This is Hampden's lowest-ester OWH mark: banana, pineapple and that telltale glue-and-varnish funk, but softer and drier than the punchier bottlings. Wood shows up more than in younger Hampdens. Most people treat it as their first real Jamaican, and it does that job well.

One of my favorite rums, and my reference for a straight 8.0. Good entry to unadulterated rums. After having lots of other samples I came back to this, and found it dryer than I remembered, also I now recognized the wood. I still like it but I detract some points to balance it against others I have tasted. Also, this is one of my first honest rums, guiding me to my journey, so it gets the honor of having the first RumX Picture taken ever. Oliver, you got me, finally!

I am surprised this was the 2022 rum of the year runner up (the whisky exchange). It was a confusing cluster for opposing flavours and smells. If that’s what you define as funky I guess it was. Not very pleasant, and at £70 a bottle is disappointing.

Nose: Bright and expressive, with banana, esters, tropical fruits, pineapple, a hint of nail polish, and soft vanilla. Palate: A sweet and vibrant profile of banana, tropical fruits, esters, and woody undertones. Finish: Dry and structured, with lingering wood, spice, and tropical fruit notes.

Edit Edit: batch #1 is better than batch #2 Edit: it's also really good as a mixer. Simply a classic. Good price/performance ratio. Works wonderfully to enhance both cocktails and long drinks. For me, it's the best entry-level Hampden and always will be. That's why I had to upgrade it again.

Undoubtedly one of the most typical and accessible Jamaican rums on the market. The profile starts with very fruity notes with tropical fruits (pineapple, banana) and mandarin, then lets the famous esters speak that some might have felt for the first time here: nail polish, glue and fermented notes offer this very singular fragrance of Jamaica. There are also some quite subtle spicy notes that add a bit of substance to the profile. It's a balanced and rather soft nose for beginners. The attack on the palate is quite marked, notably by tropical fruits and citrus but also esters. More medicinal effluves appear alongside spicier, roasted, toasted and woody flavors. Roundness expresses itself on the length. One feels a certain softness in the profile, dry and slightly funky. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish is medium length, marked by an astringency from the barrel tannins and accentuated by the esters. Overripe exotic fruits cross the spicy, peppery, hot and smoky aromas of the end of the mouth. This Hampden is a must for anyone starting with rum, you either love it or hate it, but it's a nice product with a very good quality/price ratio.

Always just as pleasant. The first Jamaican rum I tasted. And the one that gave me my first slap. Never had the chance to try batch 1 but this one is already very enjoyable. A Younger and an 8-year-old to discover the Jamaican terroir and we're on top!

At my first tasting, I was not satisfied with this rum, mainly because the esters were too weakly pronounced. I can now overlook that, because a solid fruitiness is still present, although less than maybe expected.

In direct comparison to the predecessor RX11:nose less fruity, reminiscent of Scotch.Also in the taste I am surprised by the similarity to Scotch, I have not noticed so strongly before.It seems to me as if the rum would lose with increasing air contact in the opened bottle at fruity. With freshly opened bottle he has pleased me still a little better.

A typical Hampden, lots of tropical fruits, as always lots of banana and pineapple, esters also clearly recognizable, otherwise also very fermented, lacquer and polish also recognizable. Could handle a few more % alcohol.

An OWH with few esters, but still the distinct fruit aromas are present on the nose. Also the roasted associations and something fermented or buttery is there. Dry on the mouth, tobacco, sharpness, spices, roasted and less fruity than on the nose. For me, it counts as an entry-level into the Jamaica world.

A very successful Hampden, especially for starting out in the world of Jamaican men. It remains soft, round, easy to drink. Nice light fruit compote with fairly light esters and alcohol strength. It can also be used in mixology.

Immediately you know it’s a Hampden, all the classic notes you would expect come flooding up in the nose. On the mouth you had tobacco, polish, and some more muted tropical fruits. The finish is on the dry side, with woody and tropical fruit notes. It drinks well for its ABV, doesn’t feel underpowered, and is an enjoyable sipper. It’s good for sure, just not an exceptional rum standalone and some of the other Hampdens are to my tastes just more impressive and memorable

If you want a few esters for a small price, you are absolutely safe here. Great value for money. The product has a lot of what Jamaica has to offer. Pineapple, banana, ester, wood and spices. For me it could have a few percent more.

The mouth is really broken down into several movements with the roasted coffee in the middle. It goes very well with a square of dark chocolate, the coffee and the smoke coat it, it's great... The more the tasting progresses, the more the rum is exceptional and releases smoked cigar aromas, hotter and hotter, nuts... It is terrible Real rum to be tasted one spends a very good moment That can really be worth to have a bottle of it but is worth almost 2 times the price of a Smith and Cross which resembles to him well in spite of which is more tobacco than coffee Very beautiful discovery

Back then, the first Jamaican rum for me. Still gladly welcomed today. Nose: fruity (especially banana but also some pineapple). The fruits are partly slightly fermented. Esters and varnish notes detectable. Also some wood and light vanilla. Taste: fruity and spicy. Especially banana. Wood notes as well as esters and varnish notes detectable. After a while, also light roasted notes and some sweetness recognizable. The esters and varnish notes seemed much, much more intense to me back then. Still very tasty. The empty glass smells distinctly and pleasantly of pineapple. Also really okay in a Mai Tai but here probably rums with a bit more % are more suitable. Just fun and (by now) easy to drink. Would like a few % more in strength. My references for an 8.0 (I copied that from one or two other reviews).

