Demerara collectors chasing the old Velier single-cask legend are the real audience here — this is a Versailles-still rum with a divisive cedar streak. There's burnt caramel and vanilla up front, milk chocolate and nougat on the palate, and then the glass turns into a dry cigar box of cedar that some love and others find takes over. Well-liked, but several tasters wish it had more length and grip.

Most helpful positive review
Very nice caramel on the nose, soft caramel to be exact. A herbal and fermented side, cedar wood (cigar box). An enchanting nose. A powerful palate despite the 46.5% with caramel and alcohol, then the cigar box side (cedar) develops until it dominates everything. Everything falls back into place in the finish with milk chocolate, vanilla. Another extreme rum with an incredibly present cedar on the palate. But the finish and nose are superb.

Quite sweet and flat with a peculiar floral-nutty note that possibly indicates an oxidation influence in the sample. Either way, however, the base product remains a little too weak on the chest to impress.

15.11.2019 Having a great tasting event at this old hotel meeting new people. Notes Medium dark in colour. Nose Light roasted wood, dried fruit, light caramel, faint coffee, plum, light floral, Palate Oily, light wood, sweet, round, raisin, plum, faint coffee, light floral, faint iodine. Finish Medium long, wood, berries, light caramel, faint chocolate.

I was very curious about this bottling and have often heard that it is supposed to be one of the worst Velier Demerara bottlings. The smell immediately reminds me of Versailles and is more than acceptable. Taste-wise also Versailles and in my opinion very pleasant. However, it lacks complexity and length. But absolutely not a bad rum and better than so many others.

... Old Velier Demerara rums are the best you can taste in the rum world. Rums aged rather accidentally for several years in the tropics and nobody topped up the cask contents. The angel's share was 90% or more, which is why the taste is especially full and intense. Even though it's an extra expensive affair, I recommend trying a rum from this series at least once in your life.

In the beginning the glas has a slightly floral nose that vanishes quickly. Then there is burned caramel, vanilla and roasted notes. On the palate you get the full side of chocolate nougat and spices. After a while come cedar joins. The end gets chocolate and wood. That wood in the end becomes like a very dry cigar box of cedar. The empty glas is full of that note.
