Artificial orange, honey and vanilla hit first, with a little chili heat on the back — this is the Don Papa Masskara, infused with calamansi, siling labuyo and Kanla-on honey. Beginners who like it very sweet call it "Christmas in a bottle"; more experienced tasters find the orange candy note too artificial and say it drinks closer to a liqueur than a rum. Loud, sugary, and divisive.

21.12.2025 Having a friend over who is not up to the heavier stuff, so we run through a few lighter rums. ---------- This is a very sweet and fruity rum and I would recommend it for dessert actually. It also does really well in a Rum'n'Coke and over Chocolate Icecream.

Not really for fans of unsweetened rum, because this one has been heavily sweetened. Honey, caramel, chili - interesting combination. Still, the artificial aftertaste dominates and due to the huge amount of added sugar, it should be classified as a liqueur.

No rum at all. Much too short-breathed Lots of orange and citrus aroma (reminiscent of candied lemon peel in Christmas baking) which comes across as absolutely artificial. too far away from a natural rum. Unnatural, intense sweetness.

This rum is really very sweet and the aroma is really very pronounced, even quite artificial. Lots of citrus. On the palate mainly citrus with honey, big sweetness, and the chili burn at the end was quite pleasant. For me, a bit better than the Baroko version, but overly sweet.

Don Papa you either love or hate, I like DP and my favorite is the old DP 7y. I also like the 10y, less sweet, more spicy and all in a nice black. The Baroko disappointed me, tasted only sweet and mild, hardly tasted anything else. Now tried the Masskara with excitement and was positively surprised. Fruity and sweet, I like that. I taste orange and vanilla, but there is also something sharp or spicy. I now have to compare the old DP 7y (Small Batch) and the new DP 7y (Single Island), then I'll know if I have a new favorite with the Masskara :-) Currently available for about 50 euros, so still reasonably affordable. I also have the Sherry Cask and Port Cask but you probably only treat yourself to those once in a lifetime 😊

Good artificial rum. It smells extremely sweet and like grated orange peel. What you smell, you also taste. The sharpness is pleasant and not too strong. In the finish, a chili-like sharpness and citrus notes remain.

This has nothing to do with rum by any stretch of the imagination. The extremely penetrating orange / syrup notes cover everything. Pure artificial product. Smells and tastes like lax Fanta.

The Don Papa Masskara is super soft and sweet with lots of vanilla, honey, and orange. Tastes almost exotic and is really pleasant to drink. Delicious neat or on ice if you like sweeter rum. Actually the perfect entry rum for drinking neat.

Love it or hate it. Personally, I loved this rum, which is both easy to drink and surprising for a novice connoisseur. Round, sweet sugar, notes of caramel and honey. Just the way I like it.

6,2:On the nose, we discover a well-rounded liqueur, full of orange peel and pulp, but also generously enhanced with vanilla. A little cherry bubblegum develops over time, followed by a hint of herbal spice. 6:On the palate, we find our orange liqueur, syrupy, spiced up with a spicy edge that makes the taste buds sparkle, but quickly calms down. This is followed by tangy flavors and a round, sweet sensation, reminiscent of lemon sweets. 5,7:The finish is syrupy, medium, very sweet, sugary note dominates, other stuff quickly wanes... Very sweet it is....

I'm a beginner and therefore like sweet rums. This spirit drink is very sweet, too sweet to still be a rum. The artificial orange is very prominent, both on the nose and on the palate. Otherwise just very sweet :-) I find it quite good at first but think you can easily get used to the taste.

Very sweet nose, marzipan, vanilla, gummy bears, seems very artificial to me.... It's for sweet rum lovers, I imagine it for mixing with cola or cocktails, but for pure enjoyment it's too sweet and too artificial, you have to like it...

Blind tasted. Alcohol not integrated on the nose and oversweet. I never judge a book by its cover but this one was just awful. Only at 5 am, frozen, shots when you are wasted. F%#* NO!

Phew, I'm almost lost for words. Smells like Milk and Honey soap or bath additive or, as already mentioned here, Campino Orange & Cream sweets. The stuff is absolutely artificial and super sweet. Selling this almost borders on assault.

In this gloomy Christmas, I wanted to end lunch in style with this fantastic Filipino rum. It did not disappoint my expectations: you can clearly taste the honey which creates a pleasant contrast with the chili (siling labuyo), a typical chili from the Philippines. I recommend it to those who love sweet rums suitable to warm up a cold winter afternoon. Ps. A special mention goes to the bottle label, which, as is Don Papa's tradition, also gives an artistic touch to the rum.

Don Papa Masskara is not a spirit you can recommend. Everything about it feels artificial—the smell, the taste, and in the end, you even get a completely out-of-place chili note. I don't understand people who actually like it.

Tasting on 18.07.2026 RX 33 Don Papa. Nose: Full-bodied, very sweet and rounded aroma. Lots of orange peel, syrup. Light citrus. Palate: Orange liqueur, slightly spicy edge, a bit of fresh peach. A bit heavy floral note. Lots of orange peel. The aftertaste has a bit of sweet caramel, orange peel, a little sweet caramel, lightly spiced with a hint of citrus. Glass: Orange peel and lightly spiced. Tasting “In the kitchen”

Well, it wouldn't be anything else at Rewe and I thought it can't be as bad as the reviews say but it really is the worst so far that I've had. It's sweet, not like A.H. Riise but clearly sweet, artificial, gluey, no idea I think chewing gum or Haribo dissolved in alcohol. 1 star only because it's alcohol, otherwise from rum it's very far off. Could have saved myself the 35 euros 🤣.

I had to force myself to taste this insulin shock. Its prominent level of sugar and honey just from the scent is definitely a warning sign to me, but I fully accept I’m not the target group. It’s more like a tropical cocktail, but not even close to a rum rather a Spritz or so. Anyway, the bottle design is impressive as always for Don Papas.

Don Papa Masskara is an infused rum made from molasses derived from sugarcane grown on Negros Island, Philippines. Once the rum is produced, it is mixed with an infusion distilled like a gin. The infused ingredients are local: calamansi (a kind of lime), small siling labuyo chili peppers, and honey from Mount Kanla-on. This edition pays tribute to a Filipino festival of the same name held annually since 1980 on Negros Island. This event is nicknamed the “Festival of Smiles.”

Smell and taste are very sweet with citrus fruits and honey, but very artificial. As one of the first rums, good for "getting started," but once you've tried others, you won't buy this anymore.

Reminds me of the Ed von Schleck ice cream from childhood. If you like this calamansi/orange note, it's well integrated. For me, it's not my thing. The orange flavor completely overpowers the actual rum.
