Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: The nose is still relatively unspectacular, as far as one can speak of a tropically aged Caroni from the 1996 vintage - but on the palate, there are real fireworks. Sweetness, spice, borderline smokiness, wood, rubber and tar...I feel in good hands all round, precisely because this rum definitely has rough edges and the high alcohol content is not hidden and brings out the typical Caroni notes almost perfectly. Impressive level.

A monumental Caroni, which at 70.7% shows unadulterated power and remains impressively complex. The nose is dominated by rubber, tar and dark spice, accompanied by vanilla and strong wood. The palate offers intense rubber tones, tar and deep, dark fruit, complemented by smoky and earthy nuances. The finish is long, with tart, dirty notes and a hint of sweetness. A wild, raw Caroni that fully displays its heavy style and remains amazingly balanced despite its power, a real highlight of the '96 era.

Impressive round palate with coconut, vanilla, molasses, ... Some funkyness is brought by candies and slightly sour tropical fruits. Amazing one !

The alcohol level is so high that for me it overwhelms both the oily and sweet taste... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at its peak a rum that was added in a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too distinctive and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. The distillery ended production and closed in 2000. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. Interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is truly a unique rum.
