Oak, vanilla and toasted spice up front, with peaches and orange peel underneath and a dirty tar-and-rubber streak that had blind tasters guessing Caroni. This 20-year Mount Gay pot-still is dry, woody and intense, more savory than sweet. The recurring gripe: at 53.2% the alcohol pokes through and never fully settles. Give it time and water in the glass.

Slightly bitter wood notes meet a pleasantly sweet fruit mix. On the nose, I think a bit of Cointreau. For a better rating, the alcohol should not be so noticeable in the finish.

This tastes quite hot, I had this blind and believed it to be a younger one... the roughness really irritated and took away some fun. There is also almost no sweetness. During tasting I had the thought: "hm, banana", but could not really find again the source of this impression. This one could improve with some water added.

Here again a nice bottling from S.B.S. This time a Mount Gay. Nose consists of wood, vanilla and caramel, also very alcoholic. On the palate then nice tropical fruits come in. A long finish where herbs dominate.

I like this bottling better than the TRC... it is very woody and intense on the palate ! The nose is very fruity and fresh. It needs time in the glass, but then it is a pleasure

RumXmas, day 6 Tried this one about a year ago and scored it 67, guess it didn’t really impress me back then. I like it somewhat better today, but still not really a fan. I miss “big” flavors. I find it mostly dry and peppery and the alcohol could be incorporated better… So far not the biggest fan of Mount Gay 🤷♂️

RumX Advent calendar, 08.12.2021, blind. First impression: A bit of glue (type Guyana/Barbados, not the one from Jamaica), but also very fruity. Maybe Jamaica? With more time in the glass some forest honey and mint, rather inappropriate, but another country? On the palate dry, bitter-salty, almost dull. Resinous-woody with some menthol and mint. Suddenly also some dirt and tar, plus bitter almond. Doesn’t fit Jamaica. Maybe Trinidad? The longer it is in the glass, the more it transforms. Because of the different directions, I would have guessed a blend. But it wasn’t, all the bigger the surprise.

RumX Advent calendar, 6.12., blind Once again no clear assignment achieved. First impression Guyana, or maybe Jamaica, perhaps a Clarendon? A Navy blend would also be possible… Nose: sweet-spicy, fruity with Pritt glue stick. Not clear, but something between apricot/peach and mandarin/cherry with mealy banana. Dark forest honey and very slight vinegar and mint too. Palate: clearly dry and bitter-salty. Some harsh grapefruit and quite woody. Slightly minty and umami at the back. At the end, a pleasant light tar note lingers. Once again a nice surprise and the realization that the rum journey is far from over…

At first quite sharp alcohol, which luckily dissipates after a few minutes. Then come wood barrel, vanilla, caramel and yellow fruits. All somehow not particularly intense. On the palate very strong cask influence, very roasted, in the background a note that reminds me of white peach. The finish is quite dry.

Honey golden; nice thick legs coming down on the glass Nose: mild glue/acetone, with a pinch of wood and yellow fruits in the background (apple and peaches possibly).As time goes by and the oxygen does its thing, I get more nutty flavors, as well as more prominent citrus fruits. Mouth: definitely more fruity, again with peaches and orange peels upfront…there are some spices coming along (vanilla from the barrel I guess, and maybe ginger). Finish: medium, with orange peels and dried fruits.

6th sample in the RX Advent calendar. Focus on wood and roasted aromas. Nut, vanilla, and spices. There is also a dirty note (workshop) that reminds me of a Caroni. Alcohol is well integrated – mild. Overall, these are not the aromas that appeal to me.

Exciting start on the nose, lots of yellow fruit, vanilla, also a bit of solvent. Promising. On the palate: again plenty of yellow fruit, I detect peach but also citrus. Plus caramel. Underlaid by a slight bitterness that remains in the finish. Unfortunately, the finish is only short and mostly dry and woody. Definitely an interesting Mount Gay.

6.12.21 RumX Advent Calendar: First on the nose I had marzipan, then a good portion of fruit. The fruits are also very present on the palate. Combined with depth and quite dirty notes, a pretty good rum. Alcohol, however, too present. Blind, I was most likely at a Clarendon. On the finish, I briefly thought of the Guildive WIRD. It was my first Mount Gay. Gladly again sometime 😁

The nose is typical of the Barbados terroir: honeyed, vanilla and, above all, coconut! It's very pastry-like, with notes of cocoa and mocha. All sprinkled with spices. The nose is very charming and makes you want to dive in. On the palate, as with the Guyana, the alcohol isn't very well integrated; it's too vigorous-bodied on tasting. When the palate gets used to it, we find notes of tropical fruit, vanilla, molasses and smoky tobacco. The finish is long, with menthol and woody/spicy notes.
