Not the fresh, minty Trinidad you might expect from a 2003 TDL — this one leans caramel and toffee first, with one taster comparing the nose to a Foursquare. Underneath sit yellow fruits, peanut butter, cocoa and a faint mint on the finish, plus the odd Caroni-ish whiff of workshop and PVC. At 63.1% the alcohol stays present; give it plenty of air.

Very mysterious rum. A T.D.L but after a longer time in the glass the Caronino notes come out easily. I'm torn as to whether I think it's a great rum or just average. But right now the wacky outweighs the average. But it needs a long time in the glass, then the alcoholic taste gradually disappears. Tasted another 2003 Samaroli and Nobilis. In my opinion, this one is not at all comparable to these profiles. It somehow picks me up. Edit: went through the obligatory CubaLibre test again. I still find it interesting. A slightly different flavor than Mixer, but a pretty good one. I like the taste. More like the slightly dirty CubaLibre.

Interestingly, the toffee note dominates here at first, before the tropical fruits and some mint are added on the palate. Interesting, aromatically versatile, but without the freshness of other TDLs from the 2000s, as the toffee flavors mentioned at the beginning and the alcohol are still too present.

More on the „classic“ column still side of things with roasted and dark notes in focus. Some dirt is present, yet not much in terms of fruits and/or herbal notes on the nose. While it feels a bit thin on the palate (tastewise) it is still quite alcohol forwards. While not devastatingly bad, this clearly is in the lower tier of early 2000s TDLs.

Quite straightforward and alcoholic on the nose. On the palate, lots of vanilla and a fairly dominant sweetness (burnt sugar?). The alcohol is quite present. Had I by the light mint associations and missing Caroni notes rather Ruchtung T.D.L packed.

Once again my big TDL cross-tasting. The Nobilis TDL 2003, the Kill Devil 13 yo 2003, the Tamosi 2003, the first TWJ 2003 19yo and the new WDC 22yo. We know that the Nobilis, Kill Devil and WDC come from 02/2003. For the others, the exact batch is unclear. Unfortunately, I'm missing one of the CDIs from April 2003 today - I assume the TWJ is from April. On the nose, the TWJ forms one side of the spectrum: full blast of fresh mint, juicy peach, some mango, minimal tea in the background. The Kill Devil forms the other side, reminiscent of the OR&S, nougat, caramel chocolate and dried fruits, heavy and sweet. The Nobilis is also on the Spanish side, but more yellow fruit like dried mango and peach. Very similar to the Tamosi, but a bit fruitier, less smoky. On the palate, the play repeats. In the TWJ the mint and juicy peach shine, in the Kill Devil there are nuts and dried fruit. The alcohol integration of the Kill Devil is not optimal. The Nobilis surprisingly brings a lot of menthol in black tea, heavier and dirtier than the nose suggested. In the finish, a rather sour citrus note surprises, the yellow fruits are also surprisingly juicy. Mint is hardly recognizable here, especially not in the intense freshness of the TWJ. The Nobilis is the only other one in the round that brings mint as a clear menthol note in the finish. The finishes of all rums are very nice, as there is no excessive bitterness and the fruit aromas remain long even in the Kill Devil. In the rating, I like the TWJ best, the Kill Devil falls off - but not below the level of the OR&S and the Swells. WDC, Tamosi and WDC are largely on par with slight advantages for the Tamosi. Very tasty all, but far from the top class of the vintage, the CDIs for 1802, Caksus or Premium Spirits.

On the nose, initially chemical in the direction of PVC soil / phenol, then later yellow fruit, baked goods, vanilla, plus light mentholated, dirty notes. Workshop, passion fruit and mocha on the palate. For me a TDL, but the 2003s I've had in my glass so far (Excellence Rhum, Whisky Jury) were much better.

05.01.2019 A very nice tasting event where I met new local rum nerds. Notes. Medium dark colour. Npse: wood, roasted, dried fruit, floral, citrus, mint. Palate: light, wood, sweet, citrus, chocolate, mint, caramel. Finish: medium long, sweet, wood, dried fruit, chocolate.

For me, more of a TDL with a Caroni note than a Caroni with TDL notes. Not top class, but still tastes good to me. It lacks some fruit on the nose.

Here we have a TDL that is a bit out of the ordinary. The nose is unusually caramel-like and rather reminds of a Foursquare. Everything else is quite light, yellow fruits, peanut butter, cocoa and at the very end a very little mint. The first palate contact is damn alcoholic, but it calms down with time. Lots of wood and burnt caramel follow, plus caramelized fruits, pepper and slight mint. The finish is quite long, woody, roasted and with menthol notes. Conclusion: unusual but quite good.
