Velier Clairin Communal Ansyen (Blend des quatre communes)

8.2/10
Rated by Mirko Frosini 🇮🇪, Galli33 & 109 more

Olives and banana in the same glass is the first thing that throws people here — this aged Haitian clairin blend is grassy, fruity and a little medicinal all at once. Expect sugarcane, ripe tropical fruit, a whiff of nail polish and some smoke. The 49.3% sits oily and well-integrated rather than hot. One taster nailed it: a "strange grassy, olive and banana mix."

  • Oily, integrated texture
  • Complex fruit and grass
  • No alcohol burn

In my opinion, at the moment, white clairins are much more interesting. The absolutely agreeable choice to age them is interesting, but still these rums fail to really take off. Certainly they have their own unmistakable imprint in the aromatic bouquet however, the work needs further improvement.

Very nice blend of clairins🤤😎 This in my opinion is more enjoyable, because it isn‘t so rough, wild, spicy like other white clairins. The alcohol and wood is integrated very well.

8,6:On the nose, it is full-bodied. There is a note of burnt rubber for a starter, as it is very fruity with strawberry, raspberry, banana, vegetal with honeysuckle, olive, thyme and vanilla. The fruits are really fermented, marmelade like. A lot of esters.... With an aeration, it becomes increasingly oily with an olive, herbal with some sage and verbena, camphor. The sugar cane juice is darker with some licorice also and with a whiff of smoke. Very complex and tempting. 8,6:On the palate, the hot attack is medicinal and musky, spicy. It becomes fibrous with sugar cane, licorice and herbal with mint. There is a note of umami. On the mid-palate, one fruit dominates, of course, banana. Then floral notes with geranium and lavender are covered with cocoa. At the end of the palate, banana is fried and caramelized, smoky, as the wood is young and dry. 8,5:The finish is long, flowery, woody and dry, honey and sugar cane are sweet. There are vegetal notes of artichoke with some lime and mint...

I may have a nasty cold, but that won't spoil my enjoyment of this awesome blend for the first time in a long time. Haiti is recognizable at first taste. Beautiful combination of fruit and grassy notes. The finish adds a Haitian smoked meat savoury wildness😃. For me, a very underrated hit. Edit: after a long time of retasting the shell sample and it's still a blast for me

#4993 22.12.2024 Enjoying some samples at home. Nose Faint wood, vegetal, grass, sugarcane, faint mint, light polish, light citrus. Palate Naturally sweet, light wood, light grass, sugarcane, light citrus, light mint, berries, light anise. Finish Long, lightly sweet, light wood, citrus, light grass, faint salt, light mint. The empty glass has light olive and a light floral note. Needs to rest for a while to really open up and settle properly.

I was advised by the barman when I tried this that is was rumoured that some of these Clairins have traces of lead in them due to the backyard home made style of stills that they have been produced on in Haiti, not sure of the truth of this but it sounded interesting 😄 havnt had many of these Clairins, and this is the first aged one I've had. Lead aside, I quite liked it, herbal and grassy, banana, some wood as well?

A perfect blend of Haitian flavors. The nose is rich, a touch opulent with its strong medicinal notes (esters, solvents, nail polish), herbal and vegetal notes but also ripe, exotic and fragrant fruitiness (pineapple, banana, apricot). A few spicy notes, a touch of sugarcane and a hint of dairy products make for a rather voluptuous aroma. A generous clairin for the nostrils. The attack on the palate is oily and highly perfumed. Ripe, tropical fruit (banana, pineapple) mingles with olive notes, sweet spices, herbs, earthy notes and a smoky edge. Sweet, lactic yoghurt notes give this profile quite a bit of roundness. The alcohol is well dosed at this level, demonstrating a fine balance. The finish is of decent length, with empyreumatic notes (smoke, rubber), spices (vanilla, pepper, chili, salt), herbs, earth and fruit (tomato, exotic fruit). The flavors are not the most intense, but remain imprinted on the palate. A lovely clairin offering a fine aromatic panel from its blend.

A rather sweet nose, banana, pineapple... woody and toasty notes. But the solvent odor can be disturbing. Very powerful on the palate. The alcohol could be better balanced, even if it's not disturbing. An interesting rum with a taste different from the smell.
