A fine benchmark for agricultural rums. More complex and rounder than the VSOP, its aromas draw on spices, wood and tobacco, mixed with fruity notes. Dry but round on the palate, the finish is warm and very pleasant. A clear success.

The taste is less aggressive than many other Agricole’s. I would even say that it’s rather mild at same time that it’s very elegant. A perfect entrance to the Agricole world. The aromas and flavors is fruity, spicy and woody with citrus, pepper, cinnamon and oak clearly recognizable.

A very nice surprise, a rum with depth, balance and punch despite its low ABV. A very good quality-price ratio. Certainly it is not a great rum, but it comes close. Super pleasant!

Just another winner in terms of price/quality. I could definitely keep a bottle of this at home. Good vegetal notes with yellow fruit and young woody notes. A good entry-level rum. The finish is medium long.

8,5:On the nose, the first impression is nice and tempting, as it is very round, complex. There are vanilla, dried fruits(raisin and prune), the wood is dry, some orange peel, spices and a touch of flowers and tea. After airing, tobacco notes are present, as sugar cane is very juicy, earthy, mineral. 8,5:On the palate, the attack is soft, waxy and spicy, with earthy juicy sugar cane, mineral, volcanique and pepper.Citrus fruits, dried fruits, tea, dry wood, some nuts and vanilla take over the palate, very round and tasty, as the cane becomes more honeyed. 8,4:The finish is long, woody, dry, slightly bitter,with warm spices, vegetal and floral, tea rounds it up very nicely, as cane is still juicy. Very nice agricole XO at a fair price-performance ratio. Not too dry and woody and not too vegetal, very pleasant and balanced. Especially works really well in Donga Punch and Espresso Martini, I think.

Average rum nose. Rather woody would be my only real note. The palate is a little like whiskey, lots of wood and a little spice, but, not so much that it's off putting for me. A touch of cocoa and cherry keeps things nice. It has a long finish that plays with being similar to a whiskey again. With lots of peppery and leather notes. Not a bad rum at all. For me, at that price. I think I'd prefer something else. Something more fruit forward.

A reverence for Martinican agriculture for non-experts! Back to the oak barrel, the typical spices on the nose, on the palate.... In short, I love it! Even if I've tasted much better, for an XO that's available everywhere! It's still very good!

Wow, a great Agricole from Rhum J.M. I really like it right now. Great nose, we have vanilla, wood and spices here. On the palate it continues. Again vanilla, wood and spices, also slightly peppery.

Rhum agricole with a lot of depth. It is very spicy, almost peppery, the tannin from the XO is felt, with a certain bitterness. But a sweet pleasure takes over, on beautiful cane notes.

It is not a typical Rhum Agricole but picks up some of the expected notes. The nose is sweet and inviting, deep orange peel and tangerine with grass and elderflower. The mouth is pleasant if not unassuming, green pepper and hay combined with some pear and fruits. Finish is short, dry with notes of leather. I thought I would like it more than I did - a solid middle of the road Rhum Agricole that doesn’t try to do too much.

I reviewed this after quite some time, and the Rum had ample time to breathe (as the bottle was half empty for the year), and was quite astonished: either the rum changed (for the better), or my taste improved. I guess it is both. This time I got much more the vegetal notes attributed to Agricoles, which compliments the overall experience very well.

Like a perfectly matured Pinot Noir. Soft cherry, complex, strong wood tones, coriander, cinnamon, and tobacco shimmer through repeatedly. Surprisingly strong in the mouth after the soft nose. Besides the previously known aromas, now an unusual abundance of spices appears - fennel, cumin. Bitterness. Finish of dry grass and wood. Very dry, but also very balanced.

This XO differs from other Martinique XOs by stronger sugarcane/caramel notes in the nose. The fruit component on the nose is complex. On the palate, it is really very dry and spicy, which is not a particularly pleasant experience for me. At least it gives sweet sugarcane as well as other pleasant notes like coffee, vanilla, and fruit.

My top recommendation for an entry-level Agricole. There must always be a bottle of this at home. Great nose with lots of fruit and considerable wood influence (caramel, vanilla, spices). In the finish, peppery with the recurring fruitiness at the end with a slight mint eucalyptus association.

