Wow, what a beautiful nose. Very, very smoky, honey, very light spice, little wood and fruits. Bitter, medicinal. Perfectly balanced, great strength. On the palate insanely complex spice, honey. Slightly medicinal and herbal. Epic finish. Spicy, caramel. A nice, bitter medicine (we already had that). 😀 Interesting and yet very accessible. The bottle was found by ander_s and me in a bar, the rest came along.

Today again two 86er Rockleys, the Bristol (thanks to Vienna!) with 46% and the Silver Seal with 58.8% - so not quite a fair comparison. I like the Bristol and it immediately shouts: Rockley! On the nose immediately a fat honey note. The SS is more complex (herbs, olive, brine), but a bit less on the typical markers. Viewed alone, the dilution in the Bristol is no problem, but in direct comparison the SS can simply score higher here, especially with its incredibly long finish.

11.05.2008 Sanya in China is what Mallorca and Ibiza is to the Europeans. A beautiful place with long sandy beaches and mostly 5 star hotels. Notes. Light in colour. Smoky wood with some banana and coconut. Oily naturally sweet palate with added caramel and spices. Finish is medium long and sweet with light smoke and spices.

Part 3/8 of our 1986 Rockley tasting: 12-year-old pure Rockley, very restrained on the nose, taste-wise pure honey and honeycomb with some pear, not so complex but what it can do, it does well and nails it! If I could still get it at the normal price, it would go into awesome Air Mails! 🤤🍯🐝❤️👌

A great old school Rockley from '86, quite young but with plenty of potential. Nose... light smoke, honey sweetness and a bit of musty wood. Taste... typical Rockley aromas come together in the mouth, a slight sweetness that simply accompanies the rum, the smoke shifts somewhat towards ash, damp ash... Finish... you either love it or hate it... The Rockley taste lingers medium-long, some honey remains on the palate, the smoke stands above the rest here. The alcohol is absolutely not disturbing and fits very well at 46%. But there is still room for improvement, back then one of my first experiences with this style.
