Despite the "25 years" on the label, several tasters barely notice a gap between this and the younger Malecon bottlings. What's in the glass is a soft Panama sipper: caramel, vanilla, nutty spice and a touch of dark chocolate, with wood coming through on the palate. One reviewer found it thinner than expected, and it reads less sweet than the aroma suggests. Balanced, easy, Cuban-style in feel.

8,2:On the nose, toasted wood/oak notes like caramel, roasted nuts, leather, spicy with vanilla, baking spices, smoky, dried fruits like raisins and apricots, prunes, orange peel, floral molasses, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, molasses is earthy with tobacco, thick, musty, banana arises, burnt sugar, chocolate, coffee join, some metallic patina. 7,7:On the palate, the attack is sweet with toasted wood/oak notes like caramel, burnt sugar, dark chocolate, nuts, confectionery, spicy with vanilla, baking spices, smoky, fruity with dried fruits like raisins and apricots, prunes, citrus fruits, some candied, molasses is thick, slightly vegetal. 7,6:The finish is short, dry and tannic with toasted oak notes, dried, citrus fruits, marmalade like, light, mild, creamy, molasses is earthy.

#4052 A pretty good rum when looking at the price tag. Fruity and sweet with nice spices and caramel. The empty glass is really nice and has stronger caramel and some coffee notes.

A balanced and complex sweet rum. Fruity-nutty on the nose, woody-vanilla on the palate. Not as sweet as the scent suggests, quite long finish. A really good Caribbean rum, clear buying recommendation.

My RumRatings review from 6 years ago: The Malecon is very interesting on the nose without being intrusive. Nutty woody notes with caramel are in the glass. On the palate it is immediately spicy and aromatic. Indeed it remains nutty and the long aging is noticeable. Oak notes, chocolate and tropical fruits make the rum full-bodied, complex and interesting. The sharpness of the rum is overall well integrated. The finish is first creamy sweet and then caught by woody slightly smoky notes. The Malecon is a good sweet rum. The sweetness is certainly partly added. But it also has nutty woody aromas. 25 years for so little money is suspicious and makes you doubt what exactly is in the bottle. But it fits for me here. Only more alcohol could it tolerate. For me it remains special because after a few years in which I consumed little to no rum, it reopened the door and I then really went deep into the rum rabbit hole and have since stayed in Wonderland.

Sample received from a whisky friend. Had some very bad experiences in the past with the sweeter style rums, but luckily this one was better than expected. Rather thin on the palate, but the vanilla, sweet flavours are OK without tasting overly artificial.

The Cuban rum character is evident. Smooth and round. Lovely notes of caramel, wood and spices on the nose that never let up. These notes are echoed on the palate, with smoothness and roundness. Not a lot of fruit, but a caramel side that pleasantly invades the palate. The finish is not very expressive, a simple continuity of the palate that fades rather quickly.

Taste heavy, round, rather sweet, woody, fruity and balanced, with cocoa notes. Great nose and barely pungent alcohol. Multilayered but not too complex. Just delicious and not too sweet. I have the new bottle (2021) and it doesn't say anything about the "Cuban process" like on the old bottles. I hope the rum has not been changed.

Tasted again today, with direct comparison to the younger brother, the Malecon Imperial 18 years. The younger tastes lighter, less complex. I the rum class!

This is one of those central american Rums that at least try to distinguish themself with some sort of flavor. This on rather manages itself good to create this really distinct dryness in character and comes along with dry wood and coffee aroma. I can understand why.
