TBRC T.D.L Fernandes 1999

Anyone who likes the wilder, mentholated side of Trinidad will feel at home here. Cool menthol and eucalyptus lead, with light rubber, cocoa, wood and overripe tropical fruit behind them. It's not one of the sweet, caramel TDLs — drier, herbal, a touch smoky and earthy. At 57.4% the alcohol mostly sits well, though a few tasters find it perches on top and pricks the nose.

Excellent value for money. A very good T.D.L. of its kind. On the nose, a beautiful crème brulée, a lovely woodiness, a variety of dried fruits. Some toasted oilseeds. Menthol that evolves into camphor. A lively attack, with spices, exotic fruits, lots of lychee, overripe peach, kumkat, more menthol, a nice freshness. Medium to long finish. The empty glass is light and mentholated for a long time after tasting. Maj: lost a point after tasting other TDLs (Nobilis rum caksus, Samaroli 1999, cadenhead 19 ans, compagnie des Indes x bar 1802 19 ans...)

This TDL is not one of the sweet, caramel ones like the ORS 2003, but neither is it a purebred dirty TDL of the 2001-2003 vintages. The nose is yellow-fruited with smoky herbal notes. Not so dissimilar to some of the 2003s, but less mint and less depth. The alcohol sits a bit uncomfortably on top of the flavors. In the mouth it is more intense than on the nose with similar flavors, the smokiness comes through even more clearly and brings almost something like a grain whiskey note. Although the rum is certainly more complex than the sweet, dark Trinidads, I don't really like it any better. It's already the exciting, dirty TDL profile, but I don't enjoy the barrel.

The color - well yellow - light The nose- herbal tones with woody and tropical fruits The taste - I mostly feel minty tones and the rest is behind - but of course - wood( cocoa), esters (like rubber) and fruits again. Sometimes it’s little bit harsh alcoholic… To sum up - good rum for good price, it’s like Jamaica, but with more minty tones..in blind degustation I would say Jamaica, but..wait a second..menthol..and it’s Trinidad

Soft with dried fruit, wood and leather. Also some ethanol, but within limits. Slightly minty and dirty notes make it interesting.

The mint only appears after some time in the glass. Otherwise, the sweet aromas are more dominant on the nose. This cocoa note is striking here, something I've never had before. Mint immediately appears on the palate, otherwise also rather herbal aromas. Chocolate can only be faintly sensed in the background here. Very nice and creamy in the mouth. I like it, PLV is top.

Stings quite in the nose, alcohol is not perfectly integrated. On the tongue first smoky sweetness, leather and wood. In the finish then amazing mint, light menthol influences, very wild and edgy, not too round. Fun, for once is not one that wants to be everybody's darling but comes along boorishly

I like it very much. A Trinidad that doesn't overwhelm and yet has all the superficial trademarks such as mint/menthol/eucalyptus paired with citrus fruits, light spiciness and a hint of earth/smoke/petrol. You can put it in your home bar, P/L is top.

Found one last sample remainder. In conclusion, a really good bargain for the price at the time with high quality, which was not to be expected. Edit: I still like it and it has a very good PLV. Very pleasing rum at a real bargain.

Angostura is famous for a bottle most people never drink neat. The bitters house founded in 1824 became Trinidad's only rum distillery, and its arm Trinidad Distillers makes a clean, column-distilled, Spanish-style rum unlike the heavy funk of Jamaica or Guyana. The same plant still guards the secret recipe for the world's most famous cocktail bitters.
