Intense, dark amber-golden color and bold, rich aroma of caramel, vanilla, honey, freshly roasted coffee and oak. Soft, round, strong and sweet on the tongue with the characteristics of the aroma.

Dark chocolate, but even more intense coffee on nose and palate. In the finish, a bit of orange peel comes in. The alcohol is still somewhat present in the finish despite the 40%.

Had a very nice Dictador tasting this Sunday and this is the second one of the six. This is the second time I have this rum in a tasting and this time it got a few more points. This rum is made from sugarcane and honey molasses, which is pretty rare. In this rum you can really smell and taste the honey. This is a must try if you like Zacapa rum because they're pretty similar. Price to quality is very good. This rum won gold at the 2010 International Rum Expert Panel.

Clearly a rum that has been artificially sweetened..... I'm not sure what the 20 means, pretty typical Latin American exaggeration with the age statements! There is vanilla, and a coffee note that I got, and lot of sweet caramel. Not much of a finish. It's not the worst rum however, and it does disappear very quickly - its easy to drink with no bite at all, almost a liquer.

Found again at the very back when rearranging in the cupboard. It was one of my starter rums or for mixing for CubaLibre. With my current taste, I can no longer understand how I could have liked it. Well, many have probably gone through this hard school. Will now have to use it for sweetening espresso and baking. Adjusted downwards a little.

7,8:Nose as usual with Dictador, opens with a good glassful of coffee. But to stop there would be to state the obvious: this coffee is flavored with vanilla and sweetened with a dollop of molasses. Black molasses has a distinct licorice aroma. The nose is quite dry, with walnuts, pecans and almonds. These nuts are caught in a hard caramel, and we can now easily visualize a slab of crunchy nougatine. Licorice continues to lead the way on aeration, bathed in tobacco and coffee smoke. Caramelized nuts like pecan are still present, forming a powder mixed with spices. In this definitely very dark register, bread and wood are toasted. 7,3:On the palate, a small, sweet bubble of yellow fruit bursts out and spills over first. This sweetness compensates for the darker side of the nose, which logically translates here into a peppery, even spicy harshness. This continues with salted brown caramel, lots of coffee and a spicy woodiness where coriander adds a little freshness and whimsy. Molasses and licorice complete the deep, dark picture. 7,2:The last lingering notes on the palate are dry walnuts, caramelized pecans and maple syrup. Well, shortly, coffeeeeee time 😄. Quite alcoholic on the nose, with a slight sweetness on the palate but quite a sting, nevertheless a more grown-up drink.

Coffee, vanilla, dark chocolate, caramel, toffee, and a bit of tobacco give it a strong, dark profile. At the same time, it remains smooth and easy to drink. However, it sometimes feels a bit thin, sweetened, and the strong coffee note can overshadow other flavors. But as an uncomplicated sipper, it's totally fine.

Compared to the 12-year-old bottling, the aromas here are much gentler and less spectacular. The distinctive Maggi, honey, malt aromas are much weaker, instead more woody and roasted and go more towards chocolate and coffee.

On The Rocks: On the nose we get hints of sweetness, bacon, mild fruit and spice. Taste reveals a little more sweet and spice with bacon and coffee undertones. Finish is medium and mildly sweet. Mixed Pepsi Zero: On the nose mild sweetness. Taste has mild sweetness that evolves into mild coffee and a slight bitterness. Finish is very short with a slight bitterness.

Caramel, vanilla, coffee and a bit of rust are detectable. On the palate it is very sweet with coffee, chocolate, honey and lots of walnut. The finish is very short with lots of chocolate. For my taste too artificial and way too sweet.

Sehr geschmackvoller Rum, abseits von "üblichen" Fruchtnoten, Sherry etc. Der Geruch direkt nach Kaffee, Rauch und Tabak. Auch im Geschmack dann schöne Kaffeenoten mit Tabak, etwas Karamell und hinten raus Zartbitterschokolade. Im Nachgeschmack bleibt der Kaffee etwas länger im Mund.

News about Dictador: I still believe that the rums are sweetened and provided with additives, so I wrote to the German importer 'Kirsch Import' and drew attention to various articles on the net and now received an answer. You can find the answer as an attached picture.

By now it's too sweet for me. But the coffee notes and the smell of chocolate are really strong. A bit of vanilla too. Feels a bit thin and disappears quickly. Unfortunately, the finish is very short.

