Silver Seal Nicaragua Rum 1998
You might expect the usual soft, sweet Nicaraguan style here — but 21 years and Silver Seal's cask push it somewhere drier and stranger. Floral nose with lemon, mandarin and apple, a faint cold-cigar smoke, then honey and vanilla. The palate turns creamy with tobacco, caramel, licorice and a green, herbal edge. One taster even called it "Nicaragua goes Jamaica." Feels a touch thin for 50%.

How does Silver Seal Nicaragua Rum 1998 taste?
Aggregated from 25 community reviews.
Dry, floral aged Nicaragua with tobacco A decent, oddly complex old Nicaragua. Fans of the drier, spirit-forward style rate it well, though a few find the body thin and the Spanish character not to their taste.

Fruity-floral nose. In front lovely lemon with tangerine, behind it apple and some grape. There is also a fine smoke note through, cold cigar smoke, but only very gently and in addition some spicy vanilla. Light sweetness of honey and sugar syrup but determine the smell.Palate: acts despite the almost 50% somewhat thin. Have as first again this light cigar smoke, followed by slightly bitter lime peel. Also reminds of a white wine with some grape and apple. Out the back it turns greenish, tastes a bit like flower stalks. I don't quite like the Spanish style, unfortunately. The age makes this one a bit more interesting though.

Another very nice rum from Silver Seal and its not that expensive actually. The nose starts of on a floral note with a bit of herbal touches. Then you have fruit and vanilla followed by a hint of chocolate, coffee and nuts. The palate is creamy with fruits and spices followed by a nice mix of sugar, caramel, tobacco and flowers. At the end there is a nice oaky twist to it. The finish is long and warm with licorice and tobacco topped with some nice oak.

A very decent Nicaragua. Some weird complexities. But all in all a good cask selection from silver seal. This needed a lot of time to change to the better. This is however unfortunately not the standard for Nicaragua...
