"Brimming with flavour" is how one taster put it, and that fits: grassy, floral cane with grilled pineapple, mango and banana, plus a medicinal streak of nail polish remover, olive and light diesel. Unaged, water-white and 48.8%. Fresh and vegetal on the palate, though a few felt the finish ran short and a touch watery. A polarizing, funky Haitian clairin.

My first Clairin! An exquisite surprise and i had the pleasure to share that specific bottle with the members of Hypnotic Brass Ensemble after their show at the New Morning back then in 2016. Beautiful Memories!

05.10.2026 Still a pretty decent bottling with a good price tag. ------ RETASTING ------ 02.03.2019 Enjoying some samples with a good friend. Colour Transparent in colour. Nose Fresh, sweet, olive, fruits, pineapple, light coconut, anise, faint tomato, faint leather. Palate Round, warm, faint salt, fruits, pineapple, light orange, faint coconut, anise, light herbal, oily. Finish Medium long, fresh, round, oily, fruity, olive, light herbal, anise, faint strawberry, light marzipan.

So far of the Clairins tasted by far the most disappointing. Poorer in aromas, a barely hinted funk and rubber, shorter and weaker in the mouth as well.

NOSE: Super fruity; sweet banana, grilled pineapple, mango, papaya, cherry, raspberry, a symphony of mainly tropical fruits. Light oily notes; kerosene and diesel, slight smoky mescal notes. Diving deeper; a trove of medicinal smells as well; camphor, gauze bandage. Wonderful (92-93p) TASTE: The arrival is slightly oily, it’s tropical, (just) a little peppery. Mid palate: oily kerosene and diesel notes compete with tropical fruitiness. Exit & aftertaste also a bit oily/waxy, equal parts mild sweetness and black pepper. Takes water well but perhaps best w/o. (91) OVERALL: Close to perfect: 92p.

Nose: lots of olive, some fruit (especially pineapple at first?). Plus Agricole notes (grassy, floral). A bit medicinal. I get the tequila association. Taste: very fruity (the fruits taste partly slightly fermented) then the Agricole notes (planty, grassy and sugar) come through stronger. At the end a bit of banana(?). Tastes good. Could be more intense. Don't need it again. Would like to try more from Haiti (also Vaval).

Nose is very fresh, slightly funky for a Clairin with notes of smoke and nail polish remover. Palate is fresh with deeper smoky/woody notes. Mouthfeel is astringent, drying the teeth. Finish is moderate, with slight smokiness and subtle sweetness, apple.

Very nice flavour here on this clairin. I like this more than the other Spirit of Haiti I tried a couple weeks back, Le Rocher. This one is brimming with flavour. Pours water white. Some old grass, a little nail polish remover. A hint of peach skin maybe, clay pots. I like the character on this one. 7.5
