A tasting with four 1997 Caronis, all having the typical dirty Caroni style very intensely. The alcohol is very well integrated in all. The Bristol falls a bit short as it is rather restrained on the palate and relatively short in the finish. Also simpler than the others. The V&M is very fruity dirty and feels palate-pleasing, almost elegant compared to the others. Still very dirty, as if someone stepped into a deep oil puddle on their way to the prom with their jacket. The Rum Cask is on the palate a different league than the previously mentioned, voluminous and full of power, starting with a red fruit somewhat sour hint of aromas. The finish is medium to long like the other two. The best for last. The Berry Bros is clearly my favorite here. Voluminous, very complex, dirty, and extremely fruity at the same time with an eternally long finish! For me, the best 1997 I've had in the glass so far. Awesome piece!

This bottle is pretty expensive now, but being able to sample it while on a relaxing trip to The Netherlands won't blast too big a hole in my wallet. This one has to rest for a good while or it will bite you and burn your eyes. Also try with water to release even more flavours. The nose is alcoholic before resting but the the Caroni comes to life with rubber, tar and petrol trailed by fruit, chocolate and a hint of wood and molasses. The palate is intense, complex and well balanced, warm and lightly woody with molasses, fruit, chocolate and tobacco as well as a hint of spices. The finish is forever with wood, rubber and tar as well as a jmhint of caramel.

A nose of beautiful, very ripe tropical fruit, old oak, smoke, old leather and a sweet, pastry side with vine peach. The palate is splendid, complex and deep. All the aromas of the nose come together in harmony. The finish is balanced and long. One of the best Caronis of 1997 for my taste.

Strong '97 Caroni with classic, dark aromatics. On the nose tar, rubber, spicy wood and a bitter fruit note. On the palate dry, intense and pleasantly dirty, accompanied by dark fruit, spice and a slightly bitter edge that fits well into the overall picture. The 60% carries the profile cleanly and gives depth. Overall a convincing representative of the vintage with clear Caroni DNA and good complexity.

Deep gold robe, with nice legs. Nose of rubber, pretty round and easy, and as it opens up, cloves, tobacco, smokiness. Taste is very whisky like on the onset, peated almost, but round. Very long finale Overall very nice and quite sophisticated

1997 cross-tasting of continentally aged releases: Pleasant, nice complex profile. Present alcohol that doesn't bother. Nice caramel note, oak wood, HTR notes. Very good.

I've now had this Caroni in the glass for the third time and have to write a comment. For me one of the fruitiest Caronis from 1997. The typical tar and rubber notes are in balance with the fruit notes that push to the foreground here. The finish is surprising and you enjoy every sip longer than other Caronis. It's a pity this rarity's bottle will soon be empty.
