HSE Single Cask (MEB 2019) 2003

Most tasters land in the same happy place: an unusually nutty, roasty agricole where the 47.8% sits so well several didn't notice it's on the softer side. Expect roasted cocoa, coffee, vanilla and dried plum on the nose, then a drier, greener palate with almond, figs and a peppery tingle. A vocal few find it a touch watery and "timide" — quality there, but not much daring.

The community says
  • Roasted nut character
  • ABV well integrated

The nose of this rum is insane: it starts with roasted cocoa, coffee, lots of wood, always with a full load of vanilla and ends in dried fruits such as citrus and plum. Absolutely round and intense! Surprisingly mild in the mouth with a nice drinking strength, lots of tart notes and tart fruits. Not quite as round as on the nose. The finish is again very roasty with (hot) spices and sweet pear. The HSE XO already had this crazy coffee note, but this rum is on another level!

A very nice agricole. Perhaps not the most dominant, but for me the most surprising is the aroma of young bananas, which becomes particularly clear after some time in the air. Quite different from the banana we know from Jamaica and co. Otherwise, it is very complex, with dark aromas of wood, nuts and coffee, but also tropical fruits and plums. The 15 years suit this rum so well that I didn't notice the comparatively low alcohol content at first. Really delicious!

A nose that predisposes to a certain complexity that is found only timidly in mouth, however the years of aging are supported by an adequate alcohol percentage. Like almost all of Simon's liquids, they lose depth in the mouth and the alcoholic boost could slightly disturbing after some seconds. If it had 5% abv more it would be totally unbalanced, therefore the bottling at 48% abv is appreciable.

Nicely round and light. On the nose plums, ripe banana and vanilla. When I taste Agricole i usually pick up this earthy and licerice note, it is also present here, but together with a refreshing minerality. Not fully my cup of tea, but i can appreciate the obvious quality.

the nose is gigantic after passion fruit, vanilla and lots of barrel with roasted nuts. taste then towards young banana, pineapple, fig, pear and sesame. in addition relatively dry, acidic and lots of wood. overall very tasty and complex but not 100% my thing.

Good HSE, but lacks that little extra that would have made it soar. Very easy to drink, there's quality here but no boldness, something timid takes over and we find ourselves satisfied but not impressed.

Very warm, full Agricole with lots of almonds. Spicy and dried fruit. Very complex, alcohol super integrated. Good drinking strength. It tingles properly in the mouth and finish. Super Agricole! 😀😀😀😀

Avg Rating 8.0/10 over 330 Rums

Le Simon is Martinique's ghostwriter. It is the island's most technologically advanced distillery, yet it sells no rum under its own name, runs no public tours, and ages nothing on site. Instead it distils two of the most beloved names in Martinique agricole, HSE and, until recently, Clement, on stills moved here from their original homes. What you taste as HSE is, in fact, Le Simon.
