"Smoky, salty and funky" is how one taster nails it — this young J.M leans on heavily charred casks for burnt-sugar, peaty, whisky-like notes over a grassy agricole base. Several people call it a rum-meets-peated-whisky crossover. Others find it a bit young and chaotic, and a few barely catch the smoke at all. At 49% it reads dry and spicy.

Tasted this rum together with the other two releases in the Atelier series out in my summer house in the Stockholm archipelago. This one is the one year old Fumée Volcanique and it’s really living up to its name just as the other two. The nose is soft, salty and very smoky with aromas of butter, caramel, lime and honey. At the palate it’s intense, smooth, spicy and very smoky with flavors of honey and anise. The finish is rather long.

I bought this rhum as a cocktail rum when it was released few years ago and now i am going to taste it. On the nose: Light. Agricole and sugarcane notes with little bit of citrus notes. Slightly alcoholic. Charred barrel notes are on the background. Taste: Light, little bit alcoholic. Agricole notes, sweet sugarcane notes. Charred barrel notes or slightly peated notes. Finish: Sugarcane notes, light woody notes, light smoky/charred notes. Light citrus notes. Dry. Maybe i could put this in cocktails, but its quite plain as a sipper.

A wood-aged rum for cocktails. The barrels in which this cuvée rests have been tampered with, immediately bringing out the empyreumatic notes on the nose. The smokiness, even burnt, of the barrels comes through, as do marshmallow, caramel and toasted almonds. Spices combine with empyreumatic notes to mark a relatively youthful profile. Tropical fruits, including coconut, take pride of place in this promisingly aromatic nose. On the palate, smoky, spicy notes dominate without moderation. Burnt sweetness, vanilla, nuts and a touch of alcohol (Armagnac) make up the bulk of the profile. Fruit is much more in the background. A more concentrated, simplistic profile on the palate. The rather brief finish blends woody, spicy and empyreumatic notes with more grassy and agricultural ones. A certain bitterness emanates on the finish. If the nose announced something innovative, the rest of the profile remains more summary and limited by the low degree and rather succinct aging. A more mature cuvée with this type of profile might be interesting. Nevertheless, this remains a good rum, particularly for bars and cocktails, to which it will add character.

At the smell, fruit first, then wood. A bit the same on the palate: lots of alcohol, wood and fruits but I'm still looking for the smoky side. It gains finesse with aeration and reveals itself much more pleasant after a few minutes at room temperature.

Man Man Man, this has power. Very spicy on the nose, funnily enough I experienced a lot of molasses aroma here. On the taste a battle of titans: spice, wood and agricole freshness. Quite a long finish, the longest in the series. Taste-wise a bit chaotic for me - but very true to the name!

8,1:On the nose, rum reveals notes of smoke/volcanique scents and roasting that remain quite subtle and allow the agricultural rum to stand out. The ripe cane is present as well as dried fruits, raisins. The whole is simply laid down on a well roasted woody note. A pretty jam of various yellow fruits, citrus, starts to stick to our nostrils, before the apricot takes the lead. 8,1,:On the palate palate, it is fresh and fluid on the attack, with a nice ray of sunshine from the cane juice, mineral, syrupy with yellowfruits.Then, the spices with vanilla, pepper and wood with a touch of resin, quickly take over the palate, stinging it with fiery clouds that then rise up in smoke. You can actually taste a vulcano! The pepper takes advantage of this to spread its flavours in all dimensions, until it intoxicates us with its intensity. 8:The finish is quite light, dry, spicy, but long, compared to the lively mid-palate, raspberry is the leading fruit. This rum is a great example of real smoky rums, not just by name, it is not ment just for cocktails, but also for enjoying it neat-sipping..