Dictador: a dishonest rum brand? An interview with Dictador's master blender (http://consulhonorariostuttgart.de/?q=de/destileria_colombiana) explains a lot. The fact is that Dictador has never used the solera system and buys in some of the light alcohols for its rums. The alcohol content may also not be correct, which conceals a small amount of added sugar. The brand's marketing is very good, even though I have never seen Dictador in a supermarket. Overall, not the best impression. This rum comes with a lot of roasted aromas of coffee and chocolate, with a perceptible alcohol note. The rum is good in principle, but lacks complexity. Does the price match the quality? Probably not.

On the nose, a bit of coffee, a hint of menthol, and a certain minerality. In the glass, a dark amber and a slightly oily consistency. On the palate, however, a play between watery and creamy. Flavor-wise, coffee, caramel, and a bit of toothpaste. The finish is rather reserved, mild, sweetish with very little spice.

Maple, maple, maple. For both the 12 year and the 20 year, it smells like a bottle of alcoholic maple syrup. The 20 year is less sweet in taste and a more well rounded rum. Maple is carried into the taste but it is enjoyable with spice and vanilla from the barrel coming through.

A good "everyday rum" if you want a sweeter experience in the evening. Like the 12, this one is characterized by aromas of coffee, dark chocolate, as well as nutty and woody notes. Vanilla and caramel also come through very well. A good rum, but I still find it slightly weaker compared to the 12, as the aromatic profile is less intense.

In der Nase dominieren Kaffee, Holz und Karamell. Am Gaumen ist Schokolade, Kaffee und etwas Lakritz zu schmecken. Eine rauchige Note ist allgegenwärtig. Pur ganz OK, als Mixgetränk super. Fazit: Ein guter Süßrum mit Kaffeearoma.

Lots of coffee, lots of chocolate. A little too much of everything. Not a highlight, but not undrinkable either. If you want to have a drink in the evening without constantly wanting/needing to analyze your rum, then the Dictador is justified. Not a must-have in my collection.

Not quite convincing taste. Very similar to its 12 year twin. Really sweet but pleasant, fruity on nose and palate, good opening for beginners. I met this one in Viking camp while rafting on Vltava river.

The aroma is pleasant and slightly sweet, raising high expectations for the rum. However, these are somewhat muted for me when it comes to the taste, bringing it back down to earth. It simply lacks complexity. The finish is also a bit weak. All in all, pleasant to drink but rather underwhelming. Little character.

15/05/2026: Advent calender: Le Monde des Rhums 2025. Apparently, this Dictator is made with sugar cane honey which is rather rare. It's very watery and thin, but the flavours that are there are okay. It's dark, woody, coffee like, but on the sweet side.

Bäh! Sind in der Nase noch relativ angenehme süße Kaffee- und Schokoladennoten vorhanden, passiert am Gaumen so gut wie nichts. Wirkt wie gefärbtes und gesüßtes Wasser mit einem Schuss Supermarktrum aus dem untersten Regal. Ich hätte blind auf HC 3 años oder so getippt. Finger weg, wer sich nicht den Abend vermiesen will.

My RumRatings review from 6 years ago: After not really liking the 12-year-old Dictador, I was a bit nervous. But it was worth it. Even on the nose, the 20-year-old is much more balanced and complex. Caramel, wood, honey, sugarcane, and dark chocolate are recognizable. Over time, woody and spicy notes emerge. On the palate, sweet caramel notes with roasted hazelnut come through. Cocoa, lots of mocha, and oak wood. Leather is present, this time very well integrated. It is silky and full-bodied, and now I can also taste coffee. The finish is long with more sharpness. It is accompanied by pepper, wood, and chocolate. I did not expect the 20-year-old Dictador to be so much more mature. The longer aging clearly makes a difference here. The extra cost is therefore worth it. Actually, the flavor world of Dictador is not quite what I’m looking for, but it convinced me. Not a classic sweet rum. Something completely unique.

It’s on the sweeter side, so indicative of some dosage. A bit one dimensional given the price and clearly not a true 20 year old being Solera aged. A lot of candied sweeter notes on the nose but more muted in the mouth and a spice somewhat short finish, some alcoholic intensity. Many praised it but for me a bit disappointing. Compared to the 12, definitely a cleaner, softer, not too sweet traditional rum flavor profile. But something seems to be missing. In this price category I expected more because its competitors offer more for the same price. Don't get me wrong, an absolutely fine, soft rum, if I only drink this I might not feel anything missing but tasting it alongside others it falls a bit short. I miss the slight fruitiness, some light extra flavor to highlight it, but otherwise absolutely recommended category :)

Direct comparison with its 12 YO version just proved my point that they are very similar. 20YO being almost identical in taste but is just tastes milder and sweeter than 12 YO. Taking 3 points down. Walnuts, vanilla and coffee all around. Not sure whether it is worthy of an extra cost of 20 yo against 12. But this one is a bit more sweet which might be appealing to some.