After 40 days without a drink, time for some action. This gets 80 points out of 160 reviews, so I’m not going to mess with it. I like it, it has a nice balance, is not overly sweet and still a good kick to it for only 45%. With that being said, my system probably needs a couple of sessions to get used to some higher ABV’s. This is a nice benchmark to broaden my agricole horizons and it makes for an excellent starting point for this part of my rum journey. Cheers 🥃

Its color is a warm gold leaning towards amber. On the nose, it's well made and engaging. Vanilla, dried fruits (raisin and prune) and butter caramel bring gourmandise. The woodiness (dry), citrus (orange zest), spices (pepper) and a touch of white flowers bring complexity and relief. The alcohol seems to be at the perfect degree in this rum and further accentuates the impression of balance. After a bit of rest, notes of tobacco appear. On the palate, the attack is relatively soft (without being sweet), then the alcohol shows itself but without excess. Citrus, dried fruits, wood and vanilla take the forefront for a palate less complex than the nose. The finish is long and dominated by this woodiness, still dry and very slightly bitter. It always leaves this warm impression, although the barrel takes more and more space until it pushes out the other aromas, which were already struggling to be noticed on this finish. Meine RumRatings Review von vor 5 Jahren: Der dunkel braune Rhum ist in der Nase herrlich würzig. Grasig frisch kommen viele Aromen zur Geltung. Limette, Vanille, Backgewürze, etwas Minze, aber auch Frucht sind deutlich erkennbar. Absolut fantastisch. Am Gaumen ist der Rhum nie scharf. Der Alkohol trägt wunderbar die Aromen. Florale Noten, Bourbon und etwas gebranntes Karamel sind wunderbar am harmonieren. Die Süße ist dezent aber nie im Vordergrund. Der Rhum is eher würzig. Aber nie bitter. Vollmundig bleiben die Aromen sehr lange stehen und der Rhum bleibt überraschend lange mit einem deutlichen Geschmacksprofil im Mund erhalten. Der JM XO ist ein toller Agricole. Die 45% sind hier genau richtig und der JM ist für unter 50Euro zu haben. Ich kann den Rhum nur empfehlen. Auch sehr gut geeignet um in die Welt des Agricoles einzusteigen.

Very very good surprise! A fruity nose of blackcurrant peach (vanilla of course). A palate that does not disappoint with the expected aromas, then a wave of spices, a combo of nutmeg and pepper, before descending to a very long and delicate note of red fruits. Top notch.

Description: The J.M XO rum is a very old agricole AOC Martinique rum, produced by the J.M distillery at Habitation Bellevue, in Macouba, in the north of the island, at the foot of Mount Pelée. This exceptional volcanic terroir, combined with a humid tropical climate, gives the sugarcane a unique aromatic richness. The distillery, founded in 1790 and bought in 1914 by the Crassous de Médeuil family, perpetuates a centuries-old tradition by mastering the entire production process, from cane cultivation to bottling. The rum is made from fresh cane juice (vesou), crushed less than an hour after cutting to preserve all its freshness. It is then distilled in 72% copper Creole columns. The rum ages at least six years in ex-bourbon oak barrels, selected and reconditioned after being charred inside and aged in a tropical climate. J.M is one of the few distilleries in Martinique to use pure spring water from Mount Pelée for rum reduction, contributing to its quality. The J.M XO, bottled at 45% vol, is the result of a blend of old rums, selected for their balance and elegance. Recognized worldwide, it won the Gold Medal at the Brussels World Competition in 2011 and 2012 and a Silver Medal at the Paris Agriculture Show in 2011. Conclusion: bought at 74 euros (discounted from 91€) I rather got ripped off... because I found it at argmanac.de for about 61€ (without discount). Do I regret buying the bottle? No, even though these are not the aromas I tend to taste daily, but tasting again from time to time will be a great pleasure because I have a good "come back to it". Do I recommend it? Yes. It can be a nice gift.

Starts of with a big caramel note on the nose. Smells round balanced and complex with typical grassy agricol notes, fruity notes and sweet caramel notes asking for your attention. It tastes more peppery than the nose suggests. It is quite woody and astringent towards the finish. Not bad at all but I might prefer the VSOP.

Received this as a retirement gift from a friend. Agricoles are not my first choice in rums, but I liked this one. Sweet, without a burn when enjoyed straight up. Less earthy than many of them usually are. Straight was better than mixed.
