Velier Diamond SVW SVW 1999
Sipped neat is the only way most people meet this tropically-aged Diamond, and at 64.7% it demands attention. Expect glue and polish up front, then deep coconut, dark chocolate, dried fruit and creme brulee, with a long roasted-oak finish. Several tasters mention a light herbal-licorice turn near the end, and the alcohol runs a touch dominant.
The community says- Deep coconut
- Chocolate and glue
- Very long finish

Top rum, but it does not come close to the level of Velier's 1996 SVW. The aroma profile is almost identical, but is somewhat stronger in the spicy notes and at the same time has less expression in the vanilla notes that were so famous in the 1996 SVW. For me, therefore, just below the magic 9.0-point mark, but of course still an exquisite release.
Review by Serge
Not quite at the level of the Velier 1996 SVW full proof and not quite as fine in the creaminess and the gourmand and vanilla notes. But with very nice stickiness with coconut, raisin and chocolate as well as nice wood. Not at all dissimilar to the CBH or DMD from the ED rare collection. Of course too expensive nowadays, but very tasty. Nevertheless, I would rather take 3 bottles of CBH for the same money.

A step below the 96 svw but still a stamp in the Demerara that I really like! Intense and concentrated, the wood integrated in a great way! For me, Diamond remains the king, the most delicious in the Demerara despite a strong intensity!
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Incredibly cool and atypical Guyana diamond. Glue, dark chocolate, roasted nuts and a good load of cinnamon! Really cool😍♥️ really great vintage Demerara, alcohol is just a little dominant overall.
Review by Oliver
Has similarities to the Diamond 1996 SVW. But a bit rougher. Absolute top rum from Guyana.
Review by Pavel Spacek
The old Velier Demerara rums are the best you can taste in the rum world. The rums aged rather by accident for several years in the tropics, and no one topped up the cask contents. The angel's share was 90% and more, which is why the taste is especially full and intense. Although it is an extra expensive affair, I recommend tasting rum from this series at least once in your life.

Awesome !!! Really delicious chocolaty, woody spicy ... incredibly harmonious . Very very tasty !!!

But what a gem, a diamond in the rough! The nose is incredibly deep and rich, both dark and savory, with notes of milk chocolate, coffee, burnt sugar, buttery caramel, dried fruit (raisin, apricot) and coconut. Leather, tobacco, roasted wood, sweet spices (vanilla, pepper), salty notes and glue form a complex, intense and delicious blend. An olfactory marvel. The palate is a love letter to rum: a dark, delicate, complex delight of great aromatic intensity on gourmet cappuccino, chocolate, cocoa, caramel with crème brûlée and a hint of well-cooked molasses. The poetry continues with spicy notes, a pinch of salt, roasted wood, tobacco, a little glue and always dried fruit and coconut in the background. The alcohol is present as it should be, enhancing the profile, here of almost infinite sweetness. The finish is an eternal extension of this Rhumesque passion, as complex, dark and exquisite as ever. Caramel, coffee, chocolate and coconut provide the sweetness, while wood, roasted notes and spices bring a darker, more bitter facet. No false notes here. A superb rum, admittedly a victim of its own success, but one that belongs in Demerara's supreme league.

#5470 12.07.2025 Relaxing after a short trip to Flensburg to pick up packages and fuelling the car and spare canisters. Later I have a small tasting with friends 😊 Nose Wood/oak, light caramel, molasses, light iodine, light herbal, plum, faint smoke, light coffee. Palate Wood/oak, roasted, light iodine, light bitter, light coffee, clove, light vanilla, light orange, light herbal, light medicinal. Finish Medium to long, light bitter, wood/oak, roasted, cinnamon. Empty glass Prunes, light pencil shavings, cinnamon, light coffee, faint smoke.

Wow, yeah this is indeed a world-class rum. At first, you get loads of coconut on the nose and palate. Then typical Guyanese notes like dark chocolate and cocoa join in, plus a bit of wood.
Review by Jarek
Glue, coconut, dried fruit, roasted notes on the nose. Pleasant caramel sweetness on the palate, dark chocolate, coffee notes. The finish delivers what the nose and palate promise. However, the El Dorado Rare Cask bottlings play in the same league at a significantly lower price.
Review by Mirco
Very mature Diamond with a classic Guyana profile. On the nose dark fruits, wood, a bit of leather and tobacco, plus a nice spicy depth. On the palate dry and strong with oak, dark fruit, spices and a slightly bitter note. The long aging brings a lot of depth without overpowering the rum. Overall a complex, characterful Guyana that I really like.

Well, after all the highly praised reviews, I had to treat myself to it as well. I find it’s not as well balanced as some other Velier Diamonds. I find it pretty rough. For the money that’s being asked nowadays, I would definitely prefer the El Dorados at much cheaper prices.