Upon opening, immediately the aroma of sea salt and lime, reminiscent of tequila, very young, unformed agricole, the taste is grassy agricole and not very impressive, the aftertaste is also not great, I don't recommend this rum, it falls far behind others from J.M

The JM volcanic smoke rum is not an aged or expensive rum and yet I dive into it with pleasure... the pleasure of a pure cane juice rum with such a vegetal and natural taste... but obviously it is the volcanic smoke that refines its character... it's woody... of a blackened wood... for a moment I projected myself into my grandparents' country house. A house with wooden floors and massive furniture... a rum that makes you travel... a rum that creates images... a good rum... that's what I expect from a rum! That and the desire to go back! Let's go!!! Ciao!

Agricole grass aroma is bigger here than the Garden Fruits and Creole spices. Light golden. Caramel, vanilla. A slight aroma of vegetable. Sweet and spicy. I don't get that smoke vibe I get from Terroir Volcanique, which was something special. 7.3

Very classic delicate Agricole in the nose. Subtle oak. Olive. Chamomille. Lemon. All good so far. The taste does not surprise me either. All those flavours come back fair and square. Very dry. Very drinkable. And a very well priced quality agricole. Nothing "fumee/smoky" btw. Must be a reference to the volcanic soil only. Retaste: light and fresh and minerally. Still good.

Ok, next Martinique Agricole. Nose: light intensity. But very interesting. Menthol, eucalyptus, mint. Little bit of smoke, banana, apricots, flowers, herbals, licorice, black tea. Really good. Taste: harshly, full bodied spirit. Smoke, roots, tea, iodine, rubber, apricots, apples, black pepper & ginger. Little less mint & eucalyptus. Young, but not bad. Finish: medium, dry. Spicy, earthy, little metallic & herbs. So, it's quite interesting rum, for this price, but not a dream. You can buy it, if you want some experiment. Aroma - strong side of this one.

Аромат: очень яркий аромат тростника с копчёным нотами, аромат лимонада, перечные дымные ноты, очень яркие травяные ноты которые очень напоминают текилу. Вкус: сладкий, травяной копчённый вкус, полностью продолжающий нос. Среднее травяной послевкусие с горечью. Да, такого рома я ещё не пил. Обожённые бочки определённого дают аромат и вкус. А с учётом того что это ром один из 3х в коктельной линейке, то это очень интересно. Вот такой наверное должен быть Мексиканский ром, т.к. вслепую я бы точно сказал что это выжержанная в бочке текила. Только сладость с горечью на послевкусии выдаёт основу сахарного тростника. Но именно как ром мне такое не зашло совсем. Aroma: very bright reed aroma with smoked notes, lemonade aroma, peppery smoky notes, very bright herbal notes that are very reminiscent of tequila. Taste: sweet, herbal smoked taste, completely extending the nose. Medium herbal aftertaste with bitterness. Yes, I haven't drunk such rum yet. Burnt barrels of a certain give aroma and taste. And considering that this rum is one of the 3 in the cocktail line, it is very interesting. That's probably what Mexican rum should be, because blindly I would definitely say that it is aged in a barrel of tequila. Only sweetness with bitterness on the aftertaste gives out the basis of sugar cane. But it was as a rum that I did not go at all.

Mild Agricole with a restrained smokiness, which I would rather call spiciness. Everything very balanced, I can't detect the 49%. Good sipping rum, but lacks depth and aftertaste.

On the nose burnt sweetness seasoned with hazelnuts. On the palate very vegetal burnt seasoned with a hazelnut and vegetal sweetness. Persistent and decisive finish. In the empty glass burnt sweetness.

Good for cocktails (dark and stormy?!) to find a smoky subtlety. Too young to enjoy the wood. Associating "Rhum J.M" and "rhum agricole" prominently on the label while it doesn't respect the AOC bothers me a bit personally... Not really the markers of a true Martinican agricole... The goal being mixology, the mission is well accomplished but without honors. 🙂🙂

Nice gift to offer for a peated whisky lover. It offers a new palette. Neither unbreakable nor really a whisky but a rum. A flavor to taste at least once because it offers a new taste.
