The famous tasting of the S.B.S. single cask set. Cask # 216. The nose has a mechanical workshop and metallic edge, followed by fruit. A powerful yet elegant nose. The palate gives the same sensation, powerful aromas and elegance. The finish is long and very Caroni, the best of the four. The best of the 4 with cask #53.

The comparison is between the 4 Caronis Single Cask 1997 from SBS. The best of the 4 Single Casks presented in this match. The nose stands out with its pretty fruitiness that comes with opulence on the empyreumatic notes. Varnish, tar, rubber, leather and smoky notes are wrapped in velvet, with a touch of sweetness on honey to give an intense and elegant whole. The palate makes the difference by offering a nice basket of tropical fruits that accompany the sweetness, already present on the nose, with salted caramel, cocoa, vanilla and mild chili. Hydrocarbons, leather and smoky notes are part of it. The result is there: a complete rum, more complex and refined in every way. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish is beautiful, long and tasty. Warmth is present among spices, roasted notes, hydrocarbons and hot caramel. However, hazelnut and tropical fruits steal the show with a little twist on the finish that pleases the palate. As mentioned above, this is the best of the 4 Caronis, shining by its aromas, finesse and versatility.

Finally, the last Caroni from the 4-piece S.B.S series for me. I also think it's great. On the nose and palate, the beautiful Caroni notes of rubber, tar and leather. Also nicely spicy and a little woody. Alcohol super integrated. Top.

Like all 4 in the set, delicious and relatively affordable by Caroni standards. Update: After a long time back in the glass and still delicious and worthwhile in the Caroni price-performance comparison. Dirty and sweet.

The rum is part of a set: Cask 53, Cask 190, Cask 193 and Cask 216. The alcohol is not so well integrated here either. I find it a little more boring than the #190. For what the set costs or used to cost, it's an absolutely top PLV. Some newer bottlings can think about their price. I'll go back for more here!

This Caroni cask 216 could almost be an Agricole. As well as dried fruit, caramel, earthy notes, dry leather and spice, there's also some smoke, but rubber and tar are only briefly present at the start, although I'm not entirely sure. In the mouth, woody, salty, dry spicy and bitter spicy. Overall, varied, but almost mediocre. I liked the other casks better.

Best nose out of the set. Best balance with some creamy chocolate notes as an add-on to the rather similar profiles of the other casks. On the palate very dirt forwards and rather adstringent. For the set: 53=193 > 216 > 190

Cask #216 starts on the nose with an intense, classic Caroni profile. At the very first sniff a great smoky note appears, which then quickly fades and settles on tar and rubber. On the palate it is surprisingly sweet and fruity. Tar, spices, rubber, wood and herbs come in and are skillfully accompanied by honey, vanilla and later also cocoa. The slightly roasted note remains and the 63.1% drinks accordingly edgy and spicy. The long, intense finish lives on spices, wood, leather, cask and earthy facets. Again honey and tropical fruits come in and fade out with herbs and roasted aromas. At the end of the tasting I have some chewing gum on the nose. Amazing!

This rum is part of a four cask selection set. Cask 53, cask 190, cask 193 and cask 216. This particular cask is very well balanced on the alcohol and you don't really need to add water. A nice semi dry and well balanced rum overall.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing rum at the height of its fame, which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000 the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is really a unique rum.

Compared to cask 53. Similarities: big woody cocoa, spicy, leather, smoky/roasted. But also differences: less fruity, a surprising touch of honey and grass, more tar. I like this one too and I would say I prefer this one. Let's see how it evolves.

Wow, now to round off the day with a delicious Caroni. This tastes very much of tar and rubber and a little leather. Very dry and intense, that's how I like it. Definitely a very cool end to the day today

Cask #216 of the S.B.S Caroni 1997 series with typical Caroni profile: rubber, tar and wood. The alcohol is clearly noticeable in taste and finish.

SBS – Caroni HTR 1997 – 63 % Heading to Trinidad and Tobago, the legendary Caroni distillery (RIP 💀). Aged 18 years, bottled at cask strength at 63% (Cask 190). 👃 Nose: Pure Caroni — dirty, tar, tires, glue, fruity cherry. 👅 Palate: still Caroni, devilishly charming and fruity on a base of rubber and burnt caramel. ➡️ My opinion: despite the pleasure, personal preference for the TBRC 1997.

Color: Chestnut Smell: Aromatic, sweet, and fruity with toffee at the beginning. Tropical fruits (mango), raisins, toffee, and honey. Taste: Full-bodied and strong. Very woody (old wood) with rubber and tar. Chestnuts, medicinal and dry. Spicy with ginger and pepper. Finish: Long Dry, old wood, medicinal. Slightly bitter and astringent with cough syrup in the aftertaste.

Nose: Alcohol clearly noticeable, but also mild, pleasant aromas of raisins, honey and chocolate. Subtle rubber. Palate: More present, long-lasting alcohol onset. Then rubber, tar, herbs and spicy aromas. Finish: Bitterness and rubber, but also a hint of cola. Conclusion: Alcoholic representative from Trinidad, moderately strong in the expression of dirty aromas. Full-bodied and partly round.
