Expect roasted oak, black pepper, anise, nutmeg and vanilla, with only a faint thread of apricot and citrus underneath. Out of a small MG cross tasting: Rum Mercenary is the most lifely with some floral notes while the other three have a more similar profile. Rum Cask is very well balanced and approchable. RumClub feels the most intense with some funky notes. The Duchess is the most elegant out of the bunch and my personal winner.

Sweet fruit notes and milk chocolate dominate, but there is also something earthy on the nose and finish that doesn't really go with it.

8,4:On the nose, the first impression is very pleasant with roasted wood notes like nuts, especially hazelnut, chocolate, honey, spices like vanilla, cardamom, there are tropical fruits like toasted coconut, unripe banana, then dried apricots, red fruits and peaches. On aeration, the molasses is fresh, earthy and floral. More bourbon ageing notes are present, there are also some anise, nutmeg. 7,8:On the palate, the attack is quite intense and imbalanced with bitter, spicy wood notes like cardamom, pepper, nutmeg. The wood is roasted with nuts like almond, cream toffee, toasted coconut, citrus balance the chaos a bit, make the rum more fresh. Some rest doesn't help much as strong camphor arises and overpowers other notes.Pleasant notes like chocolate, banana, integral confectionery, flowery molasses stay underneath. 8,1:The finish is long, dry, with roasted, spicy wood notes, earthy, there is some soft tobacco, banana, dried apricot and a bit less intense camphor...

Nose nicely fruity and spicy. On the palate, however, very dry and cask-heavy. Quite complex but also noticeably alcoholic.

Tried again after a long time. Thanks to the sample from Jonas. For me still a very good Mount Gay bottling from TheRumCask. The price/performance ratio is once again more than justified here.

Comparaison de 3 Mount Gay 2000 hier soir avec deux amis : The rum mercenary : un nez très gourmand, sur la pâte d'amande et quelques fruits jaunes. Super agréable. La bouche est dans la ligne du nez sans surprise. Au final c'est bon mais ça manque un peu de complexité. The rum cask : aucun doute c'est vraiment le même rhum à peu de choses près. Ici le bois se fait plus de place au nez mais aussi en bouche, et entraine une finale un peu amère. Cela rend le nez plus sympa sur ce rhum. The duchess : on sent bien encore une fois qu'on est sur le même rhum mais le profil est plus boisé. Sauf que étonnement c'est mieux integré que sur le rum cask, plus équilibré et gourmand. Au final le meilleur des 3 pour nous hier soir.

Tried as a 2cl sample. From the smell right after pouring, I had associations with apple cider vinegar and smoked wood, followed by dried fruits and vanilla. Taste-wise, for a short moment fruits and slightly alcoholic, then a good portion of wood, quite bitter, but that fades fairly quickly. However, the profile is quite monotonous but lingers very long on the finish. I wouldn't buy a bottle for currently (07/02/2022) 77€/0.5l, but the sample was interesting.

We tasted four Mount Gay 2000 releases at the Rum-X Community Tasting. The tasting was very entertaining, but the rums only contributed a small part. Overall, the rums were super similar, with the differences being in the nuances. Personally, I don't like the profile as much, as it just lacks fruit. The Rum Cask is the most herbal of the round resin and gasoline otherwise, the is very similar to the rest from the batch. Fruit is hard to find here, at most lemon zest and some apricot in the background. Interestingly, I perceive the ums today anderss than in the community tasting before.This is particularly unfruity and perhaps the one I like the least well.

Exciting nose, would never have guessed Barbados. For me, glue is very dominant, paired with earthy notes and nutmeg. A fruity acidity is also there, reminiscent of currants, accompanied by an unripe banana. On the mouth, a mix of wood and spices. Tasty, but for me it doesn't match the nose and overall reminds me more of whisky than rum. Fruit and floral notes are almost completely missing. In the finish, a pleasant tobacco note appears.

Nice bottling from The Rum Cask. Rolls on the nose consisting of vanilla and spices. On the palate also, but here the woody taste comes in, as well as a light fruitiness made up of citrus fruits.

On the nose, it is extremely fruity and mild! Peach and apricot immediately come through! Later some vanilla! Overall very mild and pleasant! On the palate, initially peppery, with wood and slightly roasted! The alcohol is quite well integrated! The finish is medium-length and woody dry!

In a glass again for a long time. Not a great rum, but for the price it was definitely a cracking deal. And pure pot still. More than OK neat and certainly not too bad to mix for the price.

Another slightly older tasting. A great release where you get a lot for your money. Fruity with nice spices and roasted wood. The empty glass has some caramel and light medicinal notes.

Pretty easy going Mount Gay. Subtle flavours. A bit of cask, but more spirit driven. Vanilla. Apple. Somewhat dusty but also pretty fresh. Not bad. not fantastic either. Like to retry.

An atypical profile that differs from what Mount Gay offers. The nose, round, generous and fresh, speaks with notes of honey and spices: pepper, chili, vanilla, anise, nutmeg and cardamom set the tone of a rum with character and elegance. Also detectable are dried fruits (apricot), cherry, floral notes and a well-roasted woodiness. A profile that changes from Mount Gay, more subtle and complex than other more recent vintages. The profile starts with caramel, crème brûlée and honey at first, then develops fermented notes on butter as well as a kind of bitterness hard to describe. This surprising change is accompanied by a multitude of spices ranging from cinnamon to pepper, including nutmeg, star anise and chili. A roasted and almond touch accompanies the oak. The profile is soft, dry and a bit quirky in the end. The alcohol is rather well integrated. The finish is long, very spicy, bitter and dry on the flavors mentioned above. The fruits return with dried fruits, then tobacco and caramelized notes come back to bring some warmth at the end of the mouth. A good Mount Gay that wants to be different from what we are used to on this type of profile.

Now there's a Mount Gay 19 years. I find this rum very good. Unlike the others today, rather woody and spicy. But I like this one very much too. Also a little nutmeg is noticeable. Top rum.

Alcohol hardly noticeable. A hint of fruit and milk chocolate on the nose but lots of earth, especially mushrooms and musty, almost a bit meaty. Along with a lot of wood and tobacco. The taste continues this. I also think some tea joins in. Finish rather short and woody. A pity. Overall I like it quite well. You just have to like this flavor profile.

My RumRatings review from 4 years ago: The rum initially smells a bit alcoholic and needs time in the glass. It has a nice mix of tropical fruit, wood, vanilla, and roasted aromas. The rum feels fresh with a slight citrus note. On the palate, the rum is very spicy. The wood influence is immediately prominent, and there is a lot of pepper. But also distinct fruit notes. The spice is more dominant though. Roasted wood and a bit of anise accompany the finish, which is dry and has bitterness and spice. This Mount Gay is different again. The nose is great, the palate very spicy. Pepper is not my favorite among the aromas and here it is very pronounced. A good, exciting rum, but it could be a bit fruitier. The cask had a very strong influence here.

Nose: Despite the alcohol content, a subtle and restrained nose. Wood, vanilla, and plenty of spice including anise, somewhat reminiscent of cognac. Palate: Peppery start, then very spicy with anise and plenty of wood or bitter notes. Still a nice mildness due to the age. Finish: Woody, bitter Conclusion: Spicy and long-aged rum, weak on the nose but at a pleasant drinking strength.
