Saint James XO Rhum Vieux Agricole

Anyone who leans toward the wood-forward side of agricole will feel at home here. This 10-year Saint James is all cedar, dried plum, tobacco and vanilla, with cocoa and pepper underneath. Give it plenty of air and it opens up. Several tasters call it a rounded, easy agricole; a few find the oak too dominant and the finish a touch dry and sharp.

  • Complex and balanced

The look inside the bottle

How does Saint James XO Rhum Vieux Agricole taste?

Aggregated from 94 community reviews.

Wood-forward, dried-fruit 10-year agricole Most find it a balanced, wood-heavy agricole that rewards resting in the glass. The catch: the oak can bury the cane fruit, and some read it as too dry and peppery.

Perfect for

Agricole drinkers who like wood, tobacco and dried fruit

Less suitable for

People who want bright, fruity cane and light oak

The "prototype Agricole". On the one hand complex vegetable-fruity profile, on the other extremely balanced and in this case positively "flat" profile.

You get a lot for your money here and I do recommend people to give it a try. I do know its not the top range but still a very good blend. Leave to rest for a while to get the full experience. The nose is fresh and intense with wood, vanilla and plum as well as light cocoa and roasted notes. The palate is well balanced with fruit, wood, vanilla, cocoa, tobacco and light nuts. The finish is medium to long with dried fruit, wood and chocolate. Leave the glass for a few hours and nose it again for even stronger flavours.

Nice nose, but a little too much on the tertiary aromas of the barrel. The fruitiness of the base juice has perhaps given way too much to the oak barrel. On the palate, it's still very woody and rather spicy, the pepper takes up a lot of space and the juice lacks roundness and deliciousness. The finish is moderately long but interesting, with some chocolate notes. Perhaps it should be enjoyed again with a gourmet cigar to counterbalance it.

Expert review by The Fat Rum Pirate

Aside from my immature (palate wise) comments regarding the Royal Ambre Rhum - a review which I urgently need to re-visit. As soon as I can get another bottle. Sadly supplies of that rhum are hard to come by. I'm really quite beginning to enjoy dipping into Agricole. Any further...

Saint James

Avg Rating 8.1/10 over 250 Rums

Saint-James is Martinique's biggest distillery and one of the oldest names in bottled rum, founded in 1765 and still selling a square bottle it trademarked in 1882. It holds the largest stock of aged rhum in the French Antilles, runs what may be the world's best distillation museum, and its old vintages and J. Bally bottlings are among the most loved Martinique rums on RumX.
