fragrant violets come in. And lots of creamy toffee, fruit bread and macaroons. At the back also slightly spicy with nutmeg, caraway and clove. Strong. 8.8 Palate: wow, wonderfully fruity and spicy. Initially pleasantly salty with a hint of nutmeg and clove, then come the tropical fruits passion fruit and starfruit, as well as gooseberry and cherry. Also lime and lemon upfront, slightly bitter. Mint and green tea at the back. Very tasty. 8.8 Worth trying.

Aromas of tropical fruits (ripe mango and grapefruit), caramel, sandalwood, and spices. On the palate sweet, fruity (passion fruit, grapefruit), and spicy-alcoholic. When swallowing very spicy-peppery. Woody and dry with black tea and menthol. Slightly fruity (dried dates) with some toffee and tar. Dry, woody, spicy and slightly bitter with tar and lots of black tea.

Grays Distillery really makes fine molasses rum under the label “New Grove.” These lovely fruits, consisting of peach, lychee, passion fruit, and blackcurrant combined with the gentle blend of black tea and mint, always please me anew. Great class!

Nice complex body in the nose and on the palate. Pleasant spiciness, citrus fruits, caramel, vanilla in the nose. On the palate, mint and pepper join in. Very dry in the finish. I really like this New Grove.

Wow, what a beast! Thanks to @Gunnar Böhme for the chance to try this little gem. I don't want to add anything to Gunnar's review, he's right about everything. A really great rum. Christmas will be expensive and beautiful. I'll have to save on the kids' gifts :-;

I was curious about this one after Gunnar raved about it. On the nose the typical Grays profile. On the palate: Phew, it's a bit harsh. The alcohol bites a bit. The typical Grays aromas of red fruits like cassis, currant and also a bit of Tic Tac wintergreen are present, but a bit "sharper" than in, for example, some Savoir Faire bottlings. This guy wants to be tamed and gets some water for that, which helps him unfold. Definitely a good drop, but I can't quite understand the huge enthusiasm. Thanks to Gunnar for the sample!

Wonderfully strong with a hint of grapefruit... Very nicely fruity. Truly a pleasure on the palate. Incredible aroma and considering the price, a clear buying recommendation. Great drop.. grab it quickly.

Tasted like great TDL!

Very nice New Grove. On the nose, yellow fruits, mango in front, menthol and a light caramel. The palate is very balanced between the different flavors. Mango, mirabelle, peach, red fruits, fine caramel and menthol. Nice relatively long finish.