Had I almost put after Barbados ... tasty Easy sipper, with delicious fruit, but also little complex. More maturity might have brought even more depth, and the profile is also not completely mine Overall a very good rum, but falls short of expectations. For me!
Review by Christoph H.
Tropically matured, Diamond goes in a slightly different direction than what I'm usually used to from Demerara. Here, glue and polish tend to dominate at the outset in a delightful interplay with marzipan, orange peel, dried fruit, clove, spice. Unfortunately, like the '98 CBH, this one swings into more herbal licorice notes, which after various exchanges seems to be something only I notice. You can define it however you like, at any rate, this unfortunately bothers me a bit. Overall, however, this is a very good rum here

very looong finish. Complex, on nose and palate with an amazing variety of flavors. Not as good as the -s- but still top of the notch. Demerara Rules
Review by Felix Reiber
This Velier Diamond is extremely chocolaty, spicy and seductive! The nose is very intense with cocoa, caramel, vanilla, leather, dried fruits, coconut and raisin. Burnt sugar, oak, tobacco and dried plum make the nose very complex. The palate is very strong and spicy with dark chocolate, wood, vanilla, cocoa, spices and cappuccino. The coconut with caramel, oak, crème brûlée and molasses give it a creamy texture. A slightly herbal note adds more variety. The brilliant finish lives on oak, dark chocolate, cinnamon, caramel, dried fruits, spices and cocoa. Coconut, espresso, roasted notes and orange peel make the complexity even more exciting. The alcohol-driven aroma is accompanied from nose to finish by a nice, creamy sweetness. I really enjoy drinking this Diamond again 😊 Many thanks to @Alex_Kunath for the great sample 😃

Great Velier Demerara. Intense nose with glue and fruit as well as a nice sweetness both on the nose and on the palate. Wonderfully long finish and quite well integrated alcohol. Nice piece, fun to drink.
Review by Benoit Mahe
A fine selection. In the greedy, a little dark. The fruit is there, but still rather subdued. In direct comparison with DDL's Enmore 1996, it's a hair below.
Review by Henry Davies
Great depth and a dramatic step up for me from it’s brother the . Great depth with wood, caramel, custard and strong deep coconut. Draws the drinker in and really complex. Layers and layers of complexity, some Skeldon type elements. Great depth and pose. Really a great diamond rum.
Review by Carlitooo
Slightly more elegant than the 1996, not as brute, subtly fruity, alcohol is optimally integrated
Review by Manuel
Very nice Diamond. A bit reserved on the nose but very intense in taste.
Review by Joachim Guger
Everything a Demerara needs - burnt sugar, spice, wood, and dried fruit. Beautiful glue and varnish notes. Massive power, those 64% really hit hard. Balanced, honey complex. I really like the candied orange peel. 🍊🍊🍊 Very oily and very spicy on the palate. Orange again. 🤩 The finish is a delight… Really awesome stuff. This is how rum should taste.
Review by Martin Švojgr
Absolutely great experience. Aromas of full and complex old wood, tobacco, vanilla and oak. The palate adds milk chocolate and velvety creme brulee on the finish is beautifully smooth and long with undertones of oak and tobacco. A beautiful throwback to history.
Review by Michal Jurka
On the nose I smell coconut, vanilla, dried plums, musty old leather and wood, dark chocolate and coffee bitterness, bit technical and alcoholic, light orange. On the palate I taste warm, dark and bitter notes of coffee and dark chocalate, roasted wood, spices, herbals and light coconut. I have a very limited knowledge of these old Velier bottlings so I can't really compare, but wow. This is very complex and layered rum scoring easily well over 9 for me. Big thank you to Filip Šikula for sharing this. Compared together: RX368 Diamond 1999 RX753 Enmore 1995 RX516 Uit 1997

Milieu de dégust. Fin de bouteille, nez végétal atypique Bouche Très rond, porté sur le cacao, torréfié. Semble discret après les marrons full proof
Review by Buddudharma
Excellent. Mouthfeel a bit less creamy than the 1996, maybe also slightly less balanced, but still an outstanding representative of its kind.
Review by Tim Reiber
With such a tropical aged Guyana, you can tell that time can do much more than just heal wounds. A deep, toasty and fruity nose that hits me with dark berries, leather, coconut, oak and caramel. On the palate, the alcohol pushes the flavors into the deepest taste buds. After a few seconds, an unexpected sweetness develops that almost reminds me of some sweeteners – and all that without sugar. Cane sugar, old wood, red fruits, vanilla, cinnamon and a colorful bouquet of flowers. In the finish, the sweetness lies throughout the entire mouth like a cozy body on a soft blanket. The mentioned aromas split into new spectrums of themselves and play like an orchestra. What techniques and conditions are needed to create something like this? Unbelievable.

Vintage 1999. I rate it 9.0 out of 10, it belongs to the absolute top among more than 1,300 rums I've ever scored.
Review by DaveLamb
for a diamond metal column still, very superior and impressive; but…for the price…, It's totally not worth buying. It's a role model and milestone, but give DDL him some time, it could present more “high qualitys”, something better, more popular and more cheap. just wait
Review by Bob the Drunker
Very straightforward rum, like other Demerara velier stuff, massive flavors but a bit lack of complexity I still fall in love with the nose when it just opened with massive hits from vanilla and bourbon like notes, another supurb rum for sure
