Carrere Montebello Vieux Rhum 2003
"A jolie surprise" is how one taster put it, and that fits: an 8-year Guadeloupe agricole that's oddly atypical, more yellow fruit and licorice than fresh grassy cane. Woody, peppery, a little spicy, with exotic fruit weaving through. A few find it light and slightly reduced, but most reach for it again with real pleasure. Warmer than its 42% suggests.

How does Carrere Montebello Vieux Rhum 2003 taste?
Aggregated from 35 community reviews.
Woody, licorice-tinged agricole with yellow fruit Most call it a pleasant, unexpectedly complex agricole for the money — woody, licorice-tinged, fruity. The main gripe: it can read a touch light and lacking structure.

Sehr elegant!

An alcoholic nose, a peaty palate with serious, complex notes, a hint of liquorice on a long finish. Definitely good stuff.
Review by Dim Itri
This Montebello 8-Year-Old has a rather light color, which is surprising given the years spent in cask, almost resembling an ESB. The first nose is very atypical for an agricole, resembling a molasses rum that has undergone a long fermentation. The first nose is clearly of yellow fruit, quince and mirabelle plum. The second nose is very delicate, with fine, light wood, lace and a hint of spice: divine! I could spend the whole evening smelling this nectar! On the palate, the attack is smooth and round, but the juice lacks structure, woodiness perhaps... It's rather disconcerting, like a young rum that's lost its fresh cane. The spices dominate with the alcohol, without being excessive. I was expecting much more complexity. The finish is average.

With a medium long finish you get a pretty good rum considering the price tag. The Agricole notes are there as well as light fruit and spices. I rally like the dry oily feel on the palate.