A truly awesome drop from a renowned distillery. Despite the smaller Jamaica Ester marks, a pretty high congeners content. Incredible body, long-lasting finish. Very well integrated. Great for getting a first taste of Hampden.

A good introduction to the Hampden world, if you have drunk so far rather more dignified rums. The taste of tropical fruits or esters is present, but does not overwhelm like some other bottlings with higher ABV or higher Marks. However, I find its big overproof brother even better, because this delivers a stronger taste, here you notice the dilution but clearly.

First tasting: 09.10.26 Tried relatively quickly, so not final yet. On the nose, you immediately get slightly overripe banana and pineapple. The sweetness comes from that too. Similar on the palate. Also a lot of banana and a nutty finish. Second tasting: 11.10.26 Banana and pineapple are still there. Nutty notes are in the background but run through the aroma, taste, and finish. Unsweetened and you can tell, yet there is a sweetness, but more subtle. The 46% ABV is very well integrated, but a good pre-sip is needed.

Nice own bottling of Hampden, upscale quality for permanent presence in the market. The genes are there, albeit diluted. Nice easy sipper. Tip: Put the bottle times ne weile in the hot sun, then comes the really good. 😉👍🏻

On the nose, you first notice raisins, dried fruits, honey, beeswax, and furniture polish. Then come banana, vanilla, Malaga ice cream, and later citrus fruits. On the palate, you taste caramel, tobacco, leather, burnt sugar, and crème brûlée. Soon grilled banana dominates. Rum raisins, Malaga ice cream, and dried fruits add to it. Wood and the cask are always present. With plenty of air, you almost only taste wood and banana. What some reviewers describe as watery is, in my view, a watery mouthfeel. It’s not a high-ester rum, and you can taste that. But it’s kind of an entry point to that style and overall a very successful rum that works well as an everyday sipper. The finish is short. Compared directly to the unaged OWH with higher alcohol from the black 8-Marks collection, the cask aging changes the aroma and flavor completely. The original distillate is unrecognizable.

Absolutely classic, nicely fruity rum. Not very estery but fruity with pineapple, banana, tropical fruits. Not much ester. Moderate alcohol. A classic, also very good to drink neat. But I expected a bit more. Lots of wood in the finish. Maybe also a bit watery or somewhat slender, finer, like whiskey. Maybe the old version was better?

Banana, but lighter than some of the higher ester Hampden marks. Caramel and oak. Vanilla, coconut. Pours dark amber. In the mouth, there's some lemon spritzer vibe, maybe tangerine. A little more oak and some pepper on the finish, which is medium in length. Sample shared by Moss.

Great nose that really stands out as soon as you open the bottle. Ripe tropical fruits and esters are immediately present, joined by a glue note and some wood. Very fruity on the palate, with a slightly nutty spice. Fills the mouth strongly, warm and a bit peppery on the finish. Awesome stuff that offers a great entry into the advanced league of Jamaican rums. If you've reached the first smoky Islay malts in whisky, this is basically the equivalent in the rum category. Highly recommended.

Right away quite a classic varnish and a very ripe fruit impression. You can quite well imagine the dunder that fermented in the sun more and more. It transports you. Some hints of pineapple and bananas, passion fruit too, although it's still hard to distinguish much in this compote. A sweetness, and even though all this remains very natural, it's borderline for me. It wouldn't take much more to be too much. A bit spicier on the palate but still very fruity. Average finish. A rum that has a certain power despite the dilution but is still very round. I still prefer the overproof version 😅 Apparently batch 1 was better... To be tested

For me, one of the "standard" Jamaica rums. For the price, you definitely can't go wrong with the Hampden 8. It's excellent for cocktails but can also be enjoyed very well neat. Hampden definitely has better releases and personally, I'm more into high-ester rums. But as a "baseline," this rum is solid and offers a good 8.0 for me as a reference for other Jamaican rums.

The oak is very dominant and hides most fruit notes I typically get from a Hampden. This reminds me a lot of a Scotch and I had way better Scotches at this price point to be honest. At least I now know that I prefer the younger Hampdens.

... Hampden, legendary Jamaican distillery, which besides rum also produces alcohol for perfumes. In all rums from this distillery, you can sense wild esters, after which your whole body soaks in the scent of yellow tropical fruits - mango, papaya, pineapple, peach. One of the rums you "must try before you die".
